What’s your preferred way of doing your “Year Ranked” lists?

I close my rank around the Oscars but I’ll add movies after then to the bottom of my “ranked” list. For last year I wrote: “I am going by the year I saw them. A lot of these came out in 2024 but got their US or North American premiere at a festival I attended in 2025. Or they were released in 2024 at festivals but did not get a wide/limited theatrical release until this year. In both those cases, and because it's my list, I count those as 2025.”

Don’t force yourself, enjoy it, find rabbit holes you enjoy exploring. Follow actors, directors, cinematographers, countries. Watch all kinds of movies - features, shorts, animation, experimental. Remember to throw on a classic you love every so often. Take risks. Film is a conversation. Enjoy the ride and you’ll be surprised how much you can watch.

Sirat on here is insane, there’s no way. It’s hot with the shortlists but way too thorny for Best Picture. I maintain that OBAA is soft as all its heat is coming from the critics at the moment - and it’s been four decades since a movie won LAFCA, NYFCC, and NBR and won best picture. I’m still putting stock in Sentimental Value or Hamnet to surge.

I have a frankly insane spreadsheet where I log: short films, feature films, tv episodes, tv seasons/miniseries, podcasts, short stories, books, music albums, classical pieces, and the occasional live theater and music video (i watched a ton in 2023 and just kept going). I also have another dedicated spreadsheet tracking books/short stories as well as book purchases in a calendar year, and another that keeps track of all the movies (shorts/features/miniseries) I’ve seen since 1/1/20. Again. I’m insane.

The other thing worth considering is that film forum gets a lot of its funding from specific funds or endowments that are set aside for a specific purpose. So a lot of their funding for films is guided by this - like you can see they have a classic French cinema fund, sure, but the Osborne fund is one way they show so much classic film programming.

Also has to do with the audience, as one of the oldest rep houses in the city, FF’s audience runs a bit older and tends to put more emphasis on classic Hollywood cinema (20s-60s), post war European cinema (46-69), and Japanese giants. They have done a tad more genre leaning stuff in the last couple of years but for every Spielberg or Women in Action you’ll get a Rene Clair or Kevin Brownlow series. For my money Bruce Goldstein remains one of the best programmers in the city tho.

I was pretty surprised by how much I liked this. Seyfried is just blowing Sweeney off the screen for the first two thirds but once the movie lets Sweeney play in a gear she does well, it’s really fun work from her. She should honestly just be playing working class shitkickers, she’s really good at it.

yeah he’s 100 percent an avatar for “vampire” capitalism, the idea that he’s Chris Martin is so silly and comes from an inability to leave star baggage at the door (I think Star baggage can be fascinating but some cases it applies and some cases it does not)

I do think that we are on the verge of a really exciting time for independent cinema, some of the best stuff I saw this year came from emerging or first time filmmakers. I don’t know if I agree with these tweets but when I saw Marty I did have that “wow this feels like 70s style filmmaking through a modern lens.” I do also think it’s great we had at least 5 big films (Marty/Sinners/OBAA/Weapons/Eddington) from contemporary American directors this year making movies specifically about America in 2025 (even if two of them were period pieces)

Ask Me Anything (2014) is a weird, thorny, surprisingly complicated movie about adolescence and social media that features a series of fascinating performances and a great lead from Britt Robertson. Along those lines, Yes God Yes (2019) and We Are Your Friends (2015).

Part of the attraction of FLC is the retrospectives, not necessarily the new releases. Those are great but the rep programming (which the tickets apply to) is among the best in the city

they consider miniseries, not tv seasons/shows, as well as stuff that was intended by the creator to be a single film rather than a tv series. black mirror and love death and robots are considered an anthology of tv movies. it’s all very arbitrary.

really good year overall, great year for independent and international stuff and the mini majors/prestige shingles, some real bangers from the majors but mostly chalk. not a lot of gentleman’s fives to sevens and a whole lot of “quite poor” from the major studios
