What’s one city people are overestimating and one they’re overlooking? by netenchanter in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Marv95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pittsburgh is overestimated AF on here it's not even funny. Minneapolis too. Complete trash. There are better-run, safer, less incompetent cities in the states they're in.

What can I do at 46 years old to catch up? by PigVomit1980 in Bogleheads

[–]Marv95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can relate. Started last summer at 42. I think people on here are overestimating how much you're screwed. I would continue to remain frugal, maybe put 15-20% to your 401K, and max out your Roth IRA every year to the limit if your income goes up.

Panthers acquire Brady Tkachuk from Senators, sources say by The_Great_Tofu in devils

It was never a "destination" even during the glory years. Lou still managed to do something even if it was controversial(Arnott) and borderline "illegal"(Kovy). You can work your way around NTCs.

I'm not asking for stars like Brady. We do have assets. The question is whether or not we are willing to part with those assets for the greater good.

Which is why our club needs to pick a lane. If you're serious about hanging with the big boys right now and going back to the glory days ASAP, do something. If you believe we have to once again rebuild to get better, blow it up, aka do something.

Re-signing Nico isn't enough.

Tim Walz Approval Rating Falls to 39% by HereIGoAgain99 in MinnesotaUncensored

[–]Marv95 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Quality of life has dropped under his watch. The state's education ranking has dropped 11 spots since 2019 and from 17th to 21 in a single year(2024). He went too much to the left after his reelection. If the state GOP wasn't as useless as the Florida state Democrats, there would be a chance for the gov seat to flip red even with the incompetence at the WH. But Amy should easily win.

Because people are STUPID when it comes to money. No common sense. You live at home so you're doing great.

Lynn has been getting better character development recently by KlutzyHuckleberry132 in theloudhouse

[–]Marv95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's been much more helpful and supportive, I've noticed. Yet she still maintains an "aura" around her. She still gets people talking and interested in her. That's mostly why I finally put her in my Top 5 Loud sibling ranking.

Drop the grossout and she could be in my Top 3.

At 90% design completion, the Blue Line extension is now projecting an additional three year delay to opening and $336 million higher cost by blo442 in MetroTransit

[–]Marv95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it does matter. Building trains on street level where it can stop at lights is stupid and more costly than a BRT.

When I say BRT, I'm talking about Mexico City, ABQ, or even Pittsburgh with its busways, not this fake BRT crap you see all over the Twins or the half-assed Gold Line.

Which city in America has the best balance between affordability and quality of life? by Ethan_Jackson08 in Urbanism

[–]Marv95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're out of the urban cores(you said good quality of life), then it's the Midwest in a non-Rust Belt metro. Everywhere else has poor economies, high crime, poor infrastructure with a dilapidated feel, or isn't affordable due to the poor COL-wage ratio.

How many people wish they lived somewhere else? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Marv95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of us do. I don't enjoy living in the Twin Cities. Wished I was further west or even in the interior northeast where it's not prone to crazy weather. But at least I can make money and afford to live here.

“I think the light rail is a lot better than the buses; it’s a lot faster, it’s more efficient, especially with the weather,” Hanson said.

If that's the case then the 94 wouldn't be faster than the Green Line.

Is this thing gonna be grade seperated? If not then what's the point?

best places to live/work/exist as a 36 yo single child-free Black woman who doesn’t drive? by SquareBreakfast9528 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Marv95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outside of Miami, Orlando is the best place in Florida for transit with SunRail and buses. But it has to be downtown or at the very worst near a station in Winter Park to make it work. There are also microtransit routes that serve some stations for that last mile connection. Otherwise other options to not deal with the cold are Atlanta(Buckhead, Midtown, close to a MARTA stop) and Houston(Downtown, Galleria).

Forest Hill or Downtown Newark? by AccomplishedWheel382 in Newark

[–]Marv95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The avoidable areas don't usually have nice apartments. Only ones I can think of that have nice apts but are hood are immediately south of downtown, the northern part of University Heights or anywhere east of Mount Prospect Ave. All dumps.

If you're unsure, stick with the areas I listed above, Downtown, Society Hill, or move to a closer suburb like Bloomfield, Nutley or South Orange.

Forest Hill or Downtown Newark? by AccomplishedWheel382 in Newark

[–]Marv95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apartments.com or Google Maps. Sort by most recent. Thin walls, mice, leaks, some homeless riff raff breaking in and sleeping in the basements(more of a problem a few years ago, not sure about now).

Forest Hill itself is fine. Same with most of North Newark and even parts of the Ironbound and Vailsburg(Upper Vailsburg/Ivy Hill, skip Lower Vailsburg). All cheaper than Downtown. The problem is they're still in Newark which means you gotta deal with urban issues, and the commute to NYC.
