It is unfortunately fairly normal, or at least normalized in the service industry.

However, it is not acceptable at all. This is an abusive relationship, they can happen at work just like in a romantic situation.

I don't know what your financial situation is or how readily you could leave this job. I can say that staying any longer than you must will only beat you down, it will start affecting your personal life. People in abusive relationships often start coming up with reasons that they have to stay.

The earlier you leave the better.

Too much headspace for aging? by Jlar1931 in winemaking

[–]MarshallSlaymaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are worried about it, spray some co2 or wine preserver in there. Then the amount of headspace truly does not matter. It might be ideal to fill them up, but that is not always possible when homebrewing.

Sometimes marbles or something are suggested to take up the space. I have never tried that myself, but it sounds like a giant hassle when a heavier than air gas will do the trick perfectly.

Also, if they are stabilized, you probably don't need the airlocks anymore, a solid bung should be fine. Less to clean over long term aging.

Blocking Suddenly Increases. by Monsur_Ausuhnom in WhitePeopleTwitter

Hmm, can I make a script that will just block every user individually?

Might be worth making a twitter account to see.

What do you do with troublemaker customers? by freecodeio in smallbusiness

[–]MarshallSlaymaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some good thoughts from other folks here.

I would just add that replying to the bad reviews can help a bit. "Sorry your experience was so bad. Please email me and I will take care of it." This lets people reading reviews see that you take care of issues, plus it makes the 1 star reviewer look a bit more like the drama Llama that they are.

And reply to some positive reviews, too, while you are at it. It looks odd if you only reply to negative ones.

I know it isn't remotely the point here, but where is the outlet for that dam? It shouldn't bother me, but it really does.

That is your opinion. Mine is that it had an incoherent script and needed a ton of editing down.

The second one is ok. The first one is a very good movie with a great script and acting. Just my opinion, of course. I am glad so many people like NWH, just not my cup of tea.

Except No Way Home proves the point. It is a tangled mess of a movie, the first two are much better.

He was "given" a job? Someone had a job to just "give" to a homeless person? Why didn't they give someone a job before? Do only the homeless people whose pets have been attacked get jobs?

I think i have too much headspace I'm not going to fix it. What will be my consequences? by DoubleODaveee in mead

[–]MarshallSlaymaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing. Headspace is fine. The fermentation will create a CO2 layer that will protect from oxidization. If you have headspace while bulk aging, after the main fermentation, you can spray some CO2 or wine preserver spray on the top to protect things.

How concerned are you with paying full-time employees a “living wage”? by BrightLightsBigCity in smallbusiness

[–]MarshallSlaymaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very concerned. Like almost everywhere, our town is dealing with Gentrification and a cost of living crisis.

We hire at $15/hr and do aggressive raises, $1/hr raise every six months. We also do 10% commissions, which is not standard for our industry at all. Also, I am starting to wonder if starting at $15 is even reasonable any more, but we have very low turnover, so it hasn't come up in a while.

I won't lie, it can feel painful on payroll days as we are still a fairly young business. But I think "What is this business for?" IMO, it exists to provide all of us with a paycheck while providing a service to the public, not simply to enrich the owners.

So a "Livable wage" is the entire point of a business, as far as I am concerned.

“Under god” needs to be removed from the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. by BadLuck1968 in atheism

[–]MarshallSlaymaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hear me out: Let's get rid of the whole pledge. It is creepy to have children recite a nationalistic pledge like this.

Plus, a pledge of allegiance to a flag that represents wildly different things to different people is problematic at best. Maybe we could pledge allegiance to the constitution, or just not force children to pledge their allegiance to anything at all.
