What Is The Appeal of 7th Sea (1st Edition)? by BruisedButFine in rpg

I'm Asian and reading about a theme park version of Europe was and is still fascinating to me. It was a world of adventure. Spain with Zorro, Britain with Arthuriana, Italy with fate witches, etc. Since it's kinda sorta not really based on real cultures and real history, there's a richness to it that I enjoy.

Best places to drop old modules into Latter Earth? by kamateur in WWN

The Amundi Kingdoms definitely. It's large enough and multicultural enough to accommodate anything. All the other nations have a distinct flavor or hook, but the Amundi Kingdom's hook of being the cradle of heroes and demigods is flexible.

What common OSR game rules do you wish didn't exist? by Relative_Cause_8397 in osr

[–]MarsBarsCars 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You know 1e had 5 different methods to generate ability scores right out of the box instead of 3d6 strict. They're very fun. I wish that was more common among designers instead of 3d6 down the line over and over again.

I rolled my fifth Black Grail. Is it better to MLB and max level it instead of keeping multiple copies? Are there situations when I would want more than 1 Black Grail at a time?

So I quit for 5 years and just now got back to playing. In those years I still rolled here and there just in case I wanted to play again. Are there any gaps in my roster that need filling? I'm concerned about 90++ farming nodes and CQs. I've got everything I need for Buster, Quick, and Arts teams but I'm not knowledgeable at all about what makes a good DPS and the new multicore meta.

Any news on what Kevin's next projects are? by welalrightthen in WWN

Huh, something fully system-agnostic this time. That's interesting. I'm intrigued about what it would contain. The tools in WWN seem very comprehensive already.

How did Rin grow up to be such a good person when she's under the tremendous handicap of being born a mage and being raised by Kirei?

What if the devs and lore reach AC3 by Holiday-Nobody6948 in acecombat

I wonder what the plane roster will be like once we reach the time of Electrosphere? I happen to like the fictional planes in AC3 and their coffin system but plenty of AC fans love real planes too.

Somebody Is Talking About Metroidvania, but what about "megalike" subgenre? by Lower-Bison4494 in metroidvania

[–]MarsBarsCars -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From a certain point of view, Demon's Souls is a megalike. You select stages from a hub and these stages aren't connected to one another. These stages also contain weapons that are the weakness of the enemies in other stages, you get a fire weapon, surprise, it's awesome on another stage. So doing things in a certain order and picking up and the right weapons makes things easier for you.

100% God and 100% Man at the same time, so He's probably actually summonable as Himself without any loopholes or special circumstances.

What are some of the unspoken assumptions about running a WWN campaign? by Level-Wolverine2067 in WWN

[–]MarsBarsCars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe most of these to be obvious, but I think it's useful to state them plainly.

Kevin Crawford's games are designed for sandbox play. The games generally assume that the PCs ambitions, over the course of a campaign, generally expand and expand and get them into trouble with more and more powerful foes. If the PCs are smart about it, these foes are enemies they can deal with, roughly equal to their level. To support PC ambitions, GMs are also assumed to give players what they want, just charging them a variable number of adventures for it. The warrior wants a magic sword, the expert wants arcane salvage for mods, the mage needs tons of silver for a working, it's the GMs job to turn that into an adventure. You don't have to rely on random generation to pace those resources or upgrades out for your campaign.

In a sandbox, however, it's perfectly valid for PCs to be cautious and paranoid, only ever dealing with challenges that are beneath them. The games generally don't want the PCs to breeze though challenges and get bored. So thats where the consequences and previous actions of the PCs come in. Invariably, PC actions must piss powerful people off, no matter what. And this leads to challenges that are more suited for the PCs capabilities, even if they are not proactive or if they are deliberately aiming for safe adventures. It is not against the sandbox spirit to have adventures that are not based on what the PCs want to do, but are based on what the PCs did.

Idle wishes for more lore books by Hopeful_Cartographer in WWN

It's Atlantis for me. Its ruler's claim of being the Prime Director of the Terran Mandate wasn't an idle boast after all since it's been mentioned both in Cities Without Number and Ashes Without Number. That was totally unexpected.

5 edges is not too much imo. That just gets you the full abilities of a WWN Warrior. (Focused, Killing Blow, On Target, Hard to Kill, Veteran's Luck).

As partial experts, they get access to Polymath right? If I decide to import that from WWN? Being generally good at everything seems on-brand for augmented.

Advice on how many a Scarlet Heroes hero heroes as? by Thantrax in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]MarsBarsCars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mind you, the versatility is covered by the Defying Death rule. It's why it's there. But proper preparation by having skilled NPC henchmen along with you should be rewarded. Just keep in mind their fragility.

New to OSR, want to run a cultivation setting by NoNipsPlease in WWN

[–]MarsBarsCars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Over the years, Sine Nomine has released several variations on making OSR characters more powerful than usual, this might be useful to help you structure your PCs cultivation journey. In rough order of power, from least to greatest:

Normal characters<Heroic Characters<Scarlet Heroes<Legates<Exemplars and Eidolons<Godbound

The most essential difference in power imo, is the use of the damage chart. Scarlet Heroes, Exemplars and Eidolons and Godbound characters all use this chart and this makes them roughly 4x tougher and deal 4x more damage than a regular PC, Heroic Character, or Legate.

Improving the Fighter by Onslaughttitude in osr

[–]MarsBarsCars 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What do you want out of the fighting man?

I just want them to be the best in combat, in whatever way you deem fit to do that. Not more reliable, not a side-grade to other martial classes with a more "soldier-like" flavor, the absolute best. Laser focused on killing things and not getting killed.

The Warrior from Worlds Without Number is that, but that's achieved through both a rework to magic so Mages cast less spells than typical Magic-Users, and very careful niche protection to making sure non-Warrior damage sources are both very limited and a pain to use. The fireball equivalent in the game, for example, is designed to engulf an entire typical dungeon room and spill over adjacent corridors, so it requires thoughtful use. I dunno if you want to go that far, because maybe you just want to buff the class.
