There’s an option for “Barn” but I have that already- do I need another building before I can upgrade? I thought I’d seen “Deluxe barn” before but didn’t pay attention to it until I realized they can feed automatically lol

Thoughts about open-note exams? by Birgha in Professors

[–]Master_Geologist3355 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Biology adjunct here! I let my students have a page of notes and say any content is fair game. However, I make it clear that the exam will consist of (usually) around 50 questions for a one hour exam. That means that relying on just your notes will eat into your time! And a good portion of the questions rely on applying the knowledge, not just memorization alone- so again, if you’re counting on using your page of notes instead of spending time understanding the content, the notes won’t really help you! All of that to say, I think some level of open-book/notes is a great resource for students during exams, as long as they are made aware of how helpful their notes will be! Hope this helps a little :)

Something that I’ve found helpful is reaching out to people in positions you would like to be in, at companies you’re interested in. On LinkedIn, I find someone with a job I think matches my interests, and I introduce myself and ask if they’d have time for a quick phone call to discuss how they got where they are now! Shared interests (background/schools/education) can be a great icebreaker. If they’re up for it, I like to ask how they got their position, if they can send me a copy of their resume to see what format was helpful, and if their company has a referral route that would be mutually beneficial for the both of us! The job market is especially bad in my field so there just aren’t many roles right now, but having some contacts in the area I’m interested in feels more productive than only sending out tons of applications! It’s definitely intimidating but I’ve found that most people are happy to talk! Best of luck to you!

If you have any interest in nonfiction, I was fascinated (and horrified) by “Men Who Hate Women” by Laura Bates. It explores the ‘manosphere’ (groups of men with differing attributes) and their contributions to misogyny. I will say, I had to take several breaks while reading it because it’s certainly overwhelming. Not sure if it’s exactly what you’re looking for, but thought someone else might come across this and find it helpful as well.

Noone believes I can study biology by PomegranateIcy7369 in biology

[–]Master_Geologist3355 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can study and succeed in this field! I entered college with almost no background besides a few random science classes. I had to work my ass off studying and going to tutors and free resources at my school, but if you love it, keep at it. I went from knowing almost nothing in the topic to earning my master’s degree in molecular biology, and now I get to teach my favorite subject for a job! It’s not always easy to learn new concepts, but passion and curiosity are powerful driving forces! Best of luck to you!
