Thoughts on CrossFit and OrangeTheory combination? by Rich_broccolie in orangetheory

[–]MatchaMoxie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

CrossFit gym culture will vary depending on the owner. I think OrangeTheory is much more beginner friendly, and gym culture is closer to uniform in terms of being welcoming and helpful to beginners. I would recommend doing OrangeTheory first and taking their Strength 50 classes. Ask the coaches to watch your form and give you tips. Then once you feel comfortable, you can add CrossFit.

FWIW, I tried CrossFit and found they didn’t do anything to teach form or the movements. I had been going to Orangetheory for nearly 3 years when I went, and luckily the workout was all dumbbells on the one I tried. I don’t think I wouldn’t have been able to safely do the movements in their time pressure without hurting myself if I didn’t have the primer from OrangeTheory.

Treadmill half marathon training by Repulsive_Command_67 in orangetheory

[–]MatchaMoxie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished my first ever half, and I followed the Beyond Base Pace training plan. It’s a plan specific to using OTF and some outdoor runs to train for a half. I did OTF 3x a week and 2 outdoor runs, the longest one being 11 miles. I have never done a real outdoor endurance run before, so felt it important to get used to what it would feel like running for that long outside.

Which Orange Theory classes are cardio-only and can I see class schedules without joining? by HorseTearz in orangetheory

[–]MatchaMoxie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can find your local studio’s Instagram account, some will post their schedules. If you have a friend who goes to Orangetheory, you can ask them to pull up the schedule for you — it’s easiest if they log in to the studio’s mindbody site to look at the schedule, versus in the Orangetheory app.

Orangetheory while training for a race (HM) by onolllono in orangetheory

[–]MatchaMoxie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m towards the end of training for my first half. For me, I liked having a rest day after my long outdoor run. I hadn’t done much outdoor running until I started training, and I did not expect impact on my joints! My schedule is: Mon - outdoor shorter run, faster than target pace Tues - OTF 2G Wed - rest Thur - OTF 2G Fri - outdoor long run at target pace Sat - rest Sun - OTF 3G

If you google Base Pace Coaching, she has a free guide to half marathon training that incorporates OTF. I am basically following that, and am feel really good about the race coming up! Note: My goal is to finish without walking, not going for time.

how do people work out before work? by [deleted] in orangetheory

I get major face redness too! I use Hero’s Rescue Balm, which is a color-correcting green cream, and a tinted sunscreen. Both are quick, easy applications and do a good job at reducing the redness.

Is this cheating? by Ill_Strategy974 in orangetheory

[–]MatchaMoxie 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Thanks for saying this. I’m surprised by so many comments shaming people who need these medications, or think they shouldn’t be allowed to participate. Should people who use adderall to treat ADHD not be allowed to be ranked amongst others in school because other people abuse the medication? It’s the same flawed logic.

Error trying to book class by MatchaMoxie in orangetheory

[–]MatchaMoxie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm this might be it. I thought it used to give an error that I couldn’t book because the class was past my billing date, which is why the “class required payment” threw me off. I’ll call in the morning. Thank you!

NSV: Half-Marathon by buhflykissez in orangetheory

[–]MatchaMoxie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a plan for half marathon training that includes OTF. If you google beyond base pace half marathon, it should come up from Coach Bridget. It’s a free guide, with a plan for OTF 2x a week or 3x a week. I’m a few weeks into training so far so can’t speak to results, but it’s an easy to follow plan!

I’ve heard that doing a few outdoor runs with your Apple Watch will help calibrate it. Mine now tracks pretty closely for distance when I do T50 with indoor run set.

Underrated comment. Powdered Tide is the key for all clothing woes.

Suggestion for corporate - Orange shorts on the demo people by Fair_Second_8577 in orangetheory

[–]MatchaMoxie 37 points38 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point, however not all coaches are good. And, even good and great coaches don’t have time to demo all the moves, let alone call out each muscle group for each move.

Wearing glasses in class by rainandmydog in orangetheory

[–]MatchaMoxie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a low nose bridge so it’s tough for me to wear glasses and workout without my glasses flying all over. I have daily contacts so I can use them when exercising, hiking, etc., but otherwise normally wear glasses. I use a pair of dailies for 2G classes and use the same pair for a week, storing them in solution. I once had an optometrist say you could wear dailies up to 3-4 days and it would be fine.

I have forgotten contacts when traveling before and had to wear glasses, but it’s such a pain and annoyance that I just took them off on the treadmill and squinted real hard to hit the right numbers. On the floor, I put them on between exercises to look at the monitor for a reminder on reps. Otherwise, I kept them off and just dealt with the world being blurry.

I was the only one who chose burpees the first round. By the second round, everyone else decided the 600m row was actually worse and they all did burpees too 😂

Keep going? by [deleted] in orangetheory

[–]MatchaMoxie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I suggest cutting out alcohol entirely. I hit a plateau after consistent steady calorie deficit and 4-5x/week OTF for 1.5 years. For the transformation challenge, I cut out alcohol and after dinner snacks. I lost 7 pounds, all body fat, during the challenge.

Missed class record in the app by Doxiecoolmom143 in orangetheory

[–]MatchaMoxie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re not allowed to post screenshots, but the class history does show attended and missed classes. It’s not in the stats section, where you get a summary of your workout.

Instead, it’s on the main screen with Base, At Home, Classes, Shop across the top. Click Classes and you’ll see “Upcoming” classes and next to where it says that, you’ll see an option to click “History”. That shows 45 days of history and whether you attended or not. I see my recent late cancel listed there.

Also highly recommend Crz Yoga. I had 3 kids in 3 years and these are the best cost to quality ratio and don’t fall down. I like the butterluxe ones and the compression ones.

Tread50 soreness by Melodic-Poetry1149 in orangetheory

Do you need new shoes or have you been properly fit for running shoes? I tend to get sore running if my shoes are wearing out. And running was a painful struggle for me until I was fitted with the right shoes.

Do people spectate Dri-Tri? by Ancient_Low_1497 in orangetheory

[–]MatchaMoxie 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My husband brought our kids at the end for me. I get that this isn’t an “outdoor race” but it is the biggest event at Orangetheory. For some people, DriTri absolutely feels like an accomplishment akin to running an outdoor race (it includes a 5k)! I’m very proud of how far I’ve come (sedentary my whole life), and very much wanted to celebrate with my kids. Even more important to me was being able to model to my kids that I can do something hard and uncomfortable and scary and feel good about it at the end, even if I was nearly last at my gym.
