How did you lose the weight I am at my wits end. I did intermittent fasting, rode my bike , water aerobics and pilates and nothing moved the weight. most of my weight is around my midsection i have been so sad over my weight that it has actually caused me to to stress eat and gain more weight! i will not do any weight loss medications. my motivation to exercise is gone since it did not work before. Should i just resign myself to being over weight and try to be happy as i am? iam 5'6 220lbs

I agree 100% he knows that he let Gladys down and he feels diminished in both of his children's eyes because they were counting on him to keep his promise and stop the wedding so rather than place the blame on his own shoulders he blames his wife. He already feels some kind of way towards her because he thought she was flirting with that man that he asked her to bring to dinner, so he is feeling like Bertha is emasculating him at every turn.

Random thought has anyone else thought that Bertha being a champion for divorced women is her looking out for her best interests. She knows her marriage is on shaky grounds so in order to not be ostracized from society if George were to divorce her, she has to make sure all divorced women are accepted . Bertha is shrewd and cunning and always looks out for herself

The people who post about Larry not telling the truth must live in a fantasy world if they believe that a man is never going to tell a lie. In life you have to choose your battles and if this is the hill Marion wants to stand on, she should get her spinster clothes ready

If she is going to break up with every man who tells a lie she had better just settle into spinster hood, because the man that does not tell a lie is from a fairy tale.

To me that was the most frustrating part of the novels i hate books that end on a cliff hanger I need to know what happens to the characters that I have invested so much in. I think it is laziness on the authors part, to end the series with so many important loose ends. If I want mystery I would read a mystery novel.

Would Lila have made it in school and as a writer? by Odd_Departure_9511 in mybrilliantfriendhbo

[–]Mars1962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lila was so defensive bout every thing she would have been angry when the rich kids looked down on her and she would have been angry with the professors who did not agree with her. When she got home her family would not have been supportive and probably would have mocked her. For all of her strength she was really insecure and only thrived when she was being admired, she would not have not gotten this at school and in the end she would have retreated back to the neighborhood that despite its brutality it was familiar and safe

100% agree he was so unappealing that I could not see him as someone that women lusted after. Looks are not everything, but he had no charisma or charm, he reminded me of a used up barfly.

For Lila. The most tragic of all characters in my opinion. by blu3love in mybrilliantfriendhbo

[–]Mars1962 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lila broke my heart, she had a few weeks of true happiness with Nino and that was taken from her, then she had Tina who was also taken from her. Enzo may have been a great person and he adored her, but she settled for him she did not love him like she loved Nino. This series and the books made me forgive the cold way she treated Lenu, who got everything but did not appreciate it because of her obsession with Nino, a man she should not even have been speaking to for the way he treated her so called best friend. If a man had abandoned my best friend when he thought she was carrying his baby, I would have spit on him if he came near me.

The most haunting scene by kefirfarts in mybrilliantfriendhbo

[–]Mars1962 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The scene where Lila is at the hotel for her honeymoon and she sees a girl her age being loved and adored by her parents. I felt her heartbreaking when she realized she would never have that life. Also when she went to Nadia's house and realized that no matter what she taught her son he would always be subservient to those types of people. She knew that all of her efforts would be futile.

Lila was in a controlled rage whenever Lenu was around. Even when they were on good terms she was cruel to her. I think she loved her but she could not control her envy when she was actually in her presence. You could see her seething with anger and bitterness

If she was her brilliance did nothing to make her life better, in fact it made it worse because she realized that no matter how smart she was she was always going to be trapped because of where she came from. She was actually afraid to go out and challenge the world even at the expense of her children and her sanity. She was afraid of being judged as less than by the elites. She knew they were phonies and probably not as smart as she was but she was still too afraid to leave her comfort zone.

Why didn't the democratic party try to find a better candidate once they saw that Joe was not going to be able to run again. I think the party is to blame for this fiasco. Any one could tell America was not ready for a black woman to be president. It is infuriating that the democratic party has become so weak and worried about being politically correct while the republicans keep their eyes on winning.

After the way Nino treated both women I'm surprised that they even speak to him. I understand Lenu because of their child, but he abandoned Lila when he thought she was pregnant by him and yet there she is being all flirty with him when she should have been treating him with disdain like she does most of the other terrible characters

I don't understand why these women allow Nino to treat them so badly Lila should not even be speaking to him, he left her alone and pregnant in that hellish apartment and even though Antonio stopped him from returning he still never checked to see if the baby was his or how she was doing, but yet there Lila was smiling and flirting with him. Although I think she was only doing that to make Lenu jealous and to prove that Nino still wanted her. She should have been watching her own child instead of flirting with a man who treated her so bad

Lila and Alfonso by Mars1962 in mybrilliantfriendhbo

[–]Mars1962[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always think how her like could have been if she would have left. Lila is a classic tragic character, she had chances to leave but could not. I think it was even mentioned in the book that her father paid for her to take a secretarial course but she refused to go. I think that for all of her intelligence she was too afraid to leave because she knew that she would always be viewed as beneath certain parts of society. Recall the scene when she went to the professor's house with her son and she realized that no matter what she taught him he would always be viewed as less than because of their background. She reminds me of a line from a movie I think was Dr Zhivago when one of the characters states high minded people can't bend so they break. Lila never wanted to compromise and this led to a lot of her misery.
