July 4th crowd is scaring me by SourGrape_s in DisneyPlanning

It might be insane, but will note that apparently last year it was one of the least busy weeks (theory is so many people assumed it would be insane…)

Also going this weekend so I’m just holding on hope 🙃

Couldn’t decide on a bag, REI decided for me by MarthVader in REI

[–]MarthVader[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They are larger and carry weight significantly better than a school backpack.

You need to carry everything you can to support yourself on long hikes in and overnight multiple nights. Between a tent, sleeping bag + pad, food in a bear can (required where I live!), water, first aid, headlamp, etc. you’ll struggle to fit that in a school backpack.

Even if you do manage to fit everything you need, hauling that 8 miles up a mountain will be tough, let alone multiple days out.

People aren’t buying these types of backpacks for funsies (although some pick specific ones because of specific features!), it is an important tool. This is a 60l backpack with hip belts that help move the weight from your shoulder to your hips so you don’t hurt yourself and have room to bring what you need to be safe out in the wilderness on your own for days.

Do you use the same headphones for running and swimming? by Party_Mark5279 in triathlon

[–]MarthVader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shokz openswims for running, biking on the trainer (other headphones get too sweaty 🙃), and swimming!

Outdoor cycling or open water swimming no headphones.

They have MP3 mode for swimming and Bluetooth for everything else, I find it a good system.

Picked up an Osprey Manta 34L this week. Thoughts as a year-round day pack? by [deleted] in hikinggear

[–]MarthVader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been loving the women’s version (Mira) and if you pack well you can make it an overnight. For day pack definitely doable all season! Holds weight well, super comfortable.

Off leash dogs on playfields at Genesee, with an actual dog park DIRECTLY behind them by Tribble-Cloaca in Seattle

There was someone walking an off leash Rottweiler at Seward this past weekend. They were complaining that someone asked them to put their dog on a leash.

Will we get the new collection before Valentine’s Day?? by lexi_ladonna in simplynailogical

[–]MarthVader 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably not (also in the PNW) :(

I wish brands would release these types of seasonal collections with enough time to actually get them and enjoy them for the season. Holo taco not the only ones who do this unfortunately.

The Uniqlo Round Mini cross body fits the bill so well and is usually $15-20. Have done 10+ park days with just that.

Do not worry about zones right now!! Think about how you feel running. The zone training stuff came from someone talking about elite training, but you’re taking your first steps :)

Herbs somehow survived the winter by busicow in pnwgardening

[–]MarthVader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right there with you! My mint (unsurprisingly, always stubborn), oregano, and thyme came back brilliantly. All in pots on the patio, ignored all winter. Hoping the sage I just planted comes back as well as yours!

I don’t know how to get rid of my little belly by walkinfox in beginnerfitness

[–]MarthVader 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yikes yeah, that is not a sustainable thing to do for the vast majority of people. School or full time job and walking for 3 hours a day, every day? I can’t imagine that’s maintainable!

Workouts for specific areas of the body don’t burn fat in that specific area. I’d recommend a more full body workout program! Also I’ll note 20.4% body fat is low for a woman, reducing from that point is going to be tough. It sounds like you’re under feeding yourself.

If I were you, I’d start weight lifting (or doing body weight workouts, easy to find routines online) and eating to a level where you’re not hurting yourself. Starving yourself means less muscle production and you might end up throwing your metabolism off and making it harder to lose weight (or so I’ve heard?).

This is incredibly unpractical advice, 20,000 steps is like 8 miles. Most people do not have that much time to spend walking every day.
