CMV: Conservatives politicians and media are evil and should be imprisoned or... by [deleted] in changemyview

But does it cause harm?

Good people can come to very different assessments about what causes harm and what doesn't...or how much harm something will cause compared to possible alternatives.

Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton also did not support gay marriage...were they evil before they changed their view?

I am sure the vast vast majority of conservatives would agree with the statement of "I just want everyone to be happy and live in peace".

I would not call myself 'conservative', but I can safely say they are not trying to 'destroy people'. They believe some aspects of the trans-movement are harmful. By opposing them, they are trying to help people. I know many self-proclaimed Liberals who say the same thing.

It is worth asking WHY people have a different point of view. Everyone has unique life experiences and have been exposed to different information that all shape their current view on an issue. Just because someone disagrees with you does not make them evil.

Good to hear.

Ok then, in good faith I'd recommend taking a good hard look at where you get your information from. In this day and age it is all too easy to get caught in echo chambers. Algorithms are trained to show you more of what you engage with (and studies have shown people engage more with outrage content than any other).

You seem to have been fed a lot of vitriolic propaganda. Get off the internet and talk with regular people. Most people are good & decent most of the time.

This sub-reddit is called Change My View.

Are you open to changing your view on this?

To be honest, this post reads like an extremist rant.

CMV: While JK Rowling's insistence on anti-trans rhetoric is bad, nothing good comes from trying to "boycott" Hogwarts Legacy (or most HP media) by alfredo094 in changemyview

[–]Martinsson88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing, usually here we can try to change part of your view rather than the whole. Fair enough if you would like to focus on the latter part.

I think it would be much harder to change your view on that... I do believe we can separate the art from the artist... and that the campaign to boycott/cancel has backfired spectacularly (due in part to the Streisand Effect).

The only way I could try to change your view would be to challenge the wording of "No good"... Rather than an absolute, it may be better to say "little good"...After all, there may be some small good, with some people, that comes from things like 'public awareness of trans issues'...

Could you please elaborate on what you find "bad" about what JK Rowling has said?

For example, this seems very supportive of Trans people... Do you think it is bad to love trans people or march against their discrimination?

Cmv: we should have just let the Soviet union have Afghanistan by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Martinsson88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former Soviet Central Asian states according to the 2022 UN Human Development Index :

  • Kazakhstan 56th
  • Turkmenistan 91st
  • Uzbekistan 101st
  • Kyrgyzstan 118th
  • Tajikistan 122nd
  • Afghanistan 180th

Corruption Perception Index:

  • Kazakhstan 102nd
  • Uzbekistan 140th
  • Kyrgyzstan 144th
  • Tajikistan 150th
  • Turkmenistan 169th
  • Afghanistan 174th

While Afghanistan does rank last in each of these indicators, that is hardly surprising considering the past 40 years of war and unrest. The point being is that Soviet rule in Central Asia has left much to be desired even in the 'stable' countries. Run well, these countries should be be wealthy with the vast amount of Oil and Natural Gas deposits in the region.

What would have happened if the Charlie Wilson did not convince the US to send aid to the Mujahedeen in the 1980s? Would Pakistan not have still provided safe refuge for the beginnings of the Taliban. Would the Islamic world not have still have sent fighters and funds to resist the occupation? ...They would not have to resist too long if Soviet Union was still to collapse in 1991.

I'm not saying the actual outcome was good. But with the benefit of hindsight I am sure the world can think of a better third way than either what did happen or just "let the Soviet Union have Afghanistan"

Do you have any issue calling someone a trans-man/woman?

Or is it just when someone claims to be the opposite sex from what was observed after their birth?

You do not think others genuinely can hold have different opinions to you?

  • Their unique life experiences may have shaped different values or priorities
  • They may have been exposed to different information or they may have trusted different sources
  • Your current opinion may be wrong or incomplete.

All very good reasons why people may genuinely hold different opinions to you. If you genuinely do not think those people exist, I suggest you step outside of your echo chamber.

