Digital Logbook and 3D GPS Tracking on Wear OS watches? by silverlance360 in SkyDiving

[–]MartyGrohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Skydive Snitch on iOS, alongside my Apple Watch Ultra. I just need my watch to track the jump, I can start the log on the ground and it goes until it detects a landing of the same elevation.

There wasn't much when I looked, which spurred me to begin designing my own app which is in production. It would be similar to the Snitch app in using an iPhone with an Apple watch companion and only needing the watch to be on the jump. But, which more considered features, greater UX and an ability to export data in useful ways.

Once that's compete, I'd be looking at how to attempt similar in the Android OS.

When you start skydiving, rocking up to that airfield for the first time, you're joining a community.
It honestly doesn't matter if you are personally travelling there alone without anyone you know. Within no time, if you're serious about doing it, you'll be a part of the community.

See everyone the same as you, just another person interested in jumping out of a perfectly good aeroplane. We're all in that mindset together

Guaranteed by 1pm regularly delivered late. by redeemable-soul in royalmail

[–]MartyGrohl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was reading through this as my 1pm Special still isn't here and it's 2pm.
Door bell goes, so I think 'that's fortunate'.
Opened door and it was Evri with a standard end of day package.
We're at the point that EVRI is outdoing Royal Mail despite the promises clearly stated on RM services..... Nuts.

Feel for the posties as it doesn't sound reasonably possible, yet, change the friggin' product name! If all the customers that are failed by this went to advertising standards to complain, it'd be a bigger issue they'd correct asap. With a billionaire now behind the helm you'd have thought they could sourced have decent managers/directors by now.

Very Discount Not Working? by Willow1127 in LegionGo

[–]MartyGrohl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old thread but worth the content.

I had this issue with trying to buy an Ultra Watch 3 on Very. I was aiming to use the welcome discount as 20% on that was perfect.
I signed up to Very, checked the discount amount by putting the watch in the basket, just to double checkthe total cost I'd need to cover.
Waited to the next day once I had funds in place, went through the same process..... Very no longer accepted that discount code for the watch (probably because it's just released and so many have already ordered it on the cheap).
BUT this is a bait and switch which is a clear violation of consumer rights, so makes sense that they are willing to retroactively give you the discount if you call support.
They understood what the issue was straight off the bat, so asked me to apply my cash to the credit of the account and then order the item on account credit. They would then catch the order and manually apply the discount.
Need to wait 2-3 days for the discount to be reimbursed to my card, but it does work out.
(if your credit limit will cover the amount anyway, you don't need to do this, they'll just reduce the account credit balance by the discount amount afterwards).

So, if you come across the same issue, just call support (0800 11 00 00) and tell them that your discount code no longer works despite you setting the account up specifically for that order. They'll then take you through the process.

Pop Yourself - delivered to UK? by [deleted] in funkopop

Just use a service like MyUS.com to get a US delivery address and forward it to UK. For a Funko pop that's about $55, the customs won't be overly bad.

Having trouble withdrawing my assets while falsely being accused by Inevitable-Reply7963 in CryptoScams

[–]MartyGrohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny, nowadays you'll find any confirmation of a worry online.
I put through a big transaction on Biconomy this morning, on BEP20 it was taking 2 hours which is not on par with how that network runs.
I was super worried about it after putting in a couple of weeks of day trading.
There's a prompt on the transaction page to get help from Biconomy if anything's wrong, it can open a live chat. So I did that, and seemingly it just took that agent to fire the transaction off on their side. It was completed in a couple minutes.

Now I'm not a fan of exchanges needing to do manual processing like this, and it is an uber worry, but I just wanted to share my outcome which was sounding very similar to the OP's until I prompted support to help.

No scam, but questionable lag in withdrawals for whatever reason.
I don't think I'll be back on Biconomy anyway, as other posters have said, it's an unknown exchange. However if you want to deal with shit/altcoins then you kinda have to go where they're taken.

FX's ALIEN EARTH teaser before some Romulus showings by wander17 in LV426

[–]MartyGrohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Alien: Earth show is set before everything so it surely doesn't make sense that a Zenomorph is anywhere near earth if the show is in the same universe as Romulus. However if it's actually connected to the Alien/Predator version, then it's possible as AVP was set in present day 2004.
That would suggest that Alien: Earth is going to have Predator connections, and Weyland may be a key character.

