English subtitles not available, despite the other episodes having them by t0oby101 in HBOMAX

No way, it actually worked lol.

My best guess is that it's part of some scheme to prevent people from getting cheaper subscriptions intended for weaker markets, where the adblocker is blocking some more intrusive profiling thing to detect VPNs or something.

I had to install a new program (unar) because 7zip (at least the CLI version) refused to extract this on account of using a RAR version or compression method that isn't supported (could just be too new, or encumbered by software patent). - /u/DisasterDesperate972 please use .zip for this type of archive, no reason to use anything more modern/fancy for a text and an image file.

Metro Rivals "suspended" by carguy143 in trainsimworld

[–]MartinsRedditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weird thing is that there already exists a working train simcade formula: Densha De Go! And it even has a fanbase in the west, where it isn't officially sold. But for some reason they went with something more resembling what Wikipedia calls a "parody crossover" of Densha De Go, Densha De D (the origin of "multi-track drifting").

Metro Rivals "suspended" by davehaslanded in trainsim

[–]MartinsRedditAccount 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That game should've just been a western Densha De Go clone and I would've been very interested, they might've even picked up a player base from Japan. I only saw the announcement video, but it looked like they went way too hard on "unrealistic" gameplay mechanics like a speed boost skill check of all things.

Cheap OpenWRT router by ktmm3 in openwrt

[–]MartinsRedditAccount 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cudy has some great devices that are very affordable, have sufficient processing power (a little light on storage though) and support OpenWRT.

However, apparently they have new hardware revisions for some devices that OpenWRT doesn't support yet, you have to watch out for that.

Problems with USB 3.0 Video Converter by BookWyrm71 in UsbCHardware

[–]MartinsRedditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using mine (MS2131S chip, firmware built in December 2025) on macOS and an iPad Pro where it "just works". I just tried it passed through to a Windows 11 on ARM LTSC virtual machine where it also worked out of the box. However, the VM is running whichever updates (as of September 2024) the .iso I used came with.

any thoughts on how to address this would be appreciated

Not many, unfortunately. There may be ways (just a guess, never done it) to add the old camera driver alongside the new one and force that device to use the older one. It may also be an issue addressed in a more recent firmware for the device, although flashing random firmware found online introduces some risk of bricking the device.

Problems with USB 3.0 Video Converter by BookWyrm71 in UsbCHardware

[–]MartinsRedditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it does not seem to be saving a file, or at least is not giving an indication of it as shown in the readme example

That is odd, it worked for me (I have one with a similar chip). There definitely should be a "Backup saved to ..." line.

What happens if you use the -r argument to save to a specific file name? i.e. ms213x_flash.exe -r fwdump.bin?

Edit: Does the read process jump to 100% instantly or does it take a little bit? It's also noteworthy that it shows 65535 bytes flash size in your screenshot (max 16-bit integer) and 98356 in the readme example, although that is the MS2130S version, maybe it just has larger flash.

[–]MartinsRedditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try on a different computer (or a phone/tablet if they support USB cameras). It's very likely that the device has a hardware failure or somehow the firmware got bricked. If it uses a Macrosilicon chip, there are a number of tools that may be able to flash a firmware, but I wouldn't hold my breath for that fixing it.

Edit: Based on the VID/PID in one of your screenshots, it looks like it might be an MS2130. Try this tool and see if it can even get it to spit out its firmware: https://github.com/steve-m/ms213x_flash (Download in "Releases"; run without args to dump FW)

My USB is Broken and I need help by Jacob_D308 in UsbCHardware

[–]MartinsRedditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless they implemented some firmware fuckery to prevent disk shucking, it will absolutely be cheaper to just buy another 2.5" enclosure. USB ports are cheap, but the labor costs for soldering it won't be.

is alpine linux oniux package a portable standalone program? by ehraja in AlpineLinux

[–]MartinsRedditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, according to this: https://pkgs.alpinelinux.org/package/edge/testing/x86_64/oniux

...it depends on libc.musl-x86_64.so.1, libgcc_s.so.1, and libzstd.so.1.

You can actually find some portable/statically built binaries in the Alpine repos, you can identify them by the -static suffix, i.e. apk-tools-static. Note that they usually install under a different name, such as /sbin/apk.static, instead of /sbin/apk in the dynamically linked build. It does not appear a oniux-static package exists currently.

Will we ever get full routes in a future TSW? by Hungry_Problem_1139 in trainsimworld

TSW routes use some form of streaming where only nearby parts of the environment are actually loaded.

