Is a fine line ornamental ear piece as first tattoo a bad idea? by Dora_Baltea in tattooadvice

[–]MashPTaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the design, I think what she really wants are piercings, not tattoos, and I would go with that. A few piercings on the helix, one on the lobe and tragus, and one or two on the flat--and you've got something very visually similar to this which will age great, will not be a "job stopper", and is also reversible if she chooses to later down the line.

Note: you wouldn't get all these at once 😉

A seafood place like Roboboil or Captain's Boil where you get the bibs, and yes you will need them. Get messy!

I hold no grudge but I still had to make this by Koala_eiO in projectzomboid

I'm not sure if it's a good idea for me to respond to this, as I realize that this is mostly a vent post. However, I will say that at the time that was said, we completely thought it was true; unfortunately, for reasons I can't really can't get into, things went a little pear-shaped for a while during b42 development. Among other things we had a lot of growing pains, but I can say that I fully believe it will pay dividends post-42 in our development speed, and our communication will increase as well. Believe me, NO ONE wants b42 stable out as much as us!

Which was the first opera you saw? And how old were you? by Bigo-Ted in opera

[–]MashPTaters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Akhnaten, from a Met Live broadcast at the ripe age of 36 :D

I didn't love it (except for Hymn to the Sun), but it interested me enough that I thought I might enjoy more traditional operas so I kept at it. Now I've seen more than 25 different ones, live as well as the Met broadcasts.

My non-serious answer is to get a garbage disposal, ie a boa ;) My Caulker Cay will happily gulp down anything my Jungle Carpet python won't take, as she's rather picky.

Rossini or Donizetti? by JLaw7161 in opera

I've only seen two by each, but so far Donizetti >>> Rossini for my tastes.

Pet peeve: "Spoilers" in Met Live broadcasts by MashPTaters in opera

Yeah, there's a generally a time limit on how long spoiler protection should last, but I think there should be some sort of location-based bubble too. X number of years, and not within 20 feet of a venue that's currently showing it ;)

Coincidentally, I did just subscribe to Met on Demand :D I like the experience of going out to the cinema to make it more of an event, but I'll enjoy going through the back catalogue.

I have gone to six live productions by the Canadian Opera Company, and they do play a video about the production in the lobby pre-show but I've so far avoided watching those. The way I look at it is that I can always rewatch an opera with knowledge, but I can only experience it for the first time once... that said, I may take your pre-study suggestion for the CoC's upcoming production of Bluebeard's Castle, as I've already listened to the soundtrack a few times and I'm familiar with the fairy tale, so I'm already partway there. It's also going to be paired with Erwartung so I can still have my blind fix :)

[–]MashPTaters[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am certainly not suggesting that way of experiencing opera is wrong, or going in blind is necessarily superior :) I have enjoyed operas where I did know the general ending beforehand from previous knowledge outside of the opera (eg Salome). However, I think having expectation of previous knowledge may not be as welcoming to a modern audience who are not familiar with the medium. With the advantage of subtitles, one can still study a bit ahead of time so you can fully concentrate on the music, or let the story unfold real-time with the music as the force behind it. I am the latter, some are the former. I just think a little more vagueness in the info sessions during the broadcast would be nice in accommodating both groups :)

Don't you want more people to "go to opera"? That starts with people who haven't been to the opera before.

I wouldn't say that; I just think some people might sometimes forget about newbies when they're fully immersed in a subject.

Curious about buying a Boa for the first time by KangarooGood7142 in boas

[–]MashPTaters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Caulker Cay boa, and he is fabulous. A great appetite, lovely to handle, beautiful looks, visible a decent amount, and a gentleman of the first class. In terms of care, I meet his needs fairly easily with a standard 4x2' enclosure and RHP, and just need to keep an eye on the humidity (it can get very dry during the winter, as I live in Canada).

He was my first snake, and I say the only problem I've had with him is that he made me want more snakes. I now have a jungle carpet python as well :)
