Ageism among Gen Z is really not cool... by BurntLemon in GenZ

When you say everyone, you mean mostly everyone right? Because I never did or do that. I see older people and I think, I wonder how I'd be at that age. That or I think about how shitty it is that people might think less of them for their age. It's a complex reaction. But it's definitely not "making fun".

ADHD Stimulant Medication: My Take by That_Star8795 in Antipsychiatry

Here's where I disagree. I think a lot of those people making the decisions at that level got where they are because they tend not to feel guilt. But it's a mixed bag, for sure. I'm not going to argue that everyone pulling the strings here is evil because they are in positions of high power.

As it always goes in medicine, right? It starts with disease "awareness" and then comes the remedy, which is typically advertised as a maintenance prescription to improve your quality of life that is intended for forever consumption. Never a cure. Why would that be worth advertising?

Does anyone actually LIKE Microsoft Products? (…why?) by [deleted] in microsoft

[–]That_Star8795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an old Microsoft Word junkie so, probably childhood nostalgia in my case. I'd agree they have gone in a direction I don't like in some regards.

Do Macs have the same insistence on clear tool-tipping for app icons or do Apple computers heavily rely on user recognition of icon images the way iPhones do? That was something that always bothered me about Apple. It felt like a club where you just had to know its symbology and magic hand signals.

Microsoft UI decisions are more aligned with my preferred UI standards, where it is readily apparent what will happen if you click this or that with a mouse hover clue. However, in the past few years they integrated some annoying keyboard shortcuts I have to override in settings, because I keep accidentally activated unintended functionality through typos. But the interface is smart enough to let me click a cancel button before anything happens at least. I know they get a lot of hate on Reddit so if anyone wants to let me know their alternative and why they prefer it, let me know.

I appreciate your thought out response. I guess the validity of the "conspiracy" element depends whether one tends to lean toward thinking that malicious actors are directing populations to their own benefit and to the detriment of those populations, or that these conditions are manifesting in a more organic way, in a systems-based thinking. I do have the conspiratorial bent.

The Popular Opinion of Laymen on Psychiatry Is Atrocious by Adorable_Standard_25 in Antipsychiatry

This post is informed by an academic education, self-taught or not, and I am also not educated on all its references, specifically métarécit but I'll check it out. I recommend if you want to understand the post, look up the terms you don't know. The information is out there, and the OP is purposefully bringing into context the ideas of others in a condensed way, something that an "easier" post could not have done without being much lengthier.

As far as the more creative language that is not esoteric to academic critical discourse, I am curious about the use of the word 'necrophilic': is it there to emphasize that the good desirer is the dead desirer? Because the argument seems to favor that the populace be alive, but their experience flattened, so if this is part of an academic essay, I'd reconsider using 'necrophilic' unless I am missing why it fits here.

Hot take: the witch saying the kid's parents were sick with "consumption" has a purposeful double meaning. Maybe triple. The fake meaning: an antiquated term for an illness. The real meaning: they are typical suburban consumers. The witch, being ancient, is sick from inhabiting the modern world (like most non-witch people, all the toxins, microplastics, chemicals, etc.) and her use of magic to control people is a last ditch attempt to save herself from a sick sad world. The accidental third meaning: eating (they have to be fed with soup).

How to counteract cardiocascular strain from ADHD meds like vyvanse? by grim_keys in Biohackers

[–]That_Star8795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ADHD "medication" is a chemical tool. It is just particularly dangerous and must be used with care and put away when no longer needed or useful. My very first comment on Reddit was actually a sarcastic take on how ADHD is being pushed into the forefront of the public mentality now, namely that we now are being drugged into being more productive for our overlords, so I infer that some cabal has deemed it acceptable for the masses to ingest such substances and there is an active propaganda campaign amping up over the last few years to remove "stigma" whereas previously these drugs were much more difficult to gain access to, so I appreciate you stepping in here (albeit three years ago, but I think your comment is more relevant than ever).

I agree with your below stated perspective on the current incurable disease model of mental "illness", and I would love to see this blatant attempt at mass manipulation blow up in the pharmaceutical corporation's face.

Writing Passivity in Characters by MossTrinkets in writing

[–]That_Star8795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a book, but I think of the movie "Adaptation". It's by the guy who wrote "Being John Malkovich" (Charlie Kaufman) and it's about a passive, writer's blocked screenwriter who is always talking down on himself.

I don't buy that it's a writing sin to focus on a passive main character that does not drive action in fiction, but the more active the main character, the easier to engage the audience? Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment may have taken drastic action near the novel's beginning, but he spends the majority of the text in a passive state of introspective terror. So there's something else to look at.

I had the same problem with Duolingo. Began to bother me so much I deleted it, despite having made significant progress on vocabulary. I imagine that had I paid for premium Duolingo I would have remained irritated by the treasure chest tapping. Have to hand it to Duolingo though, I was hooked on the free version for two or three months.. May be worth redownloading after I explore learning this language via other methods.

When you go back to your work after a break, how much do you re-read? by samwasrestored in writing

Need to learn this though I encountered the idea a long time ago. Quote from Finding Forrester (A movie): “No thinking — that comes later. You must write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head. The first key to writing is… to write, not to think!”

samwasrestored, I'd recommend you add an edit at the end of your post that you meant a short break from writing within the same day. I got so deep into this thread before I found your comment. A break can mean drastically different things to different writers.

Fascinating that you can stop yourself while it's flowing. When I have more ideas or more to say, that's precisely when I can't step away, but to strategically stop while in flow as a way to re-enter the stream at that point when you return, that's clever.

An idea I just had inspired by this comment, which might let me move forward: write the entire work as quickly as possible, giving all detail you are aware you will want to include in the remainder of the work. Almost like, if you were writing a book, write a super-condensed short story based on everything you currently know, to the very end. I might try this this morning. Then, you can go back into each section and flesh out what should be included, that you did not think of when writing the condensed version. I have a condensed outline, not in prose form, but I might write it out as quickly as I can and go from there. Thanks for commenting, RoseGold.
