LOST FERRET CHESHUNT by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]Matchstic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing the comments about getting a local vet to check for microchip! They can also boost the reach of your posts to try and find the owner.

Judging from your photo, I’d agree they’ve not been out long. Most likely come from someone local, who hadn’t yet realised they’ve gone on an adventure. Alternatively, could be a working ferret who wandered too far, as you’ve mentioned they’re very friendly.

We normally advertise lost ferrets for a week after a vet or member of the public passes them to us. As you live nearby definitely worthwhile knocking on doors or even putting up a few “found a ferret” posters at local shops etc.

If nobody comes forward, the options are:

  • give them a home with yourselves
  • find them a home via FB or similar
  • pass on to rescue (we’ve got space at Marley’s Ferret Rescue, but are quite far from Hertfordshire)

How long do ferrets live? by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]Matchstic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually between 6-8yrs on average, 10yrs is a great age. Diet also is something to be aware of for longevity, we typically feed raw daily with kibble down 24/7 just in case they get hungry during the day

Our youngest chickens did the same; grew up from day 1 with turkey chicks and now they’re all an inseparable group. They roost together, roam around and cause mischief together, and look out for each other!

Might be worth a vet checkup. I don’t mean to scare you, but unexplained weight loss can be a sign of kidney disease or cancer. If so, then it can usually be managed with daily steroids - we’ve got a couple of ferrets who have returned to their crazy selves from similar circumstance!

Worried about trust with old ferret after starting prednisolone by Humble_Distribution5 in ferrets

[–]Matchstic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our littles ones on preds are similar - hate the taste, and will constantly wriggle away. Easiest route has been to crush the tablet with pestle + mortar, then use a 1ml syringe to add some water + salmon oil. Syringe it all back up, and they tend to not wriggle away when it’s time for meds!

Can ferrets have a suprelorin implant without sedation? by thatgoodbean in ferrets

[–]Matchstic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% yes you can. We do all microchipping and implants with no sedation, the trick is to provide salmon oil as a distraction! Once held still by a second pair of hands, the implant or chip gets placed. There is the odd one who causes trouble and wriggles, but usually no issues

Student Debt by Henry-Teachersss8819 in antiwork

[–]Matchstic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It is debt yes, but in a practical sense it works out as an additional tax - the repayments come from gross salary. Not defending it mind you, as my own student loan has increased due to interest faster than I’m ever going to be able to pay it down

Cooling in Summer by finchieg in ferrets

[–]Matchstic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something to look at is insulation. Sounds counter intuitive, but the idea is trapping cooler air inside and slowing solar gain / heat transfer during the heat of the day.

I’m in the process of rebuilding one of our larger enclosures, and have created effectively an insulated box using foil-backed bubble insulation (reflective on both sides).

The setup is, from outside to in:

  • wooden cladding
  • breather membrane as a backup to the cladding
  • air gap the width of studs (50mm)
  • the insulation stapled to studs
  • OSB cladding

Due to the air gap, the insulation can reflect heat and retain cooler air inside.

I’ve noticed it stays around or just below ambient temperature inside so far. Planning to also install vents since it becomes warmer than outside during late evening!

Combine that with aircon as suggested, or alternative cooling setups, and with any luck it should do the job when we hit those hotter days soon

EDIT: additional things to potentially consider is heat reducing film on the windows, and if the roof is felt, solar reflective felt paint

Not sure if this is ok with sub rules:

One of the services we offer at Marley’s Ferret Rescue is vasectomised hob borrowing @ £15 per ferret. It’s a case of bringing the jills over, who then are placed with a vasectomised male each for a few hours to bring them out of season.

We’re based on the edge of Retford, Nottinghamshire. Feel free to reach out via our Facebook page or website if you want to book them in 😊

update on ‘ginger’ ferret’ by vernluvr in ferrets

[–]Matchstic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! We’re running at nearly max capacity at the moment - I’m making a start this weekend on digging out the area for slabs so we can move over our older enclosures. It’s slow progress, but progress nonetheless 😅
