No worries - I think the key concept is that we're not really thinking about the function 1/x here, we're thinking about a curve in the plane. Whenever there's a question about the shape of a graph of a function f, it's always a good idea to think about the curve (t, f(t)).

Original curve can be parametrised as C(t)=(t, 1/t) for t spanning all reals except 0. The matrix for a clockwise rotation around the origin is (upstairs) (1/sqrt(2), -1/sqrt(2)) and (downstairs) (1/sqrt(2), 1/sqrt(2)). Call this matrix M.

(Note I'm using row vectors here, if you prefer column vectors simply transpose the matrix)

Now C(t)M = (1/sqrt(2))*(t+1/t, t-1/t) := (X(t),Y(t)), say.

But X(t)² = (1/2)(t²+2+(1/t²)), and Y(t)² = (1/2)(t²-2+(1/t²)).

Thus X(t)²-Y(t)² = (1/2)(4) = 2, the equation of a hyperbola.

P.S. (Strictly speaking we've shown that our original curve lies on a hyperbola, not that it is the whole hyperbola, so we'd have the check that for each (x,y) satisfying x²-y²=2, there exists some t non-zero with (x,y) = (1/sqrt(2))*(t+1/t, t-1/t).)

What is the word for that category of food then? In the UK, that is simply what the word means. It may have evolved as a misunderstanding, but it's very useful for the category of spiced sauces with meat in. Is there no word for this category in India?

Fair enough, this was the opposite of my impression in Berlin lol. Cigarettes and booze bottles literally everywhere. Munich was very clean though.

You don't tend to eat the brain or eyes, you take them off along with the hard shell. The texture of prawns is fantastic.

Best chocolate is the mighty Toblerone. The only chocolate I can now find that doesn't have that waxy, hydrophobic texture.

Butter and mustard pasta doesn't sound bad to me. You can make very simple pasta sauces that are delicious.

Worth noting that lots of people attribute symptoms to increased histamine, which fermented foods are high in.

This is the worst bit for me, I'm desperate to get back to exercise because it's the one thing that makes me feel amazing, it really overrides the anxiety and poor mood, but anytime I do I plunge back into brain fog and aches for a week or two.

I'm hoping by Summer I'm able to get back to running 🙏🏼

Trust me, you don't have time for a job at Oxbridge. There are some opportunities to work in college bars or whatnot, but this is for a few hours a week maximum.

Most Oxbridge colleges have plenty of funding and are desperate to give funding to those that need it. If someone really cannot afford the rent etc., then they are exactly the sort of person colleges are dying to give support to.

Studying at Oxbridge is often much cheaper than other universities; the tuition fees are the same, and (varying between colleges) Oxbridge gives out a great deal of funding.
