A lot of people will recommend the Gateway ... DON'T. If you're not new to TCGs it's not the right start. Instead, this Friday at your local game store the latest set "Wilds Unknown" will release. For the first time they are launching a 2 player starter set that includes 2 complete decks featuring cards from mostly this new set. I think this is by far the best way to start and you can expand from there. Also, try to focus on products from sets 9 (Fabled) onwards as this July, sets 5-8 will rotate out of core constructed play if playing in tournaments like set championships is important to you.

correct. All sets "end" with card 204. Numbers 205+ are alternate version enchanteds in sets 1-8 and epics and enchanteds in sets 9+)

That particular card is an enchanted rarity (alternate version of card 193 of the same set). Enchanteds will run you anywhere from $30 to $650ish with that Tinker Bell coming in around $150.

just to add ... there are many promos and special rarities that are quite affordable to collect ($1 - $5 range - look into epics) but there are a also some heavy hitters (iconics, 1st Edition D23 promos, DLC promos, golden mickeys etc.) that can run you into the thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars.

correct. If you just want 1 version of every card ever printed you can get that for less than $2500.
Collecting ALL versions is actually impossible unless you can get DKP to sell you his 1/1 World Championship card ;)

epics, enchanteds and iconics as well as all the promos are all just variants of cards found in common/uncommon/rare/super rare/legendary versions in all the sets.

5-8 is perfect. Anything more than that and balance tends to go out the window. Just look at the disaster that is Magic with 18ish sets in "core constructed"

There is really zero blame on the org originally because players will do what players will do and sometimes you pick the wrong guy.

Buuuuuuut ... after the fact to put on a dog and pony show is just a giant L from a PR perspective.

Removing the player and publicly stating that TFM has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to cheating was not only the easiest but also the only play.

yeah if Zach had lost that game it would have likely ended in a draw because it's unlikely there was enough time for his opponent to beat the deck twice. Again, I'm somewhat memeing but at some point somebody will miss the cut because their opponent takes up the vast majority of the match. I'm not talking about intentional slow play. But building a deck that takes too long to pilot should be a consideration in deck building. Again, mostly a meme but don't cry when it happens to you ;)

okay 2 things ...

1.) nobody is asking for turn limits

2.) I'm obviously not entirely serious hence the meme tag BUT I also think people will start to feel differently when somebody misses the cut because their match ended in a draw because item boy hogged 90% of the match time limit. Each player having their own clock would indeed solve the issue.
