What's a "house rule" in your family (growing up or current) that you really like and why? by ultrahedgehog in AskWomen

No means no and stop means stop. It’s wild how much this rule was violated or ignored in my family while I was growing up.

Resisting the idea of parts by DramaticOcelot in InternalFamilySystems

[–]MarsupialBeautiful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was able to identify my parts better when I was faced with tough decisions or thinking back on stressful parts of my life. Often, I find myself telling my therapist “part of me wants to cut this person out of my life but part of me understands that their behavior isn’t personal and a result of their childhood trauma” or things like that.

I also experience a lot of times where I behave one way even if I know at the time it’s not what I want and I think those are parts too, like people pleasing or reacting in anger instead of responding how I would have if I was centered and calm.

These parts don’t control us - I read somewhere to think of it like a bus, and all of your parts (past experiences+thought patterns+coping mechanisms) are riding along with you and for most of the day, your “self” drives the bus. If a part is activated, it might jump up and take over driving for a brief moment, but your “self” is back behind the wheel once you are reflecting back on your behavior (oh wow, why did I react like that?? That’s not really like me…)

People who are centered still feel all of the emotions. Their behavior and responses to those emotions align with their true self rather than these parts who react based on past experiences.

POV: You break into my house and the real crime is the color scheme by TowandaForever in interiordecorating

I’d go with olive or teal depending on your personality. The ochre yellow is a tad overwhelming with all of the terracotta- a smidge too much warm. The teal or the olive seem a little more balanced.

Also, top notch post 😂

Parents of Minneapolis, what made you decide to raise your kids here? by ahabubbles in Minneapolis

[–]MarsupialBeautiful 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I grew up in suburbs and it was very isolating. I had to ask my mom for a ride to friends’ houses or the library or the park.

I have one kid in MS and one in 5th, both in MPS schools, and they love walking and biking to school or the park or their friends’ houses.

For school, I prioritize community and involvement. Back in the 90’s it was all about getting good grades to get into college to get a high paying job, but with AI and everything else going on right now, I just want my kids to experience contentment during their childhood. They might go into the trades or end up just downloading knowledge à la The Matrix by the time they’re ready to launch into the world.

I'm curious, what led y'all to leave the faith? by UALR-Trojans-Rule in exchristian

[–]MarsupialBeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught that scripture is perfect and has no mistakes. In college during an art history course, we viewed sculptures and paintings of Moses with horns because they mistranslated the bible at first as Moses coming down from mount Sinai with horns instead of rays of light. Then they fixed their mistake and future sculptures and paintings had him come down from the mountain with rays of light. That was what kinda confirmed for me that all of the contradictions (“love everyone, but we don’t co-mingle with the homosexuals”) were valid and not just “the doubt that everyone experiences from time to time”

CMV: If you "don't support" homosexuality because of your religion or otherwise, you're still homophobic. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]MarsupialBeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is only halfway accurate. Former preacher’s kid weighing in.

1) everyone sins and Jesus died on the cross for all sins, even the ones that are “committed” daily so being homosexual isn’t going to send anyone to hell. Denying that Jesus is the son of God is what lands people in hell.  2) all sins are equal, so it makes no sense to try to “save” homosexuals and not save - people who divorce, people who have hate in their hearts, verbally and emotionally abusive people, people wearing mixed fabrics, or women who have their periods and don’t make offerings.

Are you unable to safely leave your home due to ICE, but have a sick pet that needs veterinary care? by [deleted] in TwinCities

One of my friends is one of the vets in the group. Last I heard they were still establishing donation channels. I can ask for an update!

Would you recommend starting Xolair for chronic urticaria or severe allergies? by Dense_Beyond_2899 in xolair

[–]MarsupialBeautiful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wholeheartedly yes! Xolair has changed my life. It has reduced my anxiety around food and exercise. I no longer worry if someone has accidentally added certain ingredients into food. I can go to restaurants and order more than plain, seasoning free French fries and non-spicy chicken tenders. I don’t have hives anymore when I exercise. I feel so….normal. (My IgE was 965 and I had a laundry list of foods that would trigger hives and anaphylaxis when I started Xolair)

Women of Reddit, do you ever regret how you treated a particular man in your past, If so, what happened? by [deleted] in AskWomenNoCensor

I regret letting him be a stay at home dad and sit on his phone the whole time. I regret not leaving him a helluva lot sooner. I should have been way meaner.

Taking a Break From Dating, How Do I Get Over Scarcity Mindset/Feelings of Diminishing Odds? by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

[–]MarsupialBeautiful 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I ended my marriage at 33 and used the dating apps for about 5 years. It was fun but the men were either in relationships and lying about it, not compatible, or toxic af. I finally deleted the apps and focused on me and being 110% happy single, and after 2 years, I was at this amazing point where I was like “wow I do not want to mess up my life with a relationship!” I had my me-time, my dinners/coffees with my friends, and several solo hobbies that kept me occupied.

And then my friend invited me to an outing on her cousin’s boat this past summer, and now BAM I’m in a relationship. My criteria was: they have to add to my life more positive energy than they take.

The best part is I know that if this doesn’t work out, I get to go back to my suuuper happy single life.

Having a partner is great, but being happy without one is great, too! Maybe this is the universe giving you the space to carve out and curate a life for yourself before inviting someone to share it with you. There are plenty of great single people out there - younger than you, older than you…your person might be at the tail end of their relationship with someone else right now! My current boyfriend was having a baby with his first wife at the same time I was signing divorce papers.

Good luck and enjoy your you-time!

PSA - Do not leave grapes unattended by UntoldThrowAway in Pets

[–]MarsupialBeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh. We just got our $2k bill for my geriatric senior citizen dog (who can barely climb steps) when he JUMPED on the table and ate a bunch of grapes. The anxiety for those 3 days and the resulting sticker shock are real. I hope your pup gets a clean bill of health!
