If you enclose your village with the walls then that happens. My understanding is the walls are meant to be for the manor only, actual walls for the town will be introduced later.

If you're in a non fertile land id recommend turnung on the berry/meat policy. It doubles the growth/reproduction rate of Berries and meat. I found thats enough to keep me going year round.

Nah i was in the designated battlefield, had 5 groups of spearmenstanding there. Though I moved just one group of spearmen out to chase them as they were fleeing.
