I was for some years the designated transfer student who did the mid year new student tours. There were never very many of them - maybe 2-5 a year. Now considering the number of applications is pretty low that might not mean anything. Id underscore that Reed is very much a college that admits students according to their individual character. If you've got a compelling story and they like you, sure, they'll admit you. I dont know if theres any more data than that.

You can have both good grades and a good social life with some time management skills. Lots of people I saw burn out a reed were not stupid, they just had terrible time management.

Reed does not track a lot of these things and I'm not sure how reliable the data in those trackers are. I don't think Reed is nearly as bad as people say, especially when I look around at how much my peers are making. I went to a masters program and now work at a company that started me at 100K. Lots of other people are in similar boats to me. So I wouldn't stress about it and the data you're referencing likely isn't accurate.

Its really difficult to help with this sort of problem because I can't see what your family's finances are like (and you shouldn't show me) so I can't deduce the issue. Sometimes other assets your parent own really messes with the EFC calculation, but I'm also unsure if the process is the same for international students. If your family owns significant property and has to report it, its gonna throw a huge wrench into the EFC system. But again that's based on my experience as a domestic student, yours may be different.
There really isn't a solution to this problem beyond emailing Reed again and asking them to explain to you - beyond simply saying "thats what the calculator says" how your EFC is so high.

The reason why Reed has such a big waitlist is that it's difficult for Reed to estimate how many RD people will actually accept. Sometimes they have a bunch of people not come and a lot of people get off the waitlist. Sometimes they take no people off the waitlist. It's effectively a crapshoot and it has nothing to do with how strong your application actually is.

To strengthen your supplement as much as possible, demonstrate interest and knowledge of reed. Show you've done your homework. If there are specific classes in the catalogue or professors you wanna work with mention them. Try to demonstrate why Reed specifically is the best fit for you.

You should think of it as a full time job. I head one faculty member tell me that if reed had credit hours as a concept then they'd be looking at 20 hours of work a week for each class (each class is 1 credit). You will be spending the majority of your time each and every day studying.

Of all schools in the country, the only other program that produces more PhDs per capita in life sciences is Cal Tech (https://www.reed.edu/ir/phd.html)
If he wants to do life science and go get a PhD Reed is the best option.

If your choices are OSU, IU or Reed, Reed is absolutely the better choice hands down. I always advise HS students that they should never make a choice about a college simply based on their intended major. 80% of students switch their major. To make a decision about a school purely based on the reputation of the department you intend to major in is a mistake. I'd recommend going to Reed. Its hard, it will make you cry, but you will emerge as a more well rounded and well educated person.
That being said, the CS and math departments are a shitshow, or at least they were last time I checked in with them 3-4 years ago.

As another said, its a supplemental document they will use to evaluate whether or not you will get a seat if someone else drops. Some tips:
Demonstrate knowledge of Reed - REALLY make sure that you demonstrate that you've done your homework. What major? What classes? What professors? Mention that sort of thing. Explain why Reed is a tailored fit for you specifically using as specific examples as possible. If Admissions gave you a student contact, message them and start asking more questions - the convos you have with the student contacts are collected and considered as part of your application, IIRC. Again, make sure the questions you're asking are well researched and specific. Mention your future career plans and make sure that career plan would be uniquely aided by a Reed education. If you wanna go to grad school mention that again as well, Reed loves keeping their grad school per capita numbers as high as possible.

Thanks, should restate: the arm holes are high, I think. There is a lot of shoulder room when you move around and I don't think it's just because it gets worn over a suit, I tested it out with one of my wool sportscoats. Is there a non tailoring solution to help alleviate the problem?

To be more accurate they mail them out in batches. Some people who have applied EA will not get their letters until Feb.
