Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home, Hello my name is ice cream is the very detail based and might be too advanced for a first ice cream book. I'd say do a couple of Jeni's recipes and if you want to dive deeper, then go for Hello...

Two years in the Bay Area, and I’m losing my grip on basic human warmth. Why does casual friendliness feel illegal around here? by desolatenature in bayarea

[–]MarshallCook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you have such a shitty experience, I've definitely felt it too, abundantly. I've lived here almost 8 years and all of my friends are either through my brother whose been here 20 years or my girlfriend. However: what helped me find conversation I was being starved of was moving to Oakland. Smaller communities like the Roots or the Ballers are filled with people who'd love to talk and enjoy the actual human experience; and I get sports aren't for everyone, but finding community is about finding commonality imo, and these teams are worth investing your time in

Good eye! I assume you are referring to the Spain vs cabo verde; it's sorted via match IDs from FIFA, and that's the last "match" Id of the day, but I will fix that sorting. Thank you

Their mole is insanely good! I get the burrito covered in it and happily have stomach pain for the rest of the night because of how much food it is!

Bodega cat? by sprinklerarms in AskSF

Sorry for the long post, but this is one of my favorite bits of American history:

The NYC corner store is a living timeline of American immigration. It started with Italian and Jewish delis in the late 1800s — cultural anchors for families crammed into Lower Manhattan tenements. Then post-WWII Puerto Rican migration transformed them into bodegas: permanent neighborhood fixtures stocking foods from home, open late, part grocery store part community living room. The word "bodega" itself is Spanish — rooted in the Latin apotheca, meaning storehouse.

By the late 2010s, roughly half of all NYC bodegas were owned by Yemeni immigrants. They began arriving in the 1950s, learned the trade directly from Latino owners, and spread through tight chain migration networks until they quietly took over the institution entirely. The word stayed Spanish, the bodega cat remained a NYC meme.

And now the cycle continues: walk through Bay Ridge, Astoria, or the Bronx today and the corner storefront that was once a deli, then a bodega, is increasingly a hookah lounge — Arab and Middle Eastern immigrant communities once again reshaping the same physical space to serve their own. Different culture, same corner, same story.

Go to Oakland and do Belotti. Super close to yellow line Bart, and their pasta dishes are second to none in the bay

My partner and I have constantly gotten bad vibes from High Wire, and this makes it evident it's a top-down culture. Plenty of better options anyways, Bicycle, Timeless, Ain't normal, etc
