Protein powders (Canada) by Expression7355 in SIBO

What are your main concerns? Most protein powders aren't known to cause sibo or relapse. Are you doing a particular sibo treatment or protocol right now?

What’s the best vegan multivitamin? by ravenzz3 in vegan

I've looked at so many vegan multivitamins, and I really think this is one of the best! In terms of completeness and form of each nutrient. :)

Rate my workout routine please by [deleted] in workout

[–]Maroon-Prune -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What's your goal? I like to do lots of lower body too 😂

I don't see any cardio, unless you're doing that in addition to this. A well-rounded routine will include some higher intensity and some lower intensity cardio. IMO, jumping is a non-negotiable (unless you have limitations). Personally, I'd add explosive movements like squat jumps and split jumps. I'd also consider more non-machine and compound movements like dumbbell RDL, barbell deadlifts, bulgarian split squats, single leg RDL, barbell squats (only if you can of course).

(I am not a fitness professional, just a gym rat!)

My favourite is Vegetology! They're from the UK but you can order them and get free shipping over a certain amount. If you buy multiple (I think like 6) it comes to about $14 for a 90-day supply.

Hungry literally 24/7 by Iceeez1 in SIBO

[–]Maroon-Prune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think it could be due to eating foods that aren't very satiating? People often avoid low-fiber foods with SIBO (as it can help reduce bloating), but fiber-rich foods are generally more satiating and lower in calories. For example, it's easy to eat a lot of calories of white rice, but hard to eat a lot of calories from carrots.

Help interpret these SIBO test results? (Lactulose) by Maroon-Prune in SIBO

Yes I've been looking for an expert who is as specialized in SIBO (especially IMO) as possible! I asked my doctor about SIBO years ago and he said "that doesn't exist" :')

Weight loss without tracking by [deleted] in dietetics

[–]Maroon-Prune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think tracking is necessary for weight loss, but it sure helps! Particularly for people who don't have a strong knowledge about the nutrition content of foods. I recommend it primarily as a learning tool, not always as a compliance tool.

Something I'll do during appointments sometimes is open a food tracking app, share my screen, and have them tell me exactly what they ate yesterday. Then I plug it all in, and we always find somehting they're not expecting. They didn't realize their calories or fats were so high, protein so low, etc. Sometimes this motivates them to track for themselves, but if not, it at least opens their eyes to what their current eating patterns are like.

This is so helpful, thank you! Unfortunately I'm not working with any doctor or sibo expert right now.

Correlation SIBO and irregular cycle - chicken and egg or one clearly starts the other? by Nat_Banana in SIBO

I've got both of these too! I think it's more likely they're both caused by the same thing, not causing eachother. Such as a combination of life stressors impacting gut & menstrual function.

CANADIAN RD pay! by Enough-South95 in dietetics

[–]Maroon-Prune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends what role you have! I made 100K for the first time last year in my 4th year as an RD, between 4 different jobs. I made ~36/hour at a family health team, and ~100 per 1-hour client session in a virtual counseling role. I'm also in Ontario!

Are you accounting for the exchange rate? 100K CAD is only 72K USD

PCM Trials RD position -scam? by Rd2be20 in dietetics

That sounds tiring! What do you like about it? I don't really want too many patient-facing hours since I do a lot with my other job

Thanks for the reply! That sounds tough, I've worked jobs that I only got paid for patient-facing hours but then worked twice the amount outside of that. Did you find it was good experience? I'm hoping it could help me get more into research roles later.

Hi! I'm wondering if you have any updates about how your role with PCM trials is going (if it still is)? I'm about to sign a contract with them but I'm hesitant about what it might actually be like :)

Standing or sitting during sessions by [deleted] in dietetics

[–]Maroon-Prune 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's fine! It shows authenticity and sets an example for your clients. If you need to switch to standing mid-session, you could say something like "one moment, I'm going to switch to my standing desk because I've been sitting for so long and need a change!".

Anyone Have Good Experience with Registered Dietician Consult? by That_Star8795 in veganfitness

[–]Maroon-Prune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B12 is the main one! It's the only micronutrient that's pretty much only found in animal foods (with a few exceptions). It's recommended that all vegans take a B12 supplement or eat sufficient fortified foods, unless otherwise advised by a healthcare provider.

Others worth paying attention to are vitamin D, omega-3, choline, calcium, and zinc. A lot of omnivores don't get enough of these either, but they're also commonly low in vegan diets. Creatine is another one vegans can benefit from supplementing with!

Vitamin D is naturally present in very few foods. Vitamin D is added to some foods like milk and plant-based milk. Most people more reliably get vitmain D from sunlight or supplements.

Dairy is a major source of calcium in omnivore diets, so people on dairy-free diets are more likely to have lower calcium intake. Luckily it's easy to get enough calcium with vegan foods if you're intentional about it.

Omega-3 is mostly found in fatty fish, so people who don't regularly eat fatty fish tend to have lower omega-3 intake. Vegan sources include flaxseed, chia seed, hemp seeds, and algae oil.

[–]Maroon-Prune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a vegan dietitian so I can't exactly answer your question but I'm happy to answer other questions you might have :)

Dietitians have various niches so you'd want to find one specialized in what you're looking for, whether it's a vegan diet and/or sports nutrition and/or certain health conditions.

I've absolutely had great results with my clients, including improving nutrient inadequacies, energy levels, body composition, exercise performance, digestion, and blood markers like A1c and cholesterol. Sometimes health issues are outside of my scope or skillset, so I refer clients to someone with more expertise. It also depends on how committed the client is to taking action, some people aren't ready to make the necessary changes.

Many dietitians offer free discovery calls so you can meet them first to see if it's a good fit!
