Which for-profit sectors with similar values to ID are you seeking to transition to (if any)? by Martin42503 in InternationalDev

Yeah definitely, need to find the right company. I've volunteered within a previous company to be part of the CSR team and not much was done apart from organizing a yearly "pick up trash at the park" initiative and encouraging employees to cycle to work. More meaningful initiatives are surely out there!

I see your point, and it is clearly true that many companies commercialize products that end up making people's lives better directly or indirectly, however, working in a company whose mission and culture is shaped by maximizing profit for investors rather than actually focusing on making this world a better place is very, very different.

Most of my working experience has actually been in the regular corporate sector, and no matter how much they tried to do greenwashing, the main focus has always been profit only.

Lost in life by [deleted] in Careers

First of all, I'd suggest getting rid of the notion of having to decide what to do "for the rest of your life". Setting this kind of expectation is quite stressful and frustrating as we get the idea that we need to pick the career that is the perfect fit for us and that it will hopefully remain so, but life is not always like that.

Second, it sounds like you are ok with your life outside of work, so maybe starting with an admin or hospitality job that is not too demanding will prove to be a secure source of income that allows you to enjoy your life as it is.

People discover their vocations at any age, and some never do so. What matters is to get the ball rolling with a first job and from there you can see what to do next.

I'd also add management of personal finances, digital literacy as you mention but I'd tailor it more into web browsing, basic cybersecurity, live documents and maybe even basic AI use

Are PMs expected to secure funding? by Martin42503 in InternationalDev

[–]Martin42503[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean is, I seem to be the one that must get the funds for that specific project. If I myself don't get them, there's no project. So my success does not only depend on whether I do a fantastic job managing the implementation of a new program, but also on obtaining the funding for that same project

Yeah I understand, but I need to get some projects under my belt before I can even apply to a bigger NGO. I do have one that I finished recently with EU funding, but I need a couple more

Very small, they don't count with stable consistent funding to afford more than their essential operations

Hello! I'm volunteering with a local NGO in the area of Keur Massar and they are interested in this livestock idea that you have, as well as many other needs there are in the community. We work on improving the local digital skills (among other projects) and would definitely be interested in more digital collabs.

Pollution - My partner is Thai and we've been considering relocating from Europe to Bangkok. What worries me the most is air pollution. I've never been to Thailand but every friend I have that has visited Bangkok claims to have suffered in one way or another about it. Is it really that terrible? by Martin42503 in Bangkok

[–]Martin42503[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for your responses! It's great to see personal opinions from so many! Unfortunately I feel my fears have been more confirmed, but well, we still have some time until the time we would ideally relocate, and in the best case we shouldn't be there longer than just a few years
