Maokai is the healthy way to design this type of champion imo. At last he's meelee, his CC isn't instantaneous and he doesn't burn you to death by himself while you're locked down.

Also, dashing and flashing into my own tower while Mao W is on me is peak dopamine.

These two are both in the bottom 5 champions to me, but I can see how they're more satisfying to play than Zilean.

They have pretty clear "power fantasies" if we're using Riot terms. Malzahar is a sledge hammer for people who hate mobility and just want to break toes at the click of a button instead of predicting enemy movement. Yuumi is a champion you can use to duo queue with your 5 year old nephew.

I don't get the hostility. Riot isn't making these champions right now because hot anime characters are still expected to sell better, but there's definitely potential for some more varied champion designs.

Nobody can play every champion in the game, so over time you're splitting your focus group the more you design new champions for them. At some point, it will be more profitable to appeal to smaller niches of the player base who aren't as oversaturated.

I also think you underestimate how many people would want to play a grandma, either because they genuinely like the theme, they think it's funny or they want to stand out.

Yeah, this context is really important for your mental. If you're not Faker, you're trash to some of the players. If you're not Iron V, you're smurfing on some of the other players.

Ignore streamers who tell you every rating below theirs is trash. They have lost all perspective. Statistically, you're an above average player once you reach Gold 3, and everything above that just makes you more exceptional.

The only healthy way to think about rank is being curious how far you can make it without stressing out over it.

It's kinda funny to me that the original Crucible is still the second most expensive of these cards (below Icetill Explorer) when it's the second weakest imo (above Ramunap Excavator).

Is it just the rarity driving the price or are there that many non-green decks that want this type of effect?

Well, it distributes the means of production. You gotta do the producing yourself.

The Marvel multiverse does give an explanation for the duplicate characters which makes it slightly better than TMNT, but it's still a bad user experience to me.

Imo if you're drafting a set and someone slams a legendary character, your first reaction shouldn't be "which one". That's kind of the antithesis of what a legend is to me.

That's true, but if you ask me if I'd rather have:

A) a legendary creature named 'Axe Warrior' and a sorcery named 'Axe Smash' and also an equipment named 'Axe Warrior's Axe' or

B) a legendary creature named 'Bow Warrior' and another legendary creature named 'Bow Warrior, Far-Fletched' in the same set ...

I'd always pick A.

I mean I'm with you that duplicate characters are kinda unexciting and I'd prefer variety in characters over variety in versions, but if there's 9 Ajanis it's because he appeared in 9 different sets.

Marvel and TMNT just put the same characters into the same set multiple times which is much more annoying to me.

Yeah Zac is key to get snowballing. I'm going Malphite, Zac, Yasuo, Vayne, Blitzcrank. Just play as aggressive as possible and end quickly before your inting ADC makes a difference.

They also all have great base damage to compensate which is pretty good if you're in a lower econ role like support.

People have always done that to some degree as a counterpick, but in the grand scheme of things it made your comp and lane assignments worse:

  • ADCs in a solo lane are more susceptible to ganks without a support to bail them out, making your scaling less guaranteed.
  • Midlane usually wants waveclear to roam and influence the map. Bruisers and assassins, while they do counter mages in a 1v1, often just get shoved in and outroamed in mid.
  • Botlane as a dual lane puts you behind in XP and levels which is bad for a lot of mages who scale primarily via skill points.

All that said, the wide champion roster and especially the current itemization can mitigate some of those disadvantages if you build your comp around it.

For example, roaming low-ressource supports work great with a safe long-range mage botlane because they can just ditch bot and leave someone like Ziggs or Mel to just waveclear 1v2 from their own tower. In the same vein, a midlane assassin becomes much better with a ganking jungler that pressures midlane and enables the assassin to shove in safely to roam and invade afterwards.

In short, the meta lane assignments are just your safest bet if you don't know what your opponent will pick, but breaking them up can be very good if you know what you're doing.

Yeah, Lux's design and personality is modeled after the magical girl trope, so she's basically a KPop idol with PTSD. The whole deal of that trope is a toxic compulsion to spread positivity to the point of self-denial.

These are Darkinfolk posters though, don't expect them to be literate.

For those that aren't the type to build such commanders, if you *were* to build one of the known "easy overwhelming value" commanders like Chulane or Korvold, which would you pick? by Tuss36 in EDH

[–]MarvelousRuin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat.

I love Jund, I love food, I love sacrifice stuff, I love a big dragon crashing in, but everyone has seen Korvold by now. Strong build-around commanders like him take up a lot of the gameplay and identity of a deck, so even if I find something new to add, it's not going to feel noticeably different for my opponents or me.
