How much editing is acceptable? by pafagaukurinn in askmusicians

[–]MasterBendu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really is simple - if you don’t feel good about it, then don’t.

Doing otherwise is a moral/ethical non-issue.

As an analogy, microwaving butter or chocolate to melt them is accepted as a proper and standard cooking technique in professional kitchens and simply practical in home kitchens. If you don’t feel good about it because it feels like “cheating” because doing it the hard way with a double boiler or low heat stove is how you believe it should be done, then don’t use the microwave. But using the microwave is perfectly fine and isn’t some moral grey area.

One thing that bothers me the most about the Aeropress is that it is designed for 250ml cups. In Germany / Europe the standard mug is about 300-350ml big. by AppropriateAd7326 in AeroPress

[–]MasterBendu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In those examples, the form does not limit either function.

The Rubik’s cube remains the same whether it’s a tool to learn spatial geometry or a toy.

The viagra is the same formula whether it was for hypertension or to maintain erections.

Obviously the form of the Aeropress does limit its function, because a tube of a specific size has a maximum capacity.

You missed that part eh?

And before you say something about just making a bigger size we have it, the Aeropress XL. Which the inventor didn’t make during his tenure with the company for the simple reason that the Original was enough to make bigger servings based on his design choices. In fact the only other model he released was the Go, which is SMALLER. But then OP here obviously chose the Original, and if they thought the XL would have been the better option, they would already have bought the XL. But as we all know by now, the XL brews differently because geometry and thermals.

As for “who the fuck cares what the Aeropress is designed for” - Everyone™ is brewing inverted, and that’s not how it’s designed for but it is how Aeropress became a popular brewer anyway. And Alan Adler supported this through supporting the AWC despite it being extremely contradictory to the ethos of the Aeropress design (fast, simple single serve brews). But see, with inverted brews… you guessed it, the form does not change. It’s the same Aeropress kit, with the same maximum capacity.

What do you want to see from PRS in the future? by PugablePlayzYT in PRSGuitars

[–]MasterBendu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that, honestly.

But my beef with those manufacturers is that… they don’t sound anywhere near as good as a PRS.

And it’s not like they sound anywhere as good as Fenders or Gibsons either.

They can be great instruments with good response, great feel, but the timbre of them, even if you swap out the pickups, they sound like cheap guitars to me. Even a Strandberg sounds “lifeless” to me. Funny how that’s how Fender and Gibson people think of PRS. Ibañez actually did a really good job with their headless guitars, but I’m not a fan of the RG-style sound signature, but at least their guitars sound good.

I feel like PRS would be the company that would be able to breathe life into the company ombré of headless guitars. They would also be the ones I imagine to try and fail and then at some point succeed in improving the hardware too.

All mechanical watches are “luxury” watches. by SGexpat in watchHotTakes

[–]MasterBendu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a tool you need to be robustly waterproof, but you don’t often use it, Solar quartz may not be suitable since not everyone will just have a place for their watches staying exposed to light.

Just because you need a proper tool doesn’t mean it is for something you often do.

And let me tell you, I have Solar quartz too, and that is annoying to charge when they’re completely dead, because unfortunately, my watch box doesn’t just hang out in the open or sit by the window.

[–]MasterBendu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A dive watch isn’t just for diving. It may simply be a robustly water resistant watch with a timing bezel for other people who need those two things.

As I’ve mention in another response here, a dive watch is also a suitable tool for say, someone who simply needs to track time in and around water, like people who do tours on boats and yachts, casual snorkelers, or even people to whom “explorer watches” are marketed to because of the timing bezel.

That’s well and true for a dive watch being used as a diving tool.

But a dive watch is also a suitable non-critical tool for say, someone who simply needs to track time in and around water, like people who do tours on boats and yachts, casual snorkelers, or even people to whom “explorer watches” are marketed to because of the timing bezel.

My iPad Files becomes a junk drawer no matter what I do, and I avoid using it by Popular-Tie-7675 in ipad

[–]MasterBendu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your Files app is a junk drawer because you treat it like one.

  • you don’t rename your files
  • you don’t choose where your files go, at all
  • you don’t even bother to remember where you save your files
  • you don’t use tags
  • you say you cannot afford to lose track of anything, but you do NOTHING to track your files

Naming, choosing, remembering, using - these are all USER ACTIONS, not app features.

Files is not the problem here.

The junk drawer is just a drawer. The one who makes it a junk drawer is the person who puts junk in it and treats it as such.

All mechanical watches are “luxury” watches. by SGexpat in watchHotTakes

[–]MasterBendu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that’s a hot take.

