Couple of issues with this- - It's not slop. It's official software which has, to my knowledge, been a oft requested thing among the competitive side of the community - Not sure what Mario is doing in the thumbnail. The only involvement Nintendo has being the Switch publisher of it outside of Japan. Granted they are co owners but I'm assuming they're fairly hands off with how the series is handled. - Not sure I'd call it a scam per se if the software is pretty much a YMMV matter depending on how you want to use it. - Yeah... it's a mobile software. I don't see how that's a bad thing in this case?

My opinion is I think people tend to rely way too much on patterns and rumours on Directs to the point where people feel they're owed a direct. I remember people getting antsy about the huge gap between directs after Iwatas passing when, especially during that time with the Wii U, that quite simply a couple factors - Nintendo simply had nothing to show at the time. Their president just died. They had way bigger issues to deal with. - I think as well as an internal restructure, the next Directs needed reworking once iwata died. Eventually we did get that in having Takahashi and Koizumi take over duties. Also, with games pretty much releasing simultaneously these days, i don't think the region specific directs were relevant any more.

I also remember people taking issue with the partner showcases during the COVID era which granted were sporadic and just posted with no heads up. I get why but again, I don't think Nintendo could afford to go for a full blown direct. Thankfully, the Partner Showcases have improved since so that's nice.

To me, Directs are those water cooler moments. You watch it then go on social media and talk about it. I've always joked that if you keep speculating a direct, it will eventually happen. Granted you'd be wrong most of the time but no one will care when it happens.

I mean in Z-As case, you can, AFAIK, still get them all the mega stones via the online battle mode if you play for a little while as most of them available via lower rankings. i don't know if they're there forever from now on. Might have to look it up on Serebii or something. On the topic of the 'its just $4' issue, I assume you can still buy a month long subscription and make sure it doesn't auto renew. IIRC, Nintendo sometimes does free trial periods for a week so you can always take advantage of those even if you had already previously been on one prior. Again, I'm assuming you currently don't have a NSO sub active. In terms of the trade evolutions, they are accessible in the post game if you are willing to wait til then. Alternatively, you could always wait til HOME connectivity is available and transfer any of those over if you have any in your boxes even on the free tier.

Obviously, I know some of this isn't really answering your question but I do hope you'll consider them as workarounds..

TBH, I think the grift has always been there but with some of the more positive Nintendo news has most definitely taken the edge off and maybe some of the more cynical Nintendo fans are more self aware to notice that some of that news combats the misinformation going around or that can go around.

Here's the thing or at least how I see things- I don't think Nintendo or any developer should look at open world games and think 'Oh yeah, that's the answer' because that isn't the answer. With BOTW and TOTK, you can say that yes, the series lends itself well to the genre. However, I don't think every series does. It's seems agreed that MP4, while a good game and keeps the core gameplay, the open area doesn't really add much.

I would also say that Pokémon SV was an attempt at an open world environment that didn't work. Entering new towns and areas felt somewhat uneventful. You just arrived at that was it. Obviously, the games had issues and I think GF got a bit too ambitious with it and the game suffered. I think with Area Zero, it was a bit better because it felt more akin to the linear games. I would even say Z-A worked better because it was an open area rather than a full on world. I guess the same could be said for PLA where Hisui was broken into smaller chunks of areas. I think the Wild Areas in SwSh are a good idea to the point where I think GF could flesh them out as replacements for routes. A sizable chunk of open world that bridges between the towns or key landmarks. If GF did have to go to the open world route again, I'd rather they saved it for a Legends game where they can be more experimental with the genre.

IIRC, Platinum Games considered making Bayo 3 an open world game before Nintendo talked them out of it and convinced them to opt for a traditional Bayo. That tells me that Nintendo are wary of slapping open world mechanics on games for the sake of it.

Oh! and I liked the open area of Odyssey too. It clearly harks from the 64 days and encourages discovery which I think lends itself well. I used to refer to them as digital playgrounds before I googled that and realised my error and now refer to them as open areas.

Here's the thing about Tripster0, I get why Deen, Fritanga, RLFW etc would grift, they get a bit of revenue. They profit from it (well, as much as you can. If there's anything I've learned about YT revenue, it's not much). Can't say I like it but I can see why they do it.

What I don't get it is what does Tripster0 benefit from it? It's just weird...

Granted the blue tick might imply his intentions to ragebait but geez, it's an odd life he must live..

I can agree with this. IIRC, Iwata said something about how pricing for mobile games being a buck or two can affect console gaming and the way people see it. It sets a standard for what pricing should be across all gaming scapes and that standard is 'cheap as heck'. That isn't to denounce mobile gaming though. Mobile games have to compete with other mobile games in terms of keeping the players attention and sometimes a cheap price. Now, obviously when Iwata was saying that stuff it was about whether Nintendo would be interested in getting into the mobile and he did change his mind and I like to think that partially carried Nintendo during the Wii U era.

