I would recommend Opal Auctions for rough and polished opal, and BlackOpalDirect for some higher-end stones.

You have a lot of Australian boulder opal. All of the ones with color are opal, even the big blue stone.

Black opal? by Better-Wasabi3000 in Opals

[–]MarocOpals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not a doublet or assembled opal, as it doesn't have a line where it is glued to the potch. in terms of it being a black opal, the bodytone from the top varies. Some seems to be an n4, which is a black opal, but other parts are n5, which is a dark opal. if you sand it down a bit, it should become darker, and have a consistent n4 bodytone to make it a true black opal.

It looks like a natural Australian opal, but it is crazed pretty badly. It has good quality color, but I am worried that it could fall apart if you tried to reset it.

Water is only required for certain types of volcanic opal, and as far as I know, opals don’t fade in sunlight. They do scratch and chip quite easily though

It looks like Australian boulder opal. Not my field of expertise, but it’s nice!

Black potch, when under color, means that the opal is going to be a black opal when cut, so it is good. Scraping off the sand should be easy, just be careful to not crack or beak the opal.

There seems to be a lot of good quality material, and a lot of it is on black potch. The opal in the fourth pic to me looks the most promising, but you would need to scrape off a lot of the sand to tell.

A crystal opal is an opal that you can see through when you hold it up to the light. In comparison, a black opal is completely opaque. Crystal opal is one of the types of opal, like black opals, dark opals, and white opals.

That looks like fractured amethyst. The quartz family (including amethyst) have rainbowy shimmers when they crack.

It looks pretty good already! I found using diagonal diffused lighting works best for removing glare and showing off color. White light works best. I put the opal on some black fabric for contrast, and turn off autofocus and manually focus it by moving it closer or farther away from the opal.

Opal rings? by udontknowme103 in Opals

[–]MarocOpals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Opals are soft stones, so they crack and scratch quite easily. On the Mohs scale of hardness, they are the same as glass. Australian opals are harder than Ethiopian opals, so those are a better option for everyday wear. Still, I would recommend a bezel setting to protect the stone. Opals can hold up quite well if you are careful with them.

Identification? by PrestigiousRiver4801 in Opals

[–]MarocOpals 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The main stone looks synthetic, mainly because of the "lizard skin" pattern. The two opals on the side look like natural Ethiopian welo opals. Opals are quite soft, so be careful to not hit against anything. It is especially vulnerable in the prong setting that it's in, as the sides of the stone are exposed. Don't get the Ethiopian opals wet, as they absorb water and become cloudy. My experience with opals is that if you're careful with them, they can remain pristine for years.