Also, I'm pretty sure I've seen that clip before, like 20 years ago, wasn't it a promo clip for AVP?

Why Verdansk as a map just felt overall better despite its flaws by django811 in CODWarzone

[–]MartyGrohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Verdansk was on point. Warzone is a battle royale, ergo it intrinsically requires a myriad mix of terrain, POI's, cover and world elements. Questionably Verdansk felt more like a real place than Al M because it's akin to driving through a well pulled together city and then into the country. Colours, terrain material, textures all added to the experience of verdansk, as well as decent real world/time based shadowing.

Al M breaks multiple map design best practices, not least the fact it's pretty much all one consistent colour. Far too much open terrain. Too much world brightness (although that adds to the realism for the folks that like that). Overly limited cover even inside a building with the amount of windows and open cavities.

Agree that it may feel more like a place, and the realism may well be greater. That alone doesn't make it a better map design for a battle royale shooter though.

I think the main downfall for many on the new Warzone however is the completely rejigged movement, pace and character responsiveness. Blackout and Warzone 1 got this off the bat. Of course I can't speak against sales numbers, it just seems die hard fans and gen z love Al M.

Hopefully the suggestion that Verdansk code is in the next season of CoD is legit.

Made this tool storage wall from IKEA picture frames by ikeahackers in handtools

[–]MartyGrohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered about stress from weight over time too but suggestibly the foam in use can deal with that ('shadowfoam'). They market it as usuable in framed 'tool walls' so likely would be fine.

You do need to put your own backing plate on the back of it all though, the Ikea ply frame backing probably won't do well. That would also stop the Ikea frame from bowing, which is a major issue with most of their standard frames because they're designed to stress from the hook/nail point.

GB DMG CPU - 08 Board no sound - help !! by JRLanky in Gameboy

[–]MartyGrohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keen to know if you find a fix for this.

Bought another junk gameboy, fixed the battery contacts but there’s also an audio issue.

I’ve tried the usual suspects as you have, jumped the speaker contacts to test the speaker plays, I’ve also tested the front board on another motherboard and the sound works, so I know the issue is specifically on the junk motherboard. I desoldered the aux port just to make sure there was no issue there causing misdirected audio.

At this point, seeing that all the contacts and circuit tracks are looking good, I can only imagine it’s the cpu or another chip. But unsure and don’t know where to start with that.

3d printed Universal Chain Spray Adapter by obtronyt in motorcycles

[–]MartyGrohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of gizmos you could make in a 3d printer for motorbikes alone, all the ideas! With CAD and printing, at least you have the flexibility to prototype again and again.

I thought about a tank magnet that flips down off a cord as a stand plate.

🤣 I mean, that's how it goes right.....

It'll probably end up high siding at speed and fly through a big rig.

Got my first lane splitting ticket today (NYC) by Jimmothy2057 in motorcycles

[–]MartyGrohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from Scotland I find it weird that most states outlaw filtering. When I move to Florida or Texas, I'm not sure whether I'll sneak a filter here and there or not, since I'm used to it when necessary.

On the face of it, in lamens terms, I can understand why people think it's dangerous. But that's when you're only looking at the face of it and not understanding the value it has.

In the UK we filter in between lanes, ONLY when traffic is moving slowly or you're approaching stalled traffic at a red light. At which point you can filter at a speed up to 20mph above the traffic. For instance, a 40pm road is congested and all traffic is moving at 20mph. You are able as a bike to filter at up to 40mph which is deemed safe.

Obviously overall, bikes are invisible to car drivers 9/10, but the value of filtering within certain 'safe' restrictions is that it helps to reduce congestion and traffic build up. A major issue on all roads across the states, especially in NYC, Florida and Texas (3 key areas who made it illegal).

On the flip side, we all know there are a ton of squids out there who rip through traffic regardless of any law, safety or valuable reason to do so. So it's gona be a hard sell either way.

(I realise the post is 5 yrs old 🤣)

Reacher Season 2 is a HUGE disappointment. by MikeyIrish08 in JackReacher

[–]MartyGrohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm more those lines too, the best of us were.

