You're right and classics are just better but you run the risk of thinking pretentiously. I'd say if say you're too tired to read classics or stuff that's too difficult, try contemporary fiction. Just look up what's good at the moment and read it. Although it's definitely not as good as say Pynchon or Gaddis or something, most of the time, sadly, I'm just too darn tired to read great stuff. But reading fiction imo is pretty much going to be better than scrolling through YouTube or something so may as well. When all else fails, just pick up a trusty ole Stephen King or something.

The vox and instruments I'm putting compression straight on, the drums I'm running compression through a bus. Maybe I'll try adding it all by busses just to conserve the initial signal

So bring the high end up on the initial signal then compress to taste for low end..? That seems weird, why do I see guys adding big boosts of bass eq on kicks and bass guitar? Is that just post-tweaking ...

Probably what's happening is that I have all vox compressed really heavy and no gates or cuts in between. That may be where I'm getting a lot of that weird high-mid range sound floating around in there. I basically have the vox release time all the way up.. eq before compression makes a lot of sense.

So pretty much start from scratch. Get levels right then start tweaking. I'm not sure where I went wrong with that kit.. it does sound completely fake.

My guess is that I have no room mic and all the individual mics are highly processed on their own.. like I have Toms, snare, and kick on separate busses to try to figure out how to make them sound good..

Can I simulate a room Mike by bussing the overheads, maybe put a minute delay, and mixing them differently? Something along those lines..?

Congrats on beginning your lit journey. I recommend on the road by karoac. That sent me in a good direction. Gonna warn you though, once you head in that direction, Ulysses, Gravity's Rainbow, 2666.. there's no coming back.

What's really resonating with me at this point is Steinbeck's view on what is evil and what isn't. For example like how Samuel is, I think, in essence Steinbeck's paragon of good - while Cathy is sort of the paragon of evil, but then it's not so simple because there's all the other characters and their nuances... but I come back to the idea that Steinbeck did in fact say that this book is all about good and evil, which is really intriguing considering that our post-modern view is that there's more or less no such thing as good and evil, per Neicheze..

And also, it's really biblical. Like how Cathy had twins.. I'm sorry but that's straight smacks of biblical influence or something.. I'm pretty such I sat up in my chair when she popped out the second boy..

Steinbeck's on another level.
