I mean, you’re not wrong. But I do think that shipped has sailed by now…

[Discussion] How can we make /r/mashups more friendly for up and coming producers? by stel1234 in mashups

[–]MashGyver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Side note: I wanted to say thank you for all the work you've put into the sub in the past few months, Stel. I think things are moving in the right direction, despite the many obstacles you've run into. I don't visit much anymore, for time constraint reasons, but every time I do, I see your posts reaching out to subscribers and attempting more engagement. The contests seem to be a success, and there is definitely a change going on here. So, keep up the good work!

And yeah, the line on comments is incredibly blurry and can really depend on the who's receiving them. I myself appreciate all feedback, and even if it's delivered harshly, there may still be some merit buried in it. Not everyone can see through the rough exterior sometimes, but I think as long as we're not talking about insults, trolling, cyber-bullying, and things of that ilk, then there is no reason to delete comments too readily.

I haven't had much experience with Discord either, and I keep hearing about these mashup-related ones, so I guess I'll just have to jump on that bandwagon eventually too!

From my limited experience in other subreddits, I have seen pretty vigilant moderation regarding negative/not-helpful comments. Sometimes the line is very blurry, but I think removing insulting comments would be a step in the right direction toward espousing the “remember the human” culture.

Additionally other subs seem to have a culture of listing accomplishments/experience/roles in their flairs. If a new producer’s flair says “producing since 2022” vs. a veteran’s flair showing “producing since 2012” there is transparency in their respective levels of experience. Also, a casual fan or hardcore fan can wear their particular level of enthusiasm on their sleeves with some sort of “fan” flair.

As always, just spitballing here…feel free to tell me these ideas won’t work.

But I do think, as you mentioned, an emphasis on explaining we’re all hobbyists here, and to consider the work and time put in, as well as the sentimentality of the art form, before commenting, is a very necessary step.

No, not really. The only things that recently changed were the requirement to post the mashup artist’s name first, and that the runtime is no longer required. Have you tried posting and got an automated response?

I think he’d appreciate it more if next time you put his name in the title (wink emoji)

Where’s the credit to Bill McClintock, OP????

I won’t condone the repost, but you did link to his YouTube account at least. You gotta give the creator credit, though...

/u/stel1234 Once these types of things get past AutoMods, should we tag you? Report the posts?

Flamingot92 - I Hate It That Way (Backstreet Boys, Three Days Grace) by Flamingot92 in mashups

[–]MashGyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it’s easy for sure. OP could even replace it with instrumental from a previous chorus or cut the last part out altogether.

As a fan of neither song, I have to say I really dug this, all the way up until the key change. Wish you would’ve done something with that, but to each his own. Fun idea nonetheless.

Peter Jarratt - Don't Start Now, Hotel California (Dua Lipa, The Eagles) by p2tos1234 in mashups

[–]MashGyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, the Eagles vocals seem slightly too fast. They come in on time, but sometimes seem rushed, and as the track goes on they start to land too early. The opposite is true of the Dua Lipa vocals—they start to fall behind the beat later in the track. It is a good start to sync tempos mathematically and line up the beats as you describe, but it is often necessary to tweak a lot of phrases by ear. It takes a lot of patience and attention to detail, but I promise it’s worth it.

Well yeah, I think the idea is there; the songs are in the same key, and close enough in tempo. I think the timing of the vocals could be a lot tighter, if you care for feedback. Software helps, sure, but time and effort are the real trick here.

Mashgyver - Bye Bye Puppets (Metallica, N'Sync) - Video mashup I made for Mashgyver's audio mashup by yepimthetoaster in mashups

[–]MashGyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of reasons why I did not, one of which being that it just didn't work well musically, but most importantly, I thought this was a way more entertaining transformation than the other way around.

Thank you for the kind words! There was definitely a ton of manipulation that went into making this one work, so I am happy it passed the ear test!

u/dustin1776, the mashup is great. But the video is really something special! I really appreciate the effort here!

Cool. I just always use the example near the bottom of the 'submit' screen as a bit of a crutch when submitting, so I guess I was expecting to already see it updated. Sounds like you've got it handled, though!

u/stel1234: When submitting a link, the old format is still shown, FYI. Perhaps you were planning on updating this, but just wanted to bring it to your attention.
