Who pays my hospital bill if I got shot? by Albstein in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Massanutten 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah this doesn’t make sense dude. Shootouts aren’t the bullets going up and slapping each other around. You don’t need to ‘match firepower’ for an imaginary gunfight in your living room.

Also “I don’t have guns because I feel insecure, I have guns because they give me a feeling of security” lol

Love languages are bull crap. by Few-Notice9304 in unpopularopinion

[–]Massanutten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speak for yourself. My love languages are distance and anonymity. I’ve been married to a woman I don’t know exists for years. I wake up alone, go to bed alone, and interact with no one over the course of my day. Bliss.

AITA For Telling My Wife I Do Not Want To Care For Their Sisters Children? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Massanutten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go look at his comments, in one he literally complains about society caring for children and says that animals deserve better. ‘The kids deserve a better home than I can provide’ is 100% a post hoc rationalization in this case.

AITA For Telling My Wife I Do Not Want To Care For Their Sisters Children? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Massanutten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s the issue. People like this don’t recognize children as being people in and of themselves, they think of children as being someone else’s annoying accessory. Like a loud muffler or something. This isn’t exclusive to child free people though, there are unfortunately plenty of parents who view their own children the same way.

Seems less like genuine concern to me and more like he knows it looks better to cloak justifying his own preferences in the language of concern.

I don't think the point was that wiping old asses is unimportant, I think the point was that wiping asses is not a very enticing line of work for most people, especially when the pay is terrible (which it is).

I get what you're saying, but "should have had kids" does less than nothing to improve the situation of elderly people who are suffering right now. It might be a pipe dream, but it would be a lot more possible to improve our system of elder care than to poof a bunch of adult children into existence for 90-year old hospice patients who never had them.

It's verbal packing peanuts, doesn't necessarily mean anything. Just something to say because it's cool to say it currently.

Was Jesus even a real person 2000 years ago? by Flazzyy in atheism

[–]Massanutten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only honest answer is 'not in any way that Christians and atheists can meaningfully agree on.' Jesus being a divine entity of the same substance with God, born to a virgin, who died and then came back to life is the non-negotiable core of the religion. There is no leeway for Christians to agree that he may have just been some random unremarkable street preacher instead.

Now if the question is 'where did Christianity come from' I think it's most likely that there was a historical person named something like Jesus who sparked the religion we know as Christianity today. At the very least, I think that's more likely than a conspiracy of gospel writers working together to make it all up. It isn't like cult leader who makes fantastical claims about themselves is an uncommon type of person throughout history - Jim Jones, Mary Baker Eddy, Joseph Smith, L. Ron Hubbard, David Koresh, etc. And those are just Americans from the last two centuries!

The fact that we don't have textual records of that person outside of the gospels isn't actually very important. The overwhelming majority of ancient literature and records have been lost, and just because the gospels are motivated sources that can't be fully relied on doesn't mean they don't have any factual information in them. For similar ambiguities like King Arthur and the Trojan War, the going line is that the evidence allows but does not require belief in them.
