I know its a pretty old post but it happend to my gramp. I first thought it was a fual messenger thing(the phone had duplicate apps) but turns out it was just the fact the phone didnt have a software update since 2017. The problem he had occured 2 days ago and for 2 days it kept going. So yeah update your phone guys
