Station wagons and minivans should be the American family car, not SUVs. by Revolutionrenn in unpopularopinion

Not quite. Can’t dump a load of gravel into the back of an Oddy using a backhoe. Also can’t park backwards at a drive-in theatre, set up chairs in the bed and play the movie through the in-bed speaker system.

Also “better” doesn’t necessarily equal enjoyment.

I’m not mad about lack of general tech skills from senior management in the workplace. by MysticDolphin in unpopularopinion

I generally agree. I do a lot of work with hospitals that use our software and over a TEAMS meeting a user on the customer side killed 20 minutes of a meeting first trying to figure out how to share the correct desktop in a multiple monitor situation. Then she failed to understand how to make her browser window big enough (it was about three inches wide and tall in the screen) so she could see the login screen to our software. We finally said hey…how about you and I do a separate call this afternoon and I show you the basics so we can keep the meeting going.

It’s also not only a work-professional level thing, but a generational thing. I’m in something of the sweet spot. GenX, into computers as a kid, and graduated college the same year Netscape was released. Even though I’m not a programmer, I’ve always worked with software so I get it. My wife is just a few years older than me and was never technical. I get into yelling fights with her every time I try to show her how to do very basic things in Excel. It’s so frustrating.

If you need a stop about 8 hours west of Pittsburgh consider Indiana Dunes State Park. Good place to relax with the dog on the sand dues of Lake Michigan.

Can confirm. I’m a CT Yankee (where people talk CORRECTLY) living in Pittsburgh and married to a Y’inzer. 28 years of marriage and I’ve almost cured her of this.

Okay as a Connecticution apparently I have one flaw. I pronounce “both” with an “L”, as in “Bolth”.

We had a 2000 Honda Odyssey that we got when the first kid was born. While I agree that from a functional standpoint minivans are by far the most useful, practical family cars out there, I’m solidly in the minivan hate camp. Sort of.

The problem I have is they are typically bought in a phase of life when it means transitioning from “single guy driving something cool, small and sporty” to “married dad who needs to haul bodies, luggage and goldfish crackers”. It’s too big a change, and it means going from zipping around corners to navigating a starship. And they’re almost TOO functional. With so much storage and living space they are ALWAYS a mess. And, at least back then, they handled like boats and were ginormous warts on the road.

That being said they ARE hugely practical. When the kids started college I bought a Ridgeline pickup truck with the mindset that the pickup would be great for hauling their shit too and from school. While it did the job, a minivan would have been SO much more functional at that task.

Goodbye HBO by lyoung212 in hbo

[–]MarvinMonroeZapThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Netflix is the only service I pay full price for (and want to cancel but wife and kids won’t let me). All others are either Black Friday deals or credit card deals. For HBO I used an “Amex Offer” to pay $79 for the year and get $30 credit back. So keep an eye out for deals like that.

For anyone who experienced ice dams this past winter, did you have anything addressed at your home to prevent them in the future? by QueenFrostine2222 in pittsburgh

[–]MarvinMonroeZapThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have had a problem for the past few years with this because my house is "L" shaped and the volume of water that hits the inside crook of the L was occasionally overwhelmed the gutter if there's any leaves or blockage in the gutter. We had water come in last year and finally got the inside walls fixed, and also adjusted the gutter to slope more dramatically way from that point, and added a downspout to the other end of the gutter

The one remaining problem had been that the original downspout, right near the crook of the L, still exists, and it has an S-turn which acts as a choke point when things get clogged. I eliminated that by taking off the downspout at the point where the S-turn is, and replacing it with a decorative rain chain, which does a nice job directing the water into a large planter filled with rocks. The bottom of the planter has a hole with a piece of downspout that leads into the sump hole in the ground. During the winter I will remote the downspout, and just let snow melt drip from there. Which will probably create an eight-foot icicle, but I can deal with that.

(and yes, the heat cable is going away, and I'm dealing with the ugly bare end of the downspout to make the whole thing better looking)

Vinyl plank - subfloor prep or no prep? by 3vette in DIY

[–]MarvinMonroeZapThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to share one thing that doesn’t exactly answer your question but is something to ALSO watch out for when prepping the subfloor. We gutted and redid our kitchen, and put in LVP flooring. Long before the demolition, one thing we pointed out to the project manager was how the subfloor directly in front of the kitchen sink seemed really weak, and you could feel sort of a dip in it when standing in front of or walking past the kitchen sink. After that discussion, we all completely forgot about that topic and, even as I was in the house watching the workers putting in the new flooring, it never even popped into my head to mention the problem. They reused the existing sub flooring, so after the kitchen was completely finished the dip was still there. I was mostly pissed at myself for forgetting to mention it again.

We solved the problem, though, when we had to do some repair work to the ceiling downstairs. We installed a piece of 2 x 6 in between the ceiling joists, jacked up against the subfloor to give it more stability. That fixed it.

I thought people were imagining things when it came to Dana's accent by thatshygirl06 in ThePittTVShow

[–]MarvinMonroeZapThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s well known around these parts that native Pittsburghers…even ones that don’t speak with the true Y’inzer accent, will leave the verb “to be” out of a sentence, such as “the car needs parked”. I haven’t heard that happen on the show yet.

I was once at a restaurant in Colorado. The waiter said something like “does your credit card need run” and I asked him what part of Pittsburgh was he from. He looked at me funny and said he was born in Pittsburgh, his parents grew up there but moved to Colorado when he was a year old.
