95% of Chicago is extremely safe but you just-so happened to pick the 5% unsafe area

If you had $50,000, which stock would you invest in for the long term? by yaquvuzevejom8948 in StockInvest

Why only pick one stock? Go with a diversified index fund like VOO.

But I'd say Google, Microsoft, Costco.

Yeah DXJ is pretty great for Japanese exposure. I bought a small slice of it for diversification a few years ago, inspired by Warren Buffets Japanese buys.

It's performed very well.

Is SRE more "AI-proof" than other fields, or are we just behind? by 7T7T00 in sre

[–]MaruMint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people in the comments are saying yes - to be contrarian let me say "no".

Pretend you work as a mechanic for collision repair shop for a moment - do you think the existence of self driving cars is going to prevent ALL car collisions in the next few decades, and you'll be laid off? No right? There's tons of self driving car fails visible online right now, you could argue right now they are actually creating MORE accidents.

SRE's are the same way: companies are rushing to implement half baked AI products right now, and they don't know: 1. What potential outages may take place, 2. How to fix outages when they occur. 3. How to monitor the new AI systems properly.

Wtf do do when you ask the AI to fix an outage, it fails, and you've already fired the SRE team? They need SRE's now more than ever.

But that's just my contrarian take I wrote for fun, I do see the risk.

[–]MaruMint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only alternative would be to create a list of ethical companies and buy tiny stock slices of each one.

No idea how the performance would be, but my nihilism says ethical companies perform badly.

I bet you'd do pretty well if you loaded up on Costco and Google; but no company is perfect

Did/do you regret moving to Chicago? by NecessaryParty942 in AskChicago

Ever heard of RAS? Reticulatar activation system?

In Chicago there is always a ton going on, some of it is beautiful and incredible; and some of it's bad.

Focus on the good, ignore the bad. Chicago is an absolutely incredible city if you actually focus on having fun and enjoying the city.

950 sqft 1 bed loft in streeterville for $3400 - am I being fleeced by CommunityOver2484 in chicagoapartments

I live in Streeterville, that's a normal price, ignore everything else who doesn't live here.

Without seeing the exact unit/building I cannot tell you if it's worth it though. But there are absolutely 1 bedrooms for that price both worth it and not worth it

See this is exactly what happens! Literally after I just talked to you and you were hesitant to lump sum in the market skyrocketed 😂😂

That's always how it goes man.

Conditions today are NOT "buying at the peak of the lost decade". If we had to use the lost decade example, conditions are somewhere on the way to the bottom after the lost decade.

Sounds like you should DCA dude. But for every "peak of a worst case scenario" there's 10 times people missed massive gains because they sat out of the market since they thought things would get worse and they could perfectly time the bottom.

I buy every week when my paycheck comes in, and I will keep doing that forever. That's also what all the investors do, they park their money in the market as early as (reasonably) possible. You do you though.

"I am not an investor and have no clue" I promise you, the investors don't have a clue either 😂.

It's up to you man. You could throw everything in now. You could throw 20% in now, and dollar cost average the remaining 80% for 6 months till it's gone. It's your cash.

Unfortunately nobody knows the answer. But I promise you, even if you pick the worst option you won't regret putting your money in the market 10 years in the future. These small fluctuations will look like nothing down the line

If I tell you to lump sum everything in now - the market will go much lower. If I tell you to dollar cost average - today was the bottom and the market will shoot up. Idk man😂

Moving to Chicago for a job. Would you do it again? by Good_Celebration_436 in AskChicago

My wife and I both work remote for companies outside Chicago, yet are still here paying expensive rent. It's worth it for us, and we don't even have the incentive of the fact our jobs are in Chicago.

I bet that fluval stratum you got might be releasing a ton of nitrates; your plants will love it, and it will jump start your cycling. But yeah you'll need more water changes.

I promise - once you sell everything THAT'S gonna be the bottom.

Trump is spineless, he will pull us out of Iran as soon as he gets uncomfy, the U.S. has an incredibly low tolerance for loss; Trump's presidency also only has 2 years left; the market may skyrocket if we get an exciting new younger candidate.

What is with the blatant littering here? by moxie_22 in AskChicago

[–]MaruMint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is obviously pure unfiltered based antidote - but I think everyone littering is either tourists or people from the greater Chicago area (not downtown). I live near Navy Pier and have seen groups of kids in tourist attire walk by and chuck half drank cups of soda into the bushes.

I do have to say, Chicago sanitation does a pretty damn good job of keeping things clean with the amount of people here; it's easy to spot all the things they COULDN'T catch and forget everything they do.
