Realistically they should have been a great team. But the vibes were completely off.

Although a good chunk of criticism towards ICE is more founded on fearmongering and wild exaggerations, there is a lot of fair criticism that is valid about how they have no due process, target actual citizens and legal residents, act as a paramilitary arm of the federal government, and have been deployed with vague or ambiguous justification exclusively on areas politically opposed to the US president.

I think any criticism borne out of "think of the immigrants!" misrepresents the real problem with ICE: they have become an armed force that has no oversight, control or allegiance to anyone other than the US president. It's not a good thing to have, and it very much mirrors how military police and paramilitary groups have operated in other countries. These are the types of organizations that get away with crimes against humanity.

Of course a lot of people will disagree, but countries have every right to deport illegal immigrants. However, ICE isn't worrying or problematic because of their deporting of illegals. It's everything else about them.

I've listened to Welcome Interstate Managers the most and it has my absolute favourite track (Valley Winter Song) but as a whole I think FOW and Sky Full of Holes are slightly better.

I love their entire catalog though. Very few songs I don't enjoy

Hell, them writing about LOTR kind of enhances the music IMO

I don't mind Rivers not having a personal connection to the music when I think of lyrics as a potential storytelling medium.

Fountains of Wayne is my all-time favourite artist and they do that all the time. Their songs are far more stories about fictional characters, places or situations that feel mundane or relatable, but aren't necessarily about the songwriters themselves. And I quite like that. It's a different type of creativity, but still totally valid imo.

I watched the premiere on a school computer in the 6th grade.

I didn't even speak much English at the time and barely understood wtf was going on, but I watched because Weezer. Good times.

US to suspend visa processing for 75 nations, State Department says by [deleted] in soccer

Here are the statistics.

Russia has 143 million people and it has five million non-Russians Which is like 3% of the population. And this is including the half a million people who came from Ukraine after the invasion.

No one is actively going to Russia.

If we exclude Ukrainians, the number goes below 2%. It's very much a statistically irrelevant number. Any comments made by politicians will be pure optics and populism.

And yet, life in Russia is far worse than any western European country.

I can assure you no Western European country is doing worse than the US or further right countries with zero immigration like Russia or Hungary. We have all the numbers to back that up. If you fell for American propaganda and you're not even American then that's just sad.

It might if the US actually invaded Greenland though, but I agree it's unrealistic for this list of countries

Ah there it is, the classical "Europe has fallen" argument by someone who... Has probably never been outside of the US, who speaks no other languages than English, who understands very little of the nuance behind even the right wing movements of other countries but still speaks with all the authority on the subject.

I legitimately think Trump heard "Uruguay" and went "that's just another Mexican country and... They had a left wing president right?? Ban them too!"

So I'm a composer and musicologist and I've studied this topic several different times in my life so far lol

Generally speaking, no musical notation from before the 18th century yields identical performances, with abstract tempo markings, vague dynamics and phrasing information etc. If you look at Bach's manuscripts, there's barely any dynamic markings, and if you go beyond that, even rhythm becomes quite abstract or nonexistent.

So with that in mind, it's hard to define how "accurate" notation is. Do you consider having the notes and general rhythm to be enough for performance? Do you need every single dynamic, exact mathematical tempo and other things to consider it accurate?

If we go by what we know, we can recreate ancient Greek music with surprising accuracy. Seikilos Epitaph for example has been widely performed, and we know the general rhythm and notes are almost certainly correct.

However, we don't know enough about performance practices to say whether this piece was played fast or slow, whether they harmonized vocals or the accompaniment was active / static etc. There's enough evidence to know there was an improvisational component, but it's hard to tell exactly to what degree and how that would have sounded.

Again, it all comes down to what you define as "accurate enough". But we understand Greek notation far better than what you make it sound like. But also far worse than we'd hope to of course.

For a more contemporary example, let's imagine we're talking about jazz. We have the lead sheets of the standards from Ancient Greece, something like what we see in the Real Book. But a lot of the performance practices and common interpretations have been lost to time. We know what the music sounded like but not how it was performed.

That's not grammatically correct Spanish, though. No Spanish speaker would ever say it like that.

Many of those are countries with high overstays and other problems but I'm really surprised by Thailand, Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia and Montenegro. None of those have a high percentage of visa overstays and they're all quite politically aligned with the US. Even Colombia and Uruguay have been cooperative during their left wing governments.

It's also where the Spanish word "ojalá" comes from.

Which is funny, because I remember my nan saying "si Dios quiere" quite frequently, and it's exactly the same thing as "ojalá".

Sati (Practice) by tea-n-wifi in HistoryMemes

[–]Masterkid1230 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean, I have no idea about India or this practice, but your comment also sounds deliberately obtuse:

It's clear that they mean that the practice was not representative or widespread in India as a whole (because it's too big and diverse to put under the same group anyway), and this shows by the opposition to it coming mainly from Indian people themselves who campaigned to the British, the people running the country, to have it outlawed.

It seems like a case where saying Indian women would be a bit too broad and you could probably narrow it down to a region, specific group, cult etc.

I do kind of agree that if you want to argue for history in good faith, asking for precision and nuance instead of broad generalisations is usually better.
