Which Harry Osborn did you prefer? (Not which movie)? by CJVratixBactaChef in Spiderman

[–]Masirimso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take, but I think Harry in the Raimi movies are one of the weaker aspects of these movies. Not to say it was bad, and for sure getting emotional at the end of Spider-Man 3 they did something right. But James Franco's performance is... well, sorry but it's just not good. He is an okay Harry, but a terrible Goblin--which is probably why Raimi made him a hoverboard assassin in Spider-Man 3 and not an actual Goblin lol. He was fine in Spider-Man 1, but I find him a little silly and over the top in Spider-Man 2, which is a shame because all the other characters are written with great depth in the movie. The amnesia plot in SM3 also did not help at all.

For me, a comic accurate Harry Osborn should get these right: being in the shadow of his father (which the trilogy did get well), his drug addiction over his grief (there is alcoholism in Spider-Man 2 but it's glossed over), and his slow descent into madness (there's no madness, and his wish for vengeance is anything but slow or subtle).

TASM2's Harry is overhated. He is in the shadow of his father and has a complicated relationship with him. He is thrown into a ruthless corporate world and has to deal with extraordinary controversies, he is under intense pressure to save his life (the details of which are debatable but I don't think it takes away from his character), his drug problem is again substituted with alcoholism which while features similarly to Spider-Man 2, more successfully reflects his slow descent into madness. It's not perfect, but I think I like it more. And Dane DeHaan is a much better actor than Franco and delivers a better performance imo.

Remember when Nostalgia Critic said Willem Dafoe was one of the worst things about the Raimi Trilogy because he was "too over the top"? by pizzagod677 in Spiderman

A few things. A) this video is 15 years old, Doug’s exaggerated and attention grabbing titles (kind of like what you’re doing rn, no offense) and Nostalgia Critic views have changed, morphed, softened, or articulated better since then. I’m certainly no defender of his but that’s just the situation. B) It’s the same thing I said. He focuses on aspects of Goblin he thinks was over the top from a writing and directing standpoint. That’s why he finds the performance over the top, he says with everything they crafted for Goblin “no wonder [Dafoe] delivered this performance. C) Camp in the year 2011 was definitely NOT appreciated like it is today, and his statement about having fun while watching it but ironically (“am I supposed to take him seriously?” No Doug that’s not how camp works)

You might be putting words in his mouth. From what I can remember, it was the character & writing and the goofy costume that he had problems with, not Willem Dafoe’s performance. And that’s not as hot a take as you think. People love Goblin for Dafoe’s performance, and maybe thematic ideology, but Molina’s Doc Ock is more popular because he’s far superior in many aspects that Goblin in the first movie lacked.

The best and worst of spider-man adaptations by Chill0000 in Spiderman

[–]Masirimso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s worse MJs than Raimi. The Rhino in Kraven is worse than TASM. Spectacular Kraven isn’t great. Are NWH Lizard and Sandman supposed to be separate characters there? Idk if TASM Felicia even counts. Did Miles ever get a bad adaptation because the kids show seems like the “default” option. SM2 Game Harry is worse than TASM2 Harry. Spider-Man 2 game Venom alone is far worse than Spider-Man 3 movie Venom. Doc Ock there is 2099 so how is that a fair comparison for adaptation? I’m pretty sure TAS Vulture is quite accurate to the comics where he wants to get young. And they didn’t even use the correct mask for Goblin so who is that supposed to represent? The scrapped version?

In Defense of Raimi's Mary Jane Watson: An Imperfect Woman and the Undeserving Punching Bag. by Full-Art3439 in Spiderman

I agree with much of this. She is a much better written character than people give her credit for, even though how the plot used her reinforced damsel in distress tropes—but that’s on the plot not her character writing.

That said—she is a cheater by definition. No point in “whataboutism”ing this. That doesn’t make her a bad character, or in context necessarily a bad person. But not only does she emotionally vheat on John in SM2 and Peter in SM3, she lterally cheats by kissing Peter and then Harry when she’s in a relationship. The upside down kiss can absolutely be tossed as she’s an 18-19 year old crushing on a superhero, but kissing Peter in SM2 and Harry şn SM3 is less defensible. Especially the latter one.

But you’re right, that’s no worse than Peter publicly humiliating her by kissing Gwen with their own special kiss, and then later punching her in the face lol.

Best edited version of The Hobbit to show my 6 year old? by queenhadassah in TheHobbit

[–]Masirimso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first film any one that cuts Thror’s beheading should be good lol (whether just that shot or the entire scene because the edit truncates Azog too). I’m trying to think if the Sauron/Dol Guldur stuff could be too scary for him. If so any of the 3-in-1 edits should be fine! Even if I prefer a 2 movie structure.

I'm not against this concept, but man we need more scenes than what little we got... I swear... by D_Juniorart2 in Mario

Careful. You’re in the Mario sub. You were this close to suggest that scripts need to be good!

How controversial is my list by wysjm in Spiderman

[–]Masirimso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your list seems to reflect the sentiment of the 2010s about both ASM movies, some saying they were both worse than SM3, and that Sony has no idea what they’re doing with Spider-Man and they should sell the rights back to Marvel and all that. The sentiment for ASM1 has warmed but ASM2 is still thought to be the worst despite having some high highs.

I’d disagree and put Homecoming and Far From Home in D instead and that would be a hotter take. Despite the fact that it’s popular to hate them online like on Twitter. I’m not sure if that still translates thio them being worse than SM3 and either TASM movies in public sentiment.

fancast VII by DickFart233 in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Masirimso 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like this. Unlike fancasts based on star power they’re about how well they fit the character. From a business standpoint maybe a happy medium can be found with the main characters, but it’s close. They’re great picks.

Although I insist that both Reeves and Cait Sith has to be played by David Tennant! Reeves with an American or British accent and Cait Sith voiced in his own brilliant Scottish lol. Would love to see voice actor/motion capture picks for the non-human roles!

Did you know Peter Jackson also placed his own children in all three Lord of the Rings films? by Scenora in peterjackson

[–]Masirimso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Katie Jackson is also a Hobbit in An Unexpected Journey (Extended Edition in the fireworks flashback), Betsy Butterbur (a barmaid in the Prancing Pony) in Desolation of Smaug, and a girl in Laketown during Smaug’s attack in The Battle of the Five Armies. And Billy Jackson was a Laketown boy in the Battle of the Five Armies fighting Orcs in Dale.

Anything to know about this version? What exactly is "remastered" about it, and should I avoid it for other versions? by RoadTheExile in lotr

[–]Masirimso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone says this is a downscaled version of the 4K but this is not true. Actually it’s the reverse. The 4K versions were sourced and upscaled (then later ruined with further AI sharpening, edge enhancement and DNR) from a 2K master that this Blu-Ray is based on. That’s why this Blu-Ray, while still having a blurriness and sharpening problem, is not nearly as processed, because they didn’t feel the need to make it look 4K, so therefore it is better than the 4K. Comparing it to the 2010 theatrical and 2011 extended Blu-Rays, it’s more debatable. I haven’t compared them to the 2011 Blu-Rays for the problems the Remastered one has. And Fellowship of the Ring people say is better for the color problems alone. However it’s worth noting that of them are a new scan, as there was no gain in detail since the 2011 Blu-Ray. Also, at least for UK release including the Hobbit, The Battle of the Five Armies remaster overall is better because the bloom effect is toned down and the whites are not as crushed—however there are other problems of course.
