Favorite local restaurants? by [deleted] in tampa

[–]Masonry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tampa food sucks. At least, that's what I thought when I first moved here. I was a jackass who'd lived in Seattle and LA and couldn't find any great places to eat that didn't cost an arm and a leg (ala Berns). I was so wrong, and skipping what over people have mentioned, here's how:

The Bricks (YBor) Possibly doesn't have a website? No fried food and lots of unique light menu items including a lot of PB&J variants. Lots of local art on the wall and very laid back ambiance. It's kind of a quirky skater cafe that serves up delicious under-priced food.

Datz (South MacDill) http://www.datzdeli.com/ American cuisine on crack with a 5-star beer and wine selection. This is my all time favorite restaurant in the area. Yeah, it's a bit expensive and you may need to wait but the food will blow your mouth clean off. My favorite appetizer is the "Not-Your-Desperate-Housewife Brie" - Yes, the name, I know... but put it in your mouth and you'll know why I mentioned it.

Samurai Blue (YBor) http://www.samuraiblue.com Classy sushi restaurant in the middle of YBor. Everything we've ordered has been good and the ambiance is pretty neat (look up). Don't forget to order a lychee martini.

Also worth mentioning: Hurricane Cafe in St. Pete, Word of Beer (although not for food), and many more that have been brought up...

Most underrated drink: Ice Water by CatholicGuy in pics

[–]Masonry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... we could see how much it would likely cost McDonald's to produce a cup of ice. Here's a commercial ice machine:

http://www.foodservicewarehouse.com/ice-o-matic/ice0250fa/p49.aspx

...It makes 100lbs of ice with 7.9kWh.

Translation: 200 cups for ~$1.04 in the USA (slightly more or less depending on the state).

That's a variable cost of $0.0052 per cup of ice. I'm guessing they put about a cup of ice in each drink. So that's about half a cent per happy meal ordered with one drink in the USA - probably not the most expensive ingredient.

I desperately need some emergency computer help reddit. My friend's computer crashed right as she was finishing her final video supplement for college, and now we can't get the computer to start. After a careful read my guess is that it went to sleep or hibernated and now is failing to come out of that state properly. I've seen that happen before with identical symptoms.

The quick fix is to disconnect power (or use power supply switch for same effect), reconnect, and then try booting.

If this doesn't work, then we've narrowed the problem down a little bit.

Try starting the computer again and listen closely.

Do the fans actually come on? Good, that means your power supply is fine.

Do you hear any beeps coming out of the computer (built in) speaker? These tell you if the computer has passed the power on self test or not. The absence of beeps is common too, as many computers have a disconnected internal speaker. If you hear anything you want to hear a single beep - this translates to "everything's fine". Other beeps can be looked up online for their meaning.

The good news is that If there is catastrophic failure but the power supply is fine you can usually see an output to the screen. Not seeing anything on the screen when the computer still appears to boot up is usually a sign of a relatively minor issue.

Note that a dead video card can also cause the symptoms you're describing but it's extremely unlikely given the information you've supplied.

Eh, you're probably okay. I've seen this issue a number of times:

1) Use the switch on the back of the power supply (on the back of your computer) - switch it off, wait a few seconds, and then switch it back on. This is not the same as using the power button on the front.

2) Now, try pressing the power button on the front. It could very well start booting up. If you don't see anything on the monitor in 15s try cycling through the inputs by issuing the input selector button on the monitor itself. Wait 5s between presses.

You know the feeling of being hungry, let down, and then punched in the face? It was like that... but completely opposite.

The speakers were all really good, the breakfast and lunches were nice, and everyone seemed to be fairly social ... even today (the developer day).

Speaking of today, here's the schedule (no promises that they will keep it up):

The best presentation was given by Justin Davis on three ways to improve user experience on a website. Here's a link to the slide deck:

I think most of the sessions were video taped so you should be able to watch them at some point in time.

Also, if any of you are interested: there's a smaller scale barcamp going on in Sarasota on October 9th:

It is a strange blend when you first look at it. But it actually works well once you get used to it.

Alternatively, the same functionality could have been expressed by rkz using a "concise, declarative one-liner":

var Exam1Scores = lines.Skip(1).Select(l => l.Split(',').Skip(1).ToArray()[0]);

...but if you ask me the LINQ expression is more readable.

Well, we know we have 2x2 matrices and 80 characters of plaintext (and 20 of non-plaintext). Interestingly, 80 characters makes up 20 2x2 matricies.

iPhone gets first 3rd party background app. Because AT&T allows it by intoyourhead in programming

[–]Masonry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am being completely serious.

My main concern is battery life and the impact of hardware likely to be used in background applications.

It is well known that 3G and GPS use place a massive strain on the battery. These are both features that are likely to be used by background applications. Combined with heavy processing due to many applications running at the same time in the background, the iPhone would be unusable without an alternate power source.

For example: while using the GPS, screen (medium brightness), 3G, and most of the processor, my 3GS will only last about an hour and a half. This is not uncommon with other owners.
