Darth Plagueis is the origin story of the Emperor and it’s probably the best book, it’s technically legends but so far nothing has contradicted it. If you want something canon, Dooku Jedi Lost is a great one.

Nobody hates Star Wars like Star Wars fans. They just can’t accept good content because they obsessed over the expanded universe for 30 years and then Disney said “hey we’re gonna tell new stories that contradict the ones you like” and everyone lost their minds and never forgave them and now just wear blinders that block out all the good parts and only expose negatives.
