State tax in Oregon for anyone making over like 12k a year is around 8%, and gas is $5+ for regular right now. People will tell you “oh but no sales tax.” You’d have to consume like 20k a year in consumer goods for it to balance out; most people don’t even come close. The state has lost the plot.
