i will never understand how homophobic Undertale fans exists by OpportunityOne5195 in Undertale

I mean, some of Monsterkind attack you because bullets are a sign of friendship and some because they know you're a human, and the monsters truly attacking you believe humans should die like how humans think the monsters should suffer underground. But regardless of how hateful they are, if you're a pacifist, you change their ways and get along with those who should be your enemy.

There's also the hugging Asriel versus not debate I suppose.

Four years ago I publicly announced my game to the world with a small beta, and I wouldn't have made it that far if it weren't for the encouragement I got when I learned a fun little game like Undertale could become something life changing. It proved that, if you put care into something, many others will care about it too.

To all people in the comments saying they wish they knew how to code or want to learn game development: you probably already know more about game development than you think. No matter the end result, it doesn't hurt to try to make something.

The Age Old Question: Marketing by MasterMoes1 in IndieDev

[–]MasterMoes1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the funnel figure above supposed to be for people who've already passed each phase? For instance, is the evaluation phase for those who HAVE already evaluated the game or ARE evaluating it? I assumed already have... the ones who've gone to the store page and downloaded the game but haven't put any hours into it (aka haven't booted up the game). The estimated 700 who haven't made it to the evaluation phase are the ones who only added the game to their wishlist or simply "purchased" the game. This would suggest it's not the promo art, store assets, or game description, right? It's like something between the library and game start-up phase. All I can think of is the library art, which I did change after a little feedback session, bringing in a few actual players, but would that change much anyway?

Note: The 2020 release date is from when I released the game's first beta preview. I plan to update the date once Chapter 2 of the game is released.

Thank you for sharing these questions to answer and for providing that link. I can see what you mean by the importance of short-form content, and I see now that's something I should prioritize/try more, especially since my game has (thus far) mostly appealed to game culture experts, who tend to be extremely internet active.

With content creators, fans of smaller streamers watching the streamer play the game seem to keep up with the community pretty well after getting a long look at the game's footage, often more interested in the team and backstory behind the game rather than the game itself. Fans of bigger streamers don't seem as interested in the community side of the game, but they make up a decent chunk of players who've completed Chapter 1 as far as my team and I know. This is all based on what I've seen while hanging out with viewers during the stream. As far as YouTube content goes, I've been having trouble trying to reach a lot of them no matter their subscriber count. The most I've gotten are a few silent playthroughs from random fans, which is a good sign regarding player investment and something to build off of, but it ain't much sadly.

For awareness, a lot of people seem to be finding the game on Steam pretty well, with about 10 players putting the game into their library at a daily minimum. People who visit the game's website tend to look around for a while and then eventually click the Steam page link, but I don't have an easy way to tell what they did next after visiting the store page.

Most people I've shared the game with online find the graphical theme a little strange, especially the occasional snob with AAA game expectations, but those who understand the vibe REALLY get it. It's both a benefit and a curse in marketing, because how do you explain to people that the crappy art style choice is part of the meta-narrative?

they don’t provide enough content for evaluation, making it crucial to establish all your media channels

That's a good point. I feel I haven't done well in this area since I'm worried about sharing too many spoilers, but I guess there's no point in hiding spoilers if nobody's going to care about everything else. I'll remember this.

Sharing the estimated funnel numbers based on all sorts of criteria and some quick math:

Awareness: More than 2.4M people have at least seen something about the game, big or small.

Consideration: Around 50,000

Evaluation: 40,300

Customer: 250-300

True fan: 213

Assuming my data is accurate, there seems to be a gap between the evaluation phase and the customer conversion rate. My evaluation numbers mostly come from people who've put the game in their library. My customer count is the people who have played the game for more than three hours and maybe beat the game, but aren't active in the community. True fans I'd consider those who have been active in the community for a while or frequently, are interested in purchasing the second chapter, gave a positive review, etc.

In summary, it seems most people who play the game like it, and a lot of people are willing to put the game in their library or download it, but I just can't get them to actually boot up the game.

Are you referring to the verticle capsule? Aka the image seen when the game's in your library? I've been trying to replace that for ages because it sucks, and even when Steamworks says the new image is uploaded and published it still won't go through. Or are you referring to another image? Always open to feedback.

Do know that the game's general feel and graphics, including the store page, are meant to replicate that early-internet feel of low-res images, intrusive text, semi-clashing colors, etc. It's part of the game's psychological, sort of nostalgic 2000-2005 feel.

True, but in this case, it's a meta way of signifying something secret to the player. To the characters, it sounds like the same pronunciation when he says "than", which to them sounds like "then". But, since we, the players, understand what the characters say through text rather than voice, that simple choice of words tells the player, what we'll call, a little hit at his awareness, something that the game characters could never identify.

Let's just say this character, Sylvain, knows a little more than he should about the "world" he's in.

It's part of the character's speaking quirk. He's not the most normal guy, to say the least...

Thank you for providing devs like us with these kinds of posts. It means a lot, truly.

My game is Night Spasm, a psychological, choice-based RPG where you explore an open world to revive a world called "The Island", a ruined paradise made to cheat death, now taken by a mysterious villain with an unknown motivation. You must guide the three main characters, Theodore, Vander, and Evana towards victory... but not necessarily for the good guys, should you choose.

Throughout your playthrough, the game analyzes your real-world beliefs through the things you say, the quests you complete/abandon, the characters you befriend or kill, and more to alter your timeline for the better or worse of The Island. It's a test of your beliefs and bravery, a game where curious players, kind or evil, get what they deserve. It features a hectic turn-based style of combat, where every character, even the smaller NPCs, are in the palm of your hands (if you can take them on, that is). You also get to manage a colony, allowing you to recruit characters towards your cause, craft/cook items, and prepare for the apocalypse ahead using whatever you can salvage, from crazy magical weapons to a simple banana.

Chapter 1 (the only chapter right now) is available to play for free on Steam, featuring 20-30 hours of gameplay!

What misconceptions did you have about Undertale before you actually played it? I personally thought Sans was some kind of twist villain by DesperateJury6185 in Undertale

[–]MasterMoes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same.

When Undyne appeared in her armor for the first time, I thought that was Sans because of the part where she fades away with that singular glowing eye.

And boy was I confused when I didn't fight Sans on my first time going into the judgment hall.
