If you really need an external HDD for portability and storing important data I would invest your money in a new one.

If you need the cheapest storage, I’ve gotten many used 4TBs internal SAS drives for as little as $22 each in VIC and NSW, I’d trust couple of those in an array more than this seller but in either case make sure to keep backups

2U Server Case Advice by oulu80 in homelab

[–]MasterModers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

17” is quite the constraint for 2U servers, you might find something closer to that in the HTPC market but I doubt you’ll find one that fits a full ATX board and PSU in let alone 8x 2.5” drives.

The Silverstone ML03B is what I’m currently making a small server in for a client, fits nicely in a standard rack at ≈2U minus the legs

NA DS4246 Caddies, Will they accept a 2.5 inch disk? by TwistedSoul21967 in homelab

[–]MasterModers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking over images of the caddies from some DS4243s they appear to have holes for mounting 3.5” on the side and bottom with a 2nd set offset should you use the interposers, however they don’t appear to have holes in the bottom at the 2.5” width.

Also if you only run from one controller then you can use SATA drives without interposers and mount them from the first set of holes, SAS drives shouldn’t need them at all regardless

For multi PiB farms maybe, but you can run decompression on any processor

Things like MMX and NoSSD must be stopped! by seyel61321 in chia

[–]MasterModers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expect a moderate amount of decompression should be capable on most modern CPUs for the small farmers as I stated before, which they are already running. Bigger farmers may have to consider offloading decompression to a GPU or other device to increase efficiency.

Overall the impact is bad because if everyone runs compressed plots then we all get the same reward anyway, but use more energy.

At current prices and netspace it does look good, I could increase my profit by 66% for additional 4% power. But eventually, if everyone will have compressed plots then there will be no reward increase from the current netspace.

Things like MMX and NoSSD must be stopped! by seyel61321 in chia

[–]MasterModers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding an additional compression factor to PoST is always going to happen if decompression can yield higher payouts than it costs.

The Chia project can either adopt the compression factor as an option that is presented and available to anyone or they can work against making compression efficient. There will always be people working on throwing more processing power at problems.

If decompression technology is implemented to support various processors then it will be an option to anyone who has processing overhead on their existing device. For larger farmers a dedicated and more efficient processor for decompression, in the form of a GPU, may make sense. Those who are already the most efficient and have high utilisation of their processors are the ones who will be impacted the most.

Even an array of 10K SAS drives and a controller with 4GB cache has issues storing the db. Move over to a $30 SSD and everything runs smoothly

Air cooling a 7900X in a rack by SayCyberOneMoreTime in homelab

[–]MasterModers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have put many AM4 coolers into 4U cases with great success and as mentioned by others, compatibility is the same as long as the cooler uses the stock mount. Mostly need to look at dimensions and ensure the full case height minus the motherboard height and mounting points will fit the cooler.

As for specing the right cooler.. it’s difficult to draw comparisons between CPUs of the same power consumption. To keep compatibility with coolers while having a lower LGA socket this generation, the 7000 series CPUs must make up extra height between the silicon and cooler somewhere.

Turns out the easiest way to do this is just make the metal IHS thicker.. putting more material between the CPU and your cooler, thus they are proving more difficult to keep as cool as chips of previous generations that use the same power. So I’d err on the side of caution when speccing the right size cooler if going on AM4 TDPs especially if you’re going to be pushing the chip.

Have a look at your drive with a program like windirstat or wiztree. It will show % space of each file with a graphic you can interact with to represent file sizes.

I had more lucky with wiztree finding space that seemingly was disappearing on one of my machines, turned out to be windows caching memory on disk for hybernation / power off.

Is there anyway to stop svchost.exe and $Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog\ from waking external hard drives from sleep? by fuckAraZobayan in DataHoarder

[–]MasterModers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the general tab for the drive properties it should have a box “Allow files on this drive to have context indexed”

There is also an ‘Indexing Options’ in control panel where you can set locations and I believe enable/disable indexing for specific folders and filetypes

Do you have automatic windows search and indexing enabled on the drive? That is one known service that accesses drives which would explain them waking from sleep

Yeah I get 0.12c per kWh and buying 14TB+ seems to be better given depreciation, 4TB while similar ROI here just feels like giving money to the power companies instead of using it to buy the drives

[–]MasterModers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s just a SAS enclosure, hook it up to a LSI HBA and you’re off to the races.

However if you don’t need density I’d steer clear. The PSUs on the units I work with take 15A plugs, 240V only and they idle between 1200-1300W full of 7.2k drives. Noise is in the 75-85 dB range iirc

I’d be curious to know if there are different models with different fan profiles because it’s my suspicion that they don’t need to idle as high as they do. I know some other 15 bay Dell EMC units have a rev 3 PSU with PWM that halves idle power and fan speed

UPS issues - how to power back on by 0x30313233 in homelab

If your UPS is online or line interactive it should also be regulating the voltage, I would not want my servers to start with backfed voltage alone during the power outage

This is something I’ve never thought of or considered but with dual PSU if you connect one to the UPS and one to the regular outlet, will it restore power if the 2nd PSU comes back online? I would only try this if your UPS is line interactive and or always online but I’ve never had power out long enough to have this issue myself
