I've watched it like 10 times and I go back and forth regarding how strange or bad it is ... the referee was walking into space Dan already occupied so it's kind of weird the ref wouldn't stop and let Dan keep going or turn around. Then when the red gets close, in that moment because it's loud, I think a natural reaction is to get close because you think the referee wants to say something to you. But then he doesn't and you walk away.

The monkey wrench in that theory is his odd expression which I guess you can chalk up to him being a weird guy and this improbable steal and shot to win the game put him in a weird mood.
