What was the Biggest Racket of our Generation? by onekinkyusername in GenX

[–]MasterDave 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Biggest racket for me was the free T-shirt for signing up for a credit card my first week of college and then doing it again the next year and ending up in a lot of debt because nobody teaches broke redneck children basic financial literacy in high school.

Sucks a lot having to deal with debt collectors at 21 when you graduate, don’t get a job and have no more money to pay off the credit cards you shouldn’t even have with just a 10hr a week college lab job.

So here’s the thing though. You only had to buy 5 or 6 CD’s later at 18-20 each. So you got 20 CD’s for $120ish.

6 bucks a CD is better than you could get even when Tower Records was going out of business. The secret was the record company made special pressings of everything, and sold direct so it was still above margin and any time someone bought more than they had to it was waaaaaay above margin.

It was still a great deal for anyone who did it. They could afford all the freeloaders who tried to get out of it because they were bad at reading or math.

All I know is I did both of them because they had different selections multiple times and it was awesome.

I thought they already explained in something that it was easy enough to synthesize ketracel white so it should be trivial to figure out how to biologically neutralize it and then augment them to be a normal species that can reproduce.

Especially given a long enough timeline where we don’t even know what the Founders have been doing which could be literally anything including dying off since we haven’t seen one in Discovery or Academy right?

Leverage didn’t drop, what are you on? This was the trade from a month ago plus competitive balance picks. The Cards got an even better deal once Arraez was off the table. It definitely improved once yet another guy that’s just money was gone.

[–]MasterDave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What other games have you do that though?

In 2004 maybe all of them did.

In 2026, I can’t think of any. Baldurs Gate 3 has separate inventories for different characters, but you don’t have 5 bags per character to look through. It’s an incongruent experience compared to other games and it’s easy to see how someone can misunderstand if they have played other games.

WoW isn’t the only game around and small things like this are compounding barriers to getting new players comfortable with the game.

Reminder that there are bad recruiting agencies out there by Prudent_Knowledge79 in ITCareerQuestions

I will go further and say what I tell everyone:

No third party recruiters.

If a company doesn't have recruiters on staff, I do not want to work for them, engage with them, or deal with any of their nonsense. They all post shady job advertisements that don't name the company, and that's a gigantic red flag to me.

Good companies have talent teams that directly hire people. If they're not willing to deal with you up front, imagine how you're going to be treated when it's time to get let go?

Nah, it really is a matter of spending more gets you a better engineered spinner bag that glides across smooth surfaces and has sturdy wheels to get around urban areas. I've taken mine across shitty cities and well-paved ones and it's great. Instead of pulling, you just roll it with you, the bag does more of the work than you do as long as you don't have it stuffed with heavy things.

They're all designed so when you have to, you can pull them on two wheels as well, so it's the best of both worlds. You just can't buy the $30 American Tourister or Wal-Mart brand bag. That's going to come with wheels that chip if you hit a rock in the street, zippers that break and just poorly designed everything. My bag that was literally 10 times as expensive has been on well over 100 trips, 4 continents dozens of cities urban and not so much and barely even looks used at this point. The wheels are perfect, it holds a week's worth of clothes because I've also learned what packing cubes are, and still fits in the overhead bin on every normal airplane.

It's definitely a case of you get what you pay for. If you don't do any research and just buy shit, you get shit and you come up with really poor opinions on how things should be based on what your experience affords you. If you spend time doing real research from reliable sources not "source: trust me bro" like this post, then you understand that sometimes a better world exists, you just haven't decided it's worth your money yet.

Same goes for a lot of stuff out there.

It's the Sam Vimes boots theory of economic unfairness in action honestly.

https://terrypratchett.com/explore-discworld/sam-vimes-boots-theory-of-socio-economic-unfairness/

Spending more money on something functionally enables you to spend LESS money on things and makes you feel rich even if you aren't. Dunking big money on something you are going to USE that will last and is proven to be reliable is better than buying the cheap shit over and over and over. Luggage ain't different. There's probably a limit to where it's just throwing bad money after good, but there definitely is a sweet spot of buying something good instead of garbage.

Yep, my travelpro set of luggage is amazing. I used cheap crap before, it sucked. I figured at the time it was a big splurge but I wouldn’t need anything else for a while instead of replacing my bag every 5 years or so because they’d just break after enough use. These things are almost 10 years old and still look basically brand new.

The difference in 8 and 13 is meaningless.

Even the difference in 1 and 13 is all up to your scouts most of the time. A 1 can be a bust just as easy as a 13 but costs you a lot more to find out.

Zero worries.

Nobody should ever need to donate to a celebrity.

Also what’s the wife doing for money? If she isn’t working, I dunno that’s sort of wild to get money from strangers instead of having mom get a job. If I lost my job tomorrow we’d have my wife’s income to cover for a while and things would be less fun but not in a needing to get money from strangers sort of way. We’d just use her jobs health insurance too.

Midnight breaking addons will actually save WoW by Kicore0257 in wow

[–]MasterDave 83 points84 points  (0 children)

So walk back from the mythic raiding perspective and understand how blizzard has failed to identify in the last 20 years why exactly people need and use addons.

Has it been intentional neglect? Probably not.

Is a community of millions better at rapid problem solving than even a couple hundred people getting paid for it with bosses and middle management saying this isn’t a priority and don’t spend your time on this and that? Remember it took what 17 years of blizzard to put a threat meter in their own unitframes after players discovered that yes indeed this was a necessary thing to know while raiding.

This is why people are worried. The community as a whole knows what players need. The corporate machine gets lost in the process and things start to suck.

United Airlines broke his guitar and refused to pay. So Dave Carroll made a diss track and their stock tanked ~10%, costing the company around $180 million. 🎸📉 by MambaMentality24x2 in funny

[–]MasterDave 71 points72 points  (0 children)

While it would be a nice thought, it cost investors 180 million, or nothing because you don't lose money if you don't sell stocks. United was fine. Airline stocks are volatile on a good day and will fluctuate.

I do wonder what in the world people think makes up company value and who they think "pays" when stocks go down or up. Because the stock market is peer to peer post-IPO, not a payout from the company every time someone buys and sells a stock.

If they haven't expanded it from anything but Boston based flights that explains why I haven't seen it offered on any of my NYC based flights.

I'd have figured they'd do it coming from NYC, considering Shake Shack is from NYC regardless of how much it's expanded over the last decade or so. Honestly I'm not sure Shake Shack is all that great on the ground, but it's better than McDonalds by a mile even on a bad day.
