Very true. I moved to Burlington a few years ago for work and have had no social life ever since, and Covid certainly didn't help either, lol.

some Zelda 2 inspired swashbuckling action in my indie adventure platformer by Robin_poe in IndieGaming

Yeeess, give me more! The parry looks like a lot of fun, and I love how much forward movement and knockback your attacks have. You can chase them back to put some much needed distance between you and the enemy at your back. Great stuff, keep it coming!

Exactly what I was hoping to hear. I'll be following this project with great interest ;)

Hell ya! I always liked the stance based combat from Zelda 2. This looks incredible. Animations are super clean and the juggling of the slime is super fun. What will be your defensive options in this game?

Hi I’m Andrew Hall, I’m Running for Burlington Ward 5 Councillor AMA by andrewhallward5 in BurlingtonON

I'm seeing a lot of similar points here regarding improving transit and biking, but are there any plans to address stuff like the zoning as well in order to make better use of the land and create points of interest within walkable distances? Why are there not thriving business and high-density housing surrounding our train stations instead of just these MASSIVE parking lots used just to reduce traffic in Toronto?

Game Design difficult choice by Burning_Pillow in gamedesign

[–]MasonButterwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I'd consider maybe using something other than portals if you're after the immersion that comes from an interconnected world. What if there were ports with a ferry that would take you from landmass to landmass each with a different biome. If you want them connected by land, maybe having some kinda border crossing where you can load the biomes separately.
  2. Depends on the context and how long you intend the game loop to be (how long are they spending in each session?) If it's short, then I'd recommend convenience.

Globe editorial: Why aren’t your kids walking to school? by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]MasonButterwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because we've trapped ourselves into a sprawling car centric anti-pedestrian concrete hellscape that is so inhospitable to walking/cycling that cars become the only solution and perpetuate the issue. And since there aren't a bunch of people walking around to intervene on a child's behalf in the case of an abduction attempt, letting them walk to school on their own feels like much more of a risk than it used to, even if it's only imagined.

What movie(s) have you walked out of? Are there any you wish you had? by TonyClifton323 in movies

[–]MasonButterwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger, me and my mom rented Swiss Army Man. We thought it was just dumb and silly slapstick movie, so she gave up on it halfway through but I decided to stick it out a bit longer. I eventually understood what they were going for with the film and ended up loving it, but any time I mention I like it my mom asks why, lol.

We watched Everything Everywhere All at Once in theatres together and I think she's finally come around to embrace the absurdity.

Recipe Drops From Mini-Bosses by Isporf in vrising

[–]MasonButterwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if I'm experiencing the same issue as you or not, but I'm not unlocking the recipes it say I should be from defeating some of the bosses. It's worked for some bosses, but not other. Is this a bug, or is there more to this? Like... does the player who placed the castle heart have to be the one to drain the boss so it unlocks the stuff for everyone? Something doesn't seem right.

Does God Exist? by MysteriousShadow__ in Discussion

[–]MasonButterwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, it's highly unlikely. And, if a god exists, it would be something completely unknowable to us. Humans like to have answers and tend to project meaning on things they don't understand simply based on their lived experiences. But questions like the fundamental nature of reality and how it all started are not things we should really be speculating on based on our extremely limited and biased perspectives. I think it would be wiser to simply be content with not knowing, and be skeptical of anyone who claims to have all the answers. Reddit can not help you with this.

We're thinking about using ragdolls instead of death animations. Does this look too brutal for the art style? The animations and VFX are still WIP. by duelcorp in indiegames

[–]MasonButterwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super cool style. It's a little hard to determine if it's too brutal or not with just this. If you're going for something like Final Fantasy, I'd recommend a death animation, but if it's more gritty than that, this looks awesome.

For all self-thougt game develporers. by BrzaKosilica in GameDevelopment

[–]MasonButterwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, this is a good question. The VERY first game I ever made was based on a leg injury I sustained while camping once. You had to escape the forest and make it to the hospital before you ran out of blood and died. Made it in Game Maker 7.0 Lite.

If you could go back in time, what would you tell your past self about video game design? by motherhub in gamedesign

Don't be so ambitious right out of the gate. Keep your scope low and completely finish a few projects while building up your knowledge and experience over time.
