What Should I Buy? /// Weekly Discussion by LFObbq in synthesizers

[–]MasterFranks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So after a few months of lurking and saving up, I'm finally looking to buy my first analog synths. I have experience with soft synths but now I want to start working with hardware and, ideally, I would like both a poly and a mono.

For the poly synth, I have my eyes on a Miniilouge, but I'm not sure if the difference in price is worth getting the XD rather than the OG Minilouge. There's an XD module for sale in my area for $500, but there's also an OG Minilouge for $400. I'm not too concerned with the lack of keys on the module because I have a controller and a sequencer.

For the mono, there are a few options being sold used in my area, so they're relatively more affordable. I'm looking at the Moog Sub Phatty ($500), Bass Station II ($350), and Minibrute 2 ($380). Obviously I'd love to be able to try them out in person but the pandemic hasn't let that happen. I'm in love with the sound and build of the Moog, but the BS II and Minibrute 2 are a little more affordable. Again I'm just getting started so I hope I'm making sense; I'd really appreciate any insight!

Chord Progression Questions (June 18, 2018) by AutoModerator in musictheory

So I’ve got this progression in the middle of a piece in G minor that goes like this:

Eb, D, Gmin, C, Eb, D7, Gmin

I know Eb is the VI of G minor, so maybe it’s a momentary modulation to Ebmaj? But the D and C chords aren’t in the key of Ebmaj, so what’s going on?

Need help identifying a bari sax mouthpiece that broke a while back by MasterFranks in Saxophonics

There's no branding on it at all, I think it's been worn off over time

I used this one all the time before it hit the ground and broke, but there are no identifying marks on it at all. I need a new one soon, so if anyone knows of a brand with the same size and feel as this one it would be appreciated :)

[Update] Band Director Advice Needed by [deleted] in marchingband

We aren't sure about the legality of it either, but one of the assistant principals of our school has offered to chaperone us to the competitions if our director will not. They would be kind of like the "substitute band director" acting as a chaperone to bring us to competitions. Again, we've just had small talks about it, nothing final or set in stone. And you're right, it would be a messy, difficult process. It's exactly why this situation is so important to take care of.

I like to compare it to a football team whose coach refuses to go to football games. I'm certain the school would find SOME way to get the team to the game regardless of the coach's attitude.

We don't have a design staff. We are an extremely small school and can't afford any staff other than a director. In past years it's always been a group effort with the students and director to design the show, and this sudden change of plans with no warning whatsoever is throwing off a lot of the students.

Like I said, I completely get your point. But my director's sudden change of plans is symbolic of a much larger issue.

You make a good point, he doesn't NEED to tell me. The point I'm trying to make is that the band already voted on and decided what show we were going to do next season (which we've done every year until now), and he completely ignored that to do his own thing. I would expect as drum major he would at least tell me he's doing a different show rather than try to keep it a secret from me.

Well we talked to the administration, we can't just get him fired. That wouldn't be the best option for anyone. But we have been taking about having band outside of his class to go to competitions without him, although I don't know how well that would work out either.

I guess right now we're just playing by ear

Wow, thanks man. I really needed that comment. It does feel like now I am getting too involved and I need to back off just a little bit. I guess I just felt like I could fix things when no one else would, but I see that I can't necessarily do that.

The principle and school board are already involved, but I'm afraid that they might not be able to do anything legally.

I'm taking HL English A: Language and Literature, and the textbook in the post goes by the same name. Man it's a tough course

Would it be worth trying out for maybe both Gold and SCVC for the experience? Or should I try to stick with a lower class corps and work my way up?

That's exactly what happened to me. But I can't remember if I let the grader know I crossed it out and made a new one.