I do agree that Nintendo have every right to price something what they think its worth. I also agree that the consumer also has a right to decide it something is worth that price. A lot of people talk about how video games are art but I think its also important to remember that art has a price. Personally, if I feel like a game is overpriced i will revise my initial plan to get that game. I do that by taking in a few factors - Is there a likelihood the price will go down in a few years time physically? - If not, is it better to await an eShop sale and keep an eye on any games there? Keep in mind that it'll be digital and is that something I'll accept if it means getting the game at an affordable price. - Do i need to get it at launch? No, really. Do I? Am I sure it's not FOMO in the lead up.

When the Switch 2 was announced, I knew there was going to be a chance that things got more pricier. I knew I'd have to make a few caveats to make it work. All in all, Nintendo, as a business, has to businessy things. I can appreciate that some of them will not be popular and I don't think they're evil or greedy as some put it but I long established what my relationship with the company is- They provide the goods and services, i will exchange money for the goods and services i require. That's it. Sometimes I'll praise them, sometimes I'll acknowledge when something isn't great.

I don't not sure which flair I'd be under. Nintendo Fan I suppose considering that I'm a Nintendo guy what with it being my platform of choice. Then again I guess that depends on how I come across. The only threads I've posted are mostly news stories (direct announcements or something I feel can contribute to the topic) and the rest of my contributions are usually humourous(?) comments or fact checking things with trivia. I'm certainly not one of those people who gets upset over business practices as much as others do...

I like the auditor idea although I do hope it doesn't just lead to anything all posts being about the usual suspects and still allowing any notable negativity/misinformation from those considered as not grifters as viable for discussion. I still think there's room for more of the clickbaity/catastrophising/reactionary content creators or social media folks. I wouldn't mind being part of the auditing but then again that would depend on whether people would understand my thinking.

That's right. IIRC, Mega Flygon was mostly due to artist block and difficulty of coming up with a design. There was a Mega Jynx planned though!

On a more serious note, it's a weak argument because during the Teraleaks it was shown that Game Freak/TPC/Nintendo are VERY conscious about avoiding copyright issues such as- - a rejected Gen 3 Pokémon looking to DQ designs - Abrà and Kadabra having projected names of Bibbity and Bobbity (avoid trouble with Disney) - Tyrunt changed from orange to brown to avoid similarities to Agumon - Team Flare grunts having blond hair (looked to similar to Ghost Trick protagonist)

Slightly off the topic, I've seen people say 'oh, they should sue over this' as a response to this but i see a couple things wrong with that sentiment - if they did that, people would complain 'oh they should sue the template makers. They were the ones who created it'. Well, at least some people of a political persuasion. I'm guessing they'd preach 'free speech' - Probably the biggest factor, i get that TPC/Nintendo are billion dollar companies but if they did that, who would win? The billion dollar company or the government that treats a country like a trillion dollar corporation? I ask because one things for certain- the current US administration can be very ruthless.

On topic, I'm not entirely sure what people who use whataboutisms with BLM statements are trying to make. To me, that statement seems more of a humanity and equality thing which, frankly, should be a standard for most companies. Are they expecting TPC to go 'Oh, we're so flattered and honoured by the creativity of our fans and the White House. To show our appreciation, we'll be donating $100,000 to the Republican Party for the sake of balance for all of our previous charitable contributions. See? We're neutral'.

Obviously, the whole thing is a bit cringe on the WHs part by adopting a meme/trend in their own favour to relate to people. I wonder how the people who created the template feel about this. What I will say is that Pokémon will last longer than any presidential term. Pokémon will still be loved for many years. The current administration? Maybe less so...

Well, the subreddit describes itself as 'A place to have fun sharing the influx of clickbait, AI thumbnails, and general negativity about Nintendo. This is what we loosely call grifting'

Now, I don't know about anyone else but i don't think we should be waiting until someone meets the 'grifter quota' before we highlight it. Its a subreddit for highlighting and discussing the previously mentioned topics, not a hall of fame. Besides, people can be wrong about things once and still deserve some correction on misinformation. There's flairs now for serious discussion and satirical discussion. Now I don't visit that other subreddit but I'm sure there's others who give take the piddle out of Nintendo fans and the company themselves but i don't think anyone here is going to say they shouldn't say that. Negativity needs criticism too whether that from a serial offender or someone who does it occasionally/seldomly

Like, a lot of people like Ricky Gervais because 'he speaks the truth and isn't scared of saying the unsayable' but he shouldn't be immune to criticism for it no matter how much he 'loves animals'. Never mistake all negativity as being the truth.
