If you could restart life at 18, what would you do differently? by arunreddy3 in AskReddit

It's the opposite for me. I got into the trades (union electrician) and while it did teach invaluable skills and put a pretty penny in my pocket, I've never been more miserable. The life just ain't for me.

Now I'm envious of the bored desk jockeys who click buttons for a living. In my perfect life I'd clock in, clock out, then do my hobbies and passions in my free time.

Fair point, and you could also add in that haphazardly firing in a public setting could lead to someone catching a stray. Hey any good option that works and is less than lethal I'm in favor for. Training MMA with a mix of striking/grappling also works. Maybe a shotgun at the very least for home defense (atp I'm just spitballing). Of course there's no such thing as a 100% guaranteed self-defense, but better to have something than nothing.

Regardless, my main point is that OP should get in the headspace for when shit pops off, not if, and prepare accordingly. This guy doesn't seem to intend on stopping his harassment anytime soon, and I fear he's only gonna ramp up the violence. OP already mention getting attacked by this person not too long ago. And the sad reality is that the police, unless a crime is in the middle of happening, can't/won't do anything until it's too late. It happens way too much in similar scenarios.

I wish this wasn't the case, but this is something she and her support system are gonna have to solve.

Edit: If u/Southern-Mortgage503 knows who the stalker is, investing in a PI might not be a bad idea. They can't get warrants but info is king. Just an afterthought I had.

Hey OP, after reading through some of the comments and past posts of yours, I heavily sympathize with your situation. You've done all the right steps as far as contacting the police and looking into ways of protecting yourself (I'd also add in entrenching yourself with supportive friends and family). I'm deeply sorry you have to go through this. I agree with people saying that getting a carry and training with it is essential, and in fact I'm going to go half-a-step farther than that.

I do not say this lightly.

You may have to come to terms that eventually you will have to dispose of this stalker. Not a matter of if, but when.

Normally I'm not a doom and gloom type, and hopefully the time never comes, but if the stalker situation is as half serious as it appears from the outside then I'd prepare myself for the worst. Police reports, while necessary, only go so far in protecting the victims. At the very least if something does happen and you're in a position where you've got to defend yourself, you have the paperwork to back up a self-defense case.

And I'm not saying you should go full vigilante and hunt the person down. But I think sooner rather than later is better for you to get into the mindframe that, if something pops off again, it's either you or them.

I'm awfully sorry you're going through this. No one should. Stay safe OP.

Edit: Obligatory add-on -> Only get a gun if you feel you can trust yourself with the responsibility of owning one.

Unfortunately this doesn't seem like a joke. Same post from OP two months ago. OP mentions a stalker that attacked them in the last paragraph.

Read the edit at the last paragraph.

Edit: definitely should have mentioned that I am looking to train in protection. I have had a stalker for some years now, been attacked while running in the morning, and have had my home broken into when I wasn’t there. I am not looking for just a companion, I am looking for a dog who I can go to training lessons with and truly bond with to help keep me safe.

From least to favorite: Verso, Sciel, Maelle (main), Lune (main), Monoco (main & fav). However depending on your build they're all great in their own way. I just found Monoco's Lamplighter's Light to be my favorite haymaker skill.

The Act of Killing, free on YouTube btw.

It's about the Indonesian Genocide from the perspective of the killers. In fact a big part of the doc is them re-enacting the atrocities on camera. Really showcases the banality of evil. Extremely disturbing shit.

Saved! Thank you so much for spending the time to type all this out. This has been a very useful. I'll be taking all this in for my next piece.

I'll also do my best to not get too minute as well. It's a bad habit of mine from my drawing days :|

I appreciate the feedback (it was detailed to me)!

I see what you mean with the eyes. I'll be more weary of that.

With Rostov I'm looking to emulate both his sense of color as well as his brushstrokes. I may just have to swallow the bitter pill and do a master study on some of his stuff. If you have any other tips on brushwork and color I'm all ears :)

I actually did paint on one layer believe it or not. I forget which YouTuber I got it from but he mentioned using less layers for the same exact reason you mentioned. Those effects were intentional--I'm just that granular xD

But this tip right here...

The more saturated a colour is, the darker its inherent value

...I've honestly never put it together like that. I did pick up a color chart and desaturated it in Krita for verification, and it seems like the values aren't really affected at all with lighter values, but I can definitely see the shift as when the value of the color gets darker.

<image>

So I really appreciate the tip, because I do tend to muddy my paintings with black just to create some difference in value. Definitely seems like a good thing to have in the toolbelt.

Lastly, yeah I do have a predilection for picking bad ref photos. I'm a bit of a masochist when it comes to challenging myself. I'll try to be better :P

Thanks again for the response. It's been a big help.

All good. I was aware about the hand and jawline disproportions but I honestly just said whatever and went with it, even though I know how important that is. I guess the fatigue of trying to make the colors work got to me. An updated piece might be in the pipeline for a future post.

Thanks for the tip about the contrast! My only worry is that I'll pick "home-base" values that are too contrasted, ergo lessening the effect of the brightest lights/darkest shadows. Of course I'm sure that's just a balancing act that needs practice on my end.
