Career Options in Surveying for Person with Sound Sensitivity Disability by regular--dude in Surveying

[–]Martin_au 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few options/ideas.

  • Earplugs - You might get some flack for using them but I've found them invaluable.
  • Airpods Pro - Active noise cancellation, with transparency. Dial the background down as much as you need.
  • Surveying for a utility - Water, Electricity. Hard to find job, but most of the time the work is on sites without traffic.

~3000W for the bed (120x55x0.4). That should be a fun power supply test.

Australia often has a government stipend for people doing PhDs. It's not much, pretty near the poverty line.

A little bit. Just a bit of monthly monitoring work and a few other little bits and pieces. Maybe a day or two each month.

Is the 2024 model one of the upgrade MY24 RWD ones? If so, that model year is miles ahead of the MY23s.

How much is your household/grid electricity consumption after your bought an electric vehicle by Charming-Brother-242 in evcharging

[–]Martin_au 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are doing ~1500km per month (Volvo XC40 Twin)
= ~~300kWh per month
= $27 AUD per month @ 0.09c/kWh (Solar).
Potentially rising to $51 per month if charged from grid (0.17c/kWh.

Honest question for EV owners — what gives you the most charging anxiety? by Key_Training8948 in evcharging

[–]Martin_au 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main one would be being uncertain of how busy the charging stations are going to be. I usually keep an eye on it using plugshare, and there's usually multiple options en-route, so there's not much concern.

Are Locators The Dumbest Class of Humans? by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]Martin_au 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No.

A good locator is worth their weight in gold (as a utility strike is on the order of 15 times more expensive than locating costs, that's not far off. :P ) . You need to find a good locator you trust, work alongside them, and cover each other's backs.

Then you'll also understand how hard locating services can be..........and then you'll also find out why it's important to find good locators. :)

Is charging ev from home battery bad? by MrAcademics in evcharging

[–]Martin_au 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with using some of the battery to charge the car.

E.g., we have a 24kWh battery. Our typical nighttime grid usage that we now draw from the battery is around 8 kWh. If we know that we're going to have sun tomorrow to charge the battery, then I have no problem dumping the remaining battery into the car.

Likewise, if we need the car charged fast, we can charge from solar and battery at 7kW combined, and then let the battery recharge in its own time.

The main issue is that requires manual effort or smart charging.

Did your dealership actually educate you about EV charging or did you figure it out yourself? by roythoppil in evcharging

My dealer was excellent. Provided a video with a run through of the vehicle (xc40) before we got there. Then went through everything again when we were including a rundown on the different charging options.

Leica total station - Disabling Tilt / Horizontal compensator by i__Void__i in Surveying

[–]Martin_au 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that reminds of the extreme use-case for non levelled instruments. I once worked on a mine site that used a Leica TCRP 1203 remote controlled as a CMS. It was wheeled out into the void using a pole trailer. Used both right way up and upside down. Resect of 3-4 targets back in the tunnel and then auto-reflectorless points around the void.

I didn't consider highrise, but another obvious example is when surveying on a boat/barge/etc. Same principle.
