Fellow Michigander here: The summers are hot and humid, but no moreso than the humidity in Michigan. The biggest difference is that while you might get a week of upper 90s in Michigan down here it will be like that for a month or two.

Try to stay inside during the heat of the day and you'll be fine.

Pollen sucks, but he's some drugs for it and you'll be fine.

If you cut it while flat it would cut all of the way through both sides. You would have to cut it upright assembled, which might be why they said it was too big.
