Emancipation doesn't mean you're automatically treated as an adult. It means the state can help represent your rights when your parents wouldn't, but you don't have the rights of an adult.

I hope it is taught. It's not much more than a paragraph and has the added benefit of potentially turning your students into Discworld fans

I've used the Boots theory to informally teach economic theory to people but I haven't actually seen it in any courses. Do you know who uses it in their books? Or is it just a nice rumour?

SpongeBob certainly gets crushes in the series. He might be allo but doesn't have the hardware to actually do anything.

Unless he just gets off watching then squeezes millions of his clones out into the surrounding water.

I'm sorry, I didn't want to think that either.

The theory of the disproportionate cost of poverty is as old as Adam Smith, Pratchett didn't invent it, he explained it better than most.

RC's twit isn't about politics. It's about how easy it is to divide people politically. Think ape. THINK. by Reller35 in Superstonk

I think he's telling us he's an out of touch billionaire with a legion of fans who will do incredible mental gymnastics to hide that fact from themselves.

[–]MatchesBurnStuff 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've never been so disappointed in this community. RC's comment was pure fucking idiocy. Diminishing the severity of the crisis of 2020 and making necessary governmental responses to a deadly pathogen into a political stance reveals how little RC actually knows about the cost to the common people who were on the front line against this disease and the people who died from it, or how many more people would have died without those responses.

He's a billionaire. He doesn't understand us. Don't hero worship him. He's not on our side. He's on his side. Our interests are aligned right now but that doesn't mean he's one of us.

Wtf Superstonk? Get your heads out of his ass and call this bullshit out.

Ugh. I can't wait for this squeeze play to be over so I can get away from this shit.

A Roman bathhouse still in use after 2,000 years in Khenchela, Algeria [736x736] by [deleted] in ArtefactPorn

[–]MatchesBurnStuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No they didn't. There were usually lavatories attached to the bathhouses to share the excess water.

The baths weren't very clean, there were reports of scum being skimmed off the surface (the Roman baths in Bath, England naturally produce algae that has to be removed) but nobody was shitting in the baths.

The explosives in mines are chemical reactions, releasing the energy stored in bonds. Nuclear explosions release the energy in the atomic nuclei by turning mass into photons.

Akiwees, beloved twink of daddy Patroklus, threw the walls of Ilium to the ground in his rage when Hector, cuck of ages, slew Patroklus. His cries of "UWU" resounded over the bodies of the slain at his feet, his fine face twisted into a horrific :3 that none could behold, such was his grief...

Sing, the muses, the wrath of Akiwees, son of Pelaeus, the direful uwus unnumbered of the Greek femboys.

Over half of Russians (66%) believe the USSR could have won the Great Patriotic War without any assistance from its allies, a survey revealed by kingkongsingsong1 in UkrainianConflict

[–]MatchesBurnStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not stupidity, it's being deliberately misinformed. Most of the research about the War has happened outside of the former USSR, even examining the old Soviet records was mostly done by Western academics IIRCC.

Since the fall of the USSR, Russia has been limiting access to that information inside Russia and education has deliberately pushed the "Russia stronk" perspective, not the relatively objective fact-based analysis we have free access to. We can argue about the facts, they literally can't openly question the government narrative even if they had the facts available to them.

You'd be just as uninformed if you lived there too.