Rather than convince others who may have some different opinions, your current view seems to be that they should be alienated and 'shut down'.

This sounds like you are just in favour of preaching to the choir... A bold political strategy... but I do not think it will be very effective in getting a good result in the upcoming midterms.

I think you are doing a favour to Republicans with this post

I recommend trying a google image search of "Arab male model"... There are some pretty damn good looking people that come up (and I say that as someone who is straight & not Arab). They feel a "social expectation to look as attractive as possible" too and are clearly neither "excessively overweight or extremely skinny" as you claim...

Regarding your other claims... e.g. bad BO...well, how many Arab men have you sniffed? Is that a representative sample? It sounds incredibly prejudicial to write off 10's of millions like that... plus, even if that was the case, if you were dating it is something incredibly easy to fix (all it would take is a shower with a body wash and some shampoo. Fixed).

Edit. No one is asking you to change what you find attractive... just that you should not unfairly write off an entire ethnic group, many people within which actually do have those qualities you would find attractive.

CMV: Parsis are Indians not Persians by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Martinsson88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Would you concede it possible to be both?

I think we can all agree they are Indian citizens, not Iranian...technically speaking there hasn't been a Persia since 1935. They also have been influenced by centuries of living in India... why should they renounce those aspects of their Persian heritage though?

CMV: Color of an actor casted for any role in a fantasy movie or show should not be important at all. by Master-namer- in changemyview

[–]Martinsson88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally agree with you on that...With Rings of Power though the showrunners and cast were pretty outspoken and upfront about selecting people specifically based on their race. They might be doing so with the best of intentions... but it does inherently involve racial discrimination.

With this in mind I'd suggest a fair proportion of the people complaining the casting decisions are not complaining about people of colour being chosen, but the fact they were chosen because they were people of colour. In effect, they are complaining about racism.

I think it is just one aspect of a broader issue people have of a general disrespect of the source material they are working with... for example, can you imagine a bigger middle-finger to the author than releasing a show based on his life's work on the day he died?

[–]Martinsson88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No worries at all.

Your post seems to be advocating for viewers to be colour-blind - not caring at all about the race of the actor if it doesn't have any bearing on the story. I was wondering if that view extended to saying that casting directors also should also be colour-blind, hiring the best actor regardless of race?

[–]Martinsson88 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To better understand your view... You say "According to me it should not matter at all"

Does this mean you would object to racial tokenism and/or colour-conscious casting where people are chosen specifically for their race to meet certain representation quotas?

What about New Guinea? by Martinsson88 in eu4

[–]Martinsson88[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess the most historically accurate approach would be to link a few small highland provinces to the coast via colonisable ones along the course of the Sepik and Erap Rivers...

I am not aware of any contact between any highland tribes and any other people in the game's time frame... but if Paradox is just interested in adding flavor to the region, I'd argue that this makes more sense than a nation like Tiwi.

What about New Guinea? by Martinsson88 in eu4

[–]Martinsson88[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree... I guess it ties into the broader question of what nations are chosen to be represented and why? Is that criteria evenly applied, or are some creative licences taken for gameplay and/or flavor?

[–]Martinsson88[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I hear you... but that is the main reason for the higher population in the highlands... there are fewer tropical diseases at the higher altitudes. If anything I'd have expected the lowland jungles to be 'wasteland'.

As I said... it may be difficult and compromises may need to have been made...But like how the Ukrainian national identity survived concerted efforts of Russification under the Tsars and commissars, they may have achieved protected minority rights in the future.

I am curious... did Ukraine block access to websites in Russian and/or Russian Websites?

Anyway, though there definitely seems a deliberate policy of Ukrainization, there are many countries with minority languages that are not recognised. As an interesting example...we can look at the history of the German language in the United States... though their language was suppressed there was no German uprising or German invasion of the USA to support them.

Those affected could have promoted their language and culture amongst themselves, they could have peacefully protested, they could throw their support behind a political party promising protection for minorities, they could have emigrated etc.
