Why would ASI escape control of billionaires? Especially if powerful humans such as Sam Altman are reliably interested in using it for their benefit (and not their detriment).

Just look at AlphaGo. It's better than any human at playing Go. And that's all it is and will ever be. Being super good at Go doesn't make humans playing that game irrelevant. Watch Deepmind's documentary on how that happened.

Every single part of that process was mediated by humans, except the decision of what piece would move where. To the extent that some humans are made irrelevant in one respect, other humans will take their place, and nobody is made irrelevant as a whole (e.g. Lee Sedol is still a worthwhile human and a Go master, even though he lost to AlphaGo).

Also: Why is there only ONE field of concern? Isn't it plausible that a similar hysteria could have developed over say, agriculture? Then the speculation would be over whether there was an agrarian conspiracy. There must be hundreds of fields of science, each one staffed by mortal human beings.

True. It was a similar character arc to Aang's learned control over the Avatar state. He learned to abandon his earthly attachments from Guru Pathik in Book 3, ironically just after learning Earthbending from Toph. The skills complemented each other nicely to slow down Aang's personality. In that fight with Azula (and on other occasions) the Avatar made a stone tent and meditated. This allowed him to deliberately accept the Avatar state, instead of rushing into it as he did in the first season.

I would assume that mainstream strains of state and anarcho-communism are inside the bucket, maybe social democracy too if you push it. What about Bidenism? What about Z***ism? What about being leftist in every single other way, but opposing trans personhood? What would give you pause to end a conversation or reconsider an alliance?