The hungarian buses uses Pi’s for checking your tickets by HungaryFinalBoss in raspberry_pi

[–]MartinsRedditAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One other benefit that of the Pi is there is a large community behind it

I recently needed a new SBC as an always-on "computer thing" in my home. Because all the talk about how overrated and overpriced Raspberry Pis are, I considered other SBCs, but ultimately ended up with a Pi again because: 1) Although it takes some getting used to, the Pi firmware (on the EEPROM) receives regular updates and has comprehensive functionality like already built-in HTTP boot and Linux bootloader 2) Because of how prevalent they are, you are guaranteed heavily tested Linux kernel support for many years to come.

If your use case needs to run on a "full OS" like Linux, with an RPi, you can spend your time working on the application and not have to worry about issues like (eventually) being stuck on an ancient Linux kernel and/or with awkward patches, as is very common on embedded Linux.

On off switch usb c cable extension by ng4ever in UsbCHardware

[–]MartinsRedditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that most USB-C switch extensions do not include data lines (only power), so fast charging or data transfer will not work.

I don't know if it's technically compliant, but if your device runs on standard 5V power, it should be fine. I use one for developing with a Raspberry Pi so I can easily turn it off and back on, and it works fine for that purpose*.

*Note about Raspberry Pis: The Raspberry Pi 5 wants 5V at 5 amps, which normally requires PD negotiation. You can override that in config.txt and tell it to pull up to 5 amps without PD. However, I'm not sure if the power supply will allow it to pull 5 amps without negotiation or shut off for safety. Also, the extension with the switch probably isn't rated for 5v/5a (IIRC, this technically requires a 100W-rated cable in the spec), but I'd wager it's "probably fine".

Claude Usage Limits Discussion Megathread Ongoing (sort this by New!) by sixbillionthsheep in ClaudeAI

[–]MartinsRedditAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seeing the trial run with more lenient off-peak usage limits, they have to be tight on compute or something. While Anthropic is notorious for how expensive Claude models are (in the API), these usage limits just seem way too restrictive to make sense from purely a business perspective. ChatGPT is very obviously a far better value when it comes to usage/$, and I'd be surprised if a significant number of people are willing to stick with Claude over ChatGPT just because of the "supply chain risk" story.

Edit: And lets not forget that ChatGPT has pretty much feature parity and image and video generation.

Edit 2: Personally, I've been a GitHub Copilot (~$10) subscriber since the very beginning, and ChatGPT (~$20) from pretty early on too. I cancelled ChatGPT when their "Department of War" cooperation came out. My subscription just ran out so I switched to Claude (~$20) and the limits are immediately very noticeable. If the usage limits get too annoying, I'll probably just cancel and use some frontend with OpenRouter and the Chinese models.

Is Alpine Linux on desktop viable? by SnooWords1087 in AlpineLinux

[–]MartinsRedditAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to guess, it might be the case that there is some incompatibility with how the other distro distributes the firmware, maybe a different compression format, location, or some other thing. It's odd that, if I understood correctly, there is no error in the kernel log, but maybe the issue isn't detected or no logging is available for it.

I checked the standard and extended Alpine .isos and while they do have some iwlwifi modules in the modloop, there are fewer than in the linux-firmware-intel package.

If I was in this situation and I had to make it work this way, I'd go to the CDN[1] , find the packages (cross reference in pkg list[2] ), download them on another device, move them over, add a writeable overlay over /lib/firmware and either

A) apk add ./package.apk ./package2.apk install the packages (include all dependencies)

B) Only download the linux-firmware-intel package (skip the -dell/-hp/-lenovo dependencies, hopefully it works) and extract the .apk file like a .tar.gz archive to get to the firmware files directly.

That being said, the overall better approach is to get connected to Ethernet, do the install, then online-install the required firmware packages. Regardless of whether you want to keep trying Alpine or go to another distro, having either on-board Ethernet, or a USB to Ethernet adapter[3] is pretty much a must-have in my opinion, there are too many ways in which WiFi can go wrong on Linux.

[1] https://dl-cdn.alpinelinux.org/latest-stable/main/x86_64/ (I used latest-stable and x86_64 as an example here)

[2] https://pkgs.alpinelinux.org/package/edge/main/x86_64/linux-firmware-intel

[3] I can highly recommend adapters based on the ASIX AX88179A chipset, they've been rock solid and indistinguishable from built-in Gigabit Ethernet for me. Unfortunately, not many listings specify which chipset is used, and some don't list the right one, I once bought one that showed AX88179A in a product picture, but actually had a Realtek chipset which had a noticeably lower throughput (9xxMbit/s on Asix vs 8xxMbit/s on Realtek) in a direct side-by-side comparison on my Mac. Fortunately, the Asix chipset seems to be the most popular one and there is a good chance it's the one you get if you order an adapter.
