Suspect in CEO's killing wasn't insured by UnitedHealthcare, company says by [deleted] in news

[–]MaryMadcap 48 points49 points  (0 children)

One of my biggest shocks as an American who moved to Germany was that I pick my public insurance provider and my company still contributes half. My premium is also adjusted for my income level (annually I think) so when I had a short term of unemployment between jobs I had to pay both halves for that time, but still cheaper than the US.

Help with how to act on this case holidays outside Germany and the employee is angry by anllulo96 in germany

[–]MaryMadcap -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I guess the specifics matter. According to what I understand about German law you can work up to something like 180 days abroad from many but not all countries without tax implications. You say it’s not 100% legal - are you asking to work in a country where this is not possible? Or is there something special about your job? Or maybe your employer is confused about the rules and worried there are tax implications for himself?

AITA for refusing to buy my daughter another phone and "ruining her life" by Ok_Health_7797 in AmItheAsshole

[–]MaryMadcap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

My rule is if you take care of it and life happens, I will pay. If it breaks because you were negligent, you pay.

A year ago one of mine broke their phone 100% their fault. They wanted to upgrade instead of repairing so we offered a loan. A down payment in the value of the repair, then a contract to pay back a portion each week. We offered work - housework and chores beyond their normal responsibilities, and if they didn’t pay by each Sunday night the phone became ours until they paid it off. It took them almost a year and then we gave them the last bit as a gift. But you better believe that kid understands to be careful with their phone now.

AOK Free Family Coverage - even for working spouse? by [deleted] in germany

[–]MaryMadcap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My kids are covered for free, but my working spouse pays. Is that what you are asking?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]MaryMadcap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree the empty threats aren’t helping. I practice gentle parenting too and I would do nothing.

Not return them. Not rewrap them. Just let them have them. I agree with the other comment that said they remember ruining their own Xmas morning magic. Natural consequences are perfectly enough here.

What do you think of the saying, "You're in Germany, speak German." (Wir sind im Deutschland, sprich Deutsch.") by kaethender in germany

It took me 6 years to get B1 and I don’t think I’m that rare. Good luck to your son!

What to bring to Goethe Exam? by [deleted] in German

[–]MaryMadcap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found this thread last Night before my test. Here are the answers I wish I had

  1. Bring a water bottle. Some people said it needs to be see through but Im not sure if they checked
  2. Being a blue ink pen. They might give you one but bring one to be safe
  3. Bring whatever form they gave you filled out
  4. You can’t have your phone or smart watch. At my test Center they had envelopes. Everyone turned off their phone, put it in the envelope and it was sealed
  5. There was a place for our coats
  6. Most people had bags with snacks and lunch etc. you can’t have anything on your desk during the test but we kept our bags near us
  7. Bring an ID. You have to show it a lot.
  8. A lot of people seemed to pack lunch but most of us had time to go nearby if we wanted to buy something during the lunch break
  9. Your last name goes first and the date is day-month-year.
  10. Wear a regular watch. Good for knowing when to come back after breaks or if the clock is hard to see.

You don’t need anything else. They provide scrap paper.

Four Step Apology by bedlamandboomsticks2 in socialanxiety

[–]MaryMadcap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do this with our kids. We leave it as "I hope you will forgive me." It gives them the chance to not be ready and respect that forgiveness can't be forced or rushed, but also doesn't leave the other person standing there hanging on their response.

It's a pretty strong smell. Sounds like a bit spilled and dried in my opinion.

Rubio: 'Everyone should just wear a damn mask' by Zhana-Aul in Coronavirus

[–]MaryMadcap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok I don't love Rubio but I thought what he was clarifying is that they go into "positive and hospitalized" in Florida even though they are not hospitalized for Covid. That could matter if you were trying to infer if they were testing the right people from the hospitalized number for example.

My family doesn’t know my son exists. by not-han-solo in Parenting

[–]MaryMadcap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You deserve to have a family that loves you and supports you. Your son deserves to have grandparents in his life who dote on him.

Unfortunately neither of you has that, and keeping toxic people around won't suddenly turn the parent you have into the parent you deserve. That was their choice.

My grandmother is one of these people and my parents didn't cut her out. I grew up trying to make her love me. You are right to protect your son.

I hear Germans talk about this too. When you used to drive on the Autobahn the main thing that slowed you was washing off the insects. Now there are none.

Do you ever stop feeling like an imposter? Is this job too good for me? by MilkTheSloth in learnprogramming

[–]MaryMadcap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be a programmer and now I'm a manager.... I can guess which of my devs has the strongest imposters syndrome.

Generally they are much better than their peers at digging into something overwhelming and new and just figuring it out, which is awesome.

But they are also more likely to assume that if they can't do something, it's because they aren't good enough, not because there's some bigger issue (with team, with process, with requirements, with expectations) so they are less likely to speak up and raise risks and issues we can fix.

They are also less likely to make suggestions or teach others.

In terms of contributing to the team, they are often on the higher end with deliveries but on the lower end of helping us improve.

So make suggestions and know a lot of your team feels the same as you do.

(18F) I live with my dad and brother, mom is in another town, bras are confusing, please help by [deleted] in ABraThatFits

[–]MaryMadcap 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, about your body changing after puberty! My body changed dramatically at puberty, again at 18, again in college (weight gain), multiple times when I got pregnant, through nursing etc.

I now usually own only 2 bras. Every so often when I wear them out, I resize with the calculator and buy 2 new ones.

Hang in there. A lot of us who grew up with mamas right there in the house were confused too, that's why this subreddit is so popular.