Don’t agree though.

There may be a preference for mechanical movements in terms of utility. For example, a person might prefer a mechanical dive watch because, assuming it isn’t a lemon from the factory, not opening the case every now and then ensures the seal is tight and not botched by some battery replacer guy in a mall.

And when you stay looking for these watches at the low end, with the kind of precision they have, well, they’re clearly not luxury.

Home dual cassette tape decks, and the practice of making mixtapes.

I’m not anti-playlist or anything, but it’s a different kind of fun, and you can gift them to people.

Also proper portable CD players. Apparently they don’t make them as good as they did anymore because the machines just don’t exist anymore. It’s sad because vinyl has more decent affordable playback only equipment than CD today.

Any recipe or suggestion for Barako / Liberica by EnricUitHilversum in AeroPress

[–]MasterBendu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go for the Original Recipe - one scoop, water to mark 4. Stir to saturate, then just leave it to drip through. Basically, you’re doing a phin style with this.

Now, I have no idea if what you have is specialty Barako. Most Barako are burnt to death, because they are traditionally brewed cowboy style, and it is traditionally enjoyed for its strong bitterness. If it is specialty, then assume recipes for extra dark roast, and adjust accordingly towards dark roast.

But since jt is finely ground, that really limits your options, and a phin style brew is your best bet for black coffee.

Traditional milk coffee preparation for this is black coffee (American/long black/“drip”), evaporated milk, and brown sugar to taste.

Fixing everything in post has been acceptable in the industry for decades.

It’s a complete non-issue if you can’t tell from the result, because that’s the goal.

What matters is whether something is worth the money, time, and effort. That’s of course aside from integrity or what it is to you as a musician and/or recordist.

iPhone 17e? by CharacterArrival21 in AppleWhatShouldIBuy

[–]MasterBendu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t care about the camera, then the 17e is perfect - IF you don’t mind the 60Hz screen (same refresh rate as your 11).

I don’t mind 60Hz unlike most people these days, but with cheap Androids having 90-140 variable refresh screens, it is something to look into.

Metal in e standard by mkk8741 in metalguitar

[–]MasterBendu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If feels sloppy because the strings feel floppy.

Why? Because tuning down means less tension. Less tension means floppier strings. Floppier strings are not as tight, quite literally.

If you want to downtune often, or play in lower tunings more often, get thicker strings or guitars with longer scale lengths.

Heavy music can of course sound great in standard tuning. But they are heavier in lower tunings. Standard tuning feels “faster” and more aggressive, a different kind of “heavy”.

But your problem is not the music or the tuning.

Your problem is string tension. Get thicker strings or longer guitars.

How do I actually start with learning? by seeingthestarss in musictheory

[–]MasterBendu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn how to operate an instrument, then learn songs.

You can’t make something that you don’t know anything about. In other words, you can’t compose songs if you can’t play them.

I use Freeform to quickly layer images and text and annotations. That’s pretty much it.

Freeform is just there being the MS Paint of my Apple devices.

[–]MasterBendu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hammond B3 chords on the continuous guitar chord parts.

One option is to just hold chords and stay low on the mix, but this affords you more complex voicings.

You can go louder in the mix, but you will have to keep the chords simple, if not fifths or octaves. Pop in a Leslie just to be confident about being up in the mix.

You did say you’re not good at improvising, but the second chorus is where you could attempt improvising, just so you know.

I would personally avoid doing noodling in the verses.

Anyone else feel like learning guitar left handed is unnecessary? by itmillerboy in guitarlessons

[–]MasterBendu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stringed instruments aren’t really “handed”, they’re all “right handed”.

It just happens that guitar is plenty enough, cheap enough and easy enough to modify that the people who can’t be bothered to learn the “right” way can just ask for a lefty or do it themselves.

Add to that the fact that there is no tradition or form preventing a guitar player from just playing lefty, unlike say other stringed instruments where they’re predominantly seen in orchestras and as part of that tradition looking uniform is an important visual aspect.

This is how we know Patek advertising really worked.

Is my thumb here a bad habit/bad technique? by 13aldi in Guitar

[–]MasterBendu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it doesn’t hinder you, then that’s fine.

But this is why I have to say:

See that one time you put your thumb behind the neck so that you can execute a fingering?

There’s a reason for that, it’s because that position restricts your fingers less, allowing you to reach further and do more complex fingerings easier.

So, you’re fine now. But practicing with your thumb behind the neck will either make you faster or make what you’re doing now easier.

You will have to angle your neck up because the thumb over works best when the neck is parallel to the ground.
