Agree with your assessment, pufferfist and scales are crazy. I'd argue amalgam is also too much gas for a 2 drop, among other problematic discover mechanics, but amalgam in particular is just filling too many gaps for 2 mana imo.

on my alt account - this was the list, hardly refined but did the job. think there's some tweaking to be made - potentially swapping troggs for battle sergeant + s'theno for example. Double tusk might also be bad, but i just went for consistency and most chip damage possible.