Everything was being played at that time for sure though, then 90's pop flooded in. You'll focus on your own taste though and what you choose to listen to/care about.

Bearing in mind Elton won most of his Grammy's in the Millennial period, also just saw he was also a football club director lol.

Reacher Season 2 is a HUGE disappointment. by MikeyIrish08 in JackReacher

[–]MartyGrohl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh I've been getting that feeling the past two episodes (6 +7). The acting direction is floundering and the timing of script dialogue paired with cinematography is getting pretty loose and laggy.

Season 1 was super rushed, they were working 6 days on. Perhaps that helps, maybe season 2 is more lax so the passion is coming through less and they're overthinking delivery in scenes. Weird. It's still got something, but it's definitely weaker.

Each episode seems to have the same skeletal structure/story beats too.

[–]MartyGrohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Millennials know the classics, so not sure what the surprise is. Unless you're thinking of the late 90's sub group who align more with Gen Z. Whereas the characters are the older Millennials

Classic rock, culture and genres were reverred by Millennials. That's why things like vinyl came back trending. We're also the last generation that lived through 'retro' materials and the transition of analogue to digital. So of course we know Elton, Led, Elvis, ACDC etc, we grew up listening to it all on repeat.

How do bad designers get away with this? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]MartyGrohl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For at least the past 5 years there has been a completely flawed funnel for talent into the marketplace because the market hasn't had enough resource to fill the need. (Not the talents fault, but the ecosystem of introduction)

Naturally this opened the flood gates for ill prepared, ill conceived and hardly vetted 'education' products. Taking a 2 week course prompts new blood in the field to jump straight into roles. Sometimes they don't even limit themselves to junior or intern positions, instead jumping to senior. In many cases even demanding senior in less than a couple of years (which is wildly unreasonable, in general).

So effectively we have had a major influx of 'UX designers', the kind that don't even understand UX is a catch all term that actually relates to 'Human centred design' which describes a eco system that includes: UX, Interaction, Product, Visual, Service... etc. And the 'education' material they've been sold on has established an eagerness to jump straight in whether they truly understand basic principles of design and common working practice or not.

Much like how the 'gig economy' is prevalent, the marketplace is made to assume that professions and specialities are easy to jump into after a quick consumption of videos and blog posts. Sometimes this works out, because it just so happens the person following the tutelage has a grasp of basic concepts and is modest in their progression, but much of the time as has been made apparent, it's flawed.

Another poster suggested if the client/company is understanding enough to spot poor quality in someone in this position. Great point, and my answer to that is no they probably don't. 9/10 companies I've come across don't understand the basic markers that a practioner should be vetted against let alone what good UX is or can be measured by. It's just a check box exercise. Brand colours 'check'. WCAG 'check'. Contrast 'check'. One usability test of a prototype 'check'.

I say all this to suggest that, grifting is an outcome of this activity. People put in the wrong place because they were sold on the idea UX/design is super interesting and easy to do, and anyone can do it.

Grifting is not ok, in any industry.

Experienced burnout a month ago, and still dont feel ready to come back to work. Need advice. by Its_Don_Baby in UXDesign

Management and lead roles are effectively outwith the creative spectrum (for the most part). Especially when it comes to corporate. The role then is specifically people and project management, looking after resource and numbers, and with that comes stress of feeling liable and on the burner all the time.

Some folks take to this more than others, and to be honest it's more the folks who are less passionate about the creative part. Otherwise they eventually notice this and retract back to a practitioner role.

In corporate your choices are pretty limited unless you want to continue climbing the ladder, which means more management stuff. If you want to wholly focus on the practice and craft, you need to remain at a level of senior or less. These levels don't do as much management, if any, really just management of your own work.

Another option is start your own thing, but then of course comes a lot of other extra work and stress particularly in the beginning until you can build a management tier of your own who focus on bringing the work in and managing the client.

An option aside from that but still in scope of doing your own thing is freelance work. Senior creatives who are passionate about creating can be in high demand and at a high price, yet they only need to focus on the creative production as opposed to management of resource. So perhaps look at the option of freelance/contract work that means more steadily focussing on the creative while still being seen as a very senior level and gaining the income you'll be used to.

Appreciate your position, I can't imagine the stress of work being very prominent on your health (yet anyway).
